temperance Petitions were presented by the Womens Christian Temperance Union members and friends of the Newmarket Church of the Nazarcne citizens of New market of whom arc members of Trinity United church Free Me thodist congregation Bogarttown Womens Institute Pine Orchard Union Church Religious Society of Friends Quakers of Newmar ket Pine Orchard Womens In stitute and York County Temper ance Union Those who spoke to council pro testing the action of council to call for a plebiscite on the liquor question were Miss Leonora Starr Rev Albert Mrs Richard Beckett Mrs Starr of Mr Cody Mrs T M Kcffer and Mr Harry West The reeve spoke on behalf of the Nazarenc petition Typical of the protests present ed to council is this petition from the Pine Orchard Union Church Mr Mayor and Members of Coun cil First let me thank you for your willingness to hear a deputation from a municipality outside your own town But we are not exactly outsiders This is our town where the people of Pine Orchard come I to do their shopping and to buy practically everything they need We are a deputation from Pine Orchard Union Church As a church as a community we arc opposed to the opening of any outlets for liquor as beverage in the town of Newmarket We take this stand on the following grounds As a church we appeal to you as might expected on the grounds of morality character building law enforcement Those are the traditional grounds on which you expect any church to base their arguments But farmers are also good busi ness men nowndays or they arc not farmers for very long We base our argument on solid busi ness principles 1 Fifty families or so from our community spend 38000 here in a year in groceries alone Add at least an equal amount for other items That is not to be disregard ed nor are the people to he ig nored who spend that money here We are definitely and un animously opposed to a liquor outlet in any form in Newmark et Money spent on liquor Is not spent on groceries or on hard ware or clothing boots shoes etc And yet some people say that the storekeepers want a liquor store here The fallacy of that nr- Station To Be Closed Trustees Act Against It is only to evident A liquor store would be est ablished for the convenience of the people That is true The groceterias in town arrange their goods for the greatest con venience of their customers But arc any of us naive enough to sup pose that it Is just for our con venience No It is for the pur pose of selling more goods and making a bigger profit And that would be the purpose of a liquor store Do not be so naive as to think that a liquor store Is set up for the good of the citizen a- side from the profits A liquor store would help to solve the problem of drunks on the roads streets by mak ing liquor available in the hom es Instead of in beer parlors or lounges You all know that a liquor store is only the first step to be followed before long by the establishment of beer parlors and lounges for the convenience of the customer who wants only one drink or two or three or four Gentlemen we as church mem bers and as businessmen respect fully but strongly submit to you that we are opposed to the open ing of liquor outlets in Newmark et and appeal to you as councill ors to reject any move to intro duce such to our community Signed on behalf of Pine Orch ard Union Church In the face of a rumor thai the City CNR statlen be a resolution opposing mm a move on Tuesday night A letter to be sent the president of the CNR with to the Board of and the federal member of parliament The resolatton says that It has been intimated to the village that the station will be closed It further states that the trust ees believe that traffic at the station Is and will be greater than ever and we vlgonnssry prottsLavalnst any redaction of service to the village and the large area In King township served by this one and enly station Ernest Smith chairman said he heard that the volume of re venue at the station has Increas ed and that a profit was shown He said that an at tempt several years ago had been made to close the station POLICE CHIEF Len once polico chief of the former SuttonGeorgina police
