section They considered their election as Coun ty commissioners an honor for their municipalities as well as themselves they explained COUNTY COLLECTS IN TAXES The county levies in from all municipalities in York county amounted to They were due on Dec 20 and have been paid in full but many municipalities owe the taxes levied under Sect ion of the Assessment Act These were due on Dec Past Warden Marshall McMurchy re ported to council on Jan The latter taxes are on assess ments added to the municipalitys roll after the regular assessments have been completed The money levied under Section 51 is to be used to reduce the budget Mr McMurchy explained Theyve done it The old eye sore on the north east corner of Eagle and Sis Newmar ket was removed by a bulldozer yesterday For some years the property at the entrance to town lias featured an old burnedout house and barn First the barn went and then the house in yes terdays bulldozing The house vacant for some time has been partially burned by un known causes at least three times in the last couple of years pect of Office Specialty assess ment When the assessment roll was completed the assessors and Associates and re turned to the clerks office on October 31 there was no ten ion on the roll of what believe to be the largest most valuable single business property in the town he declared Later some figures were in serted under the authority of the clerk and with his knowledge He initialed them in my presence said Mr Armstrong But even yet the description as it appears on the assessment roll is not suf ficient to comply with the Assess ment Act In a study of he assessment roll Mr Armstrong told the Court of Revision on Monday night there appears to be a short age in this firms business assess ment The roll contains no ap parent explanation or apparent justification of this error Mr Armstrong explained that the Office Specialty land is asses sed for and the buildings for This gives a total assessment of The rate of the business assessment is set by statute at 60 per cent so that the business assessment figure should be 191607 It is shown as on the assessment roll This shortage amounts to 2- At the rate of 50 mills Mr Armstrong said the apparent shortage would be taxes per year This error was called to the at tention of the town clerk Mr Armstrong on January 16 ami was referred the court of revi sion The Assessment Act pro vides for the extension of time for the filing of an appeal against an assessment in which an obvious error Is indicated Advice of the town solicitor Kenneth Stiver was sought at Monday nights session of the court of revision He argued that technically speaking the request should be refused as it was not a palpable error as required by the assessment act I was never in favor of win ning any points on technicalities replied Alex a member of the court He suggested the should be guided by their own conscience intelligence and knowledge of the matter He pointed out that Mr Stiver was the councils solicitor not the court of revision solicitor If there is the possibility in anyones mind that a mistake has been made said Mrs Violet MacNaughton we should extend the time to permit that citizen the opportunity of appealing the as sessment With all due respect to the town solicitor added Alex Hands 1 feel we arc supposed to go on basis of our own con science and common sense and not be ruled by technicalities The facts appear to be as stat ed by Mr Armstrong agreed Edward Wrightman If mistakes have been made in the calcula tions they should he corrected I am in the position of having to advise you technically replied Mr Stiver If you want to pro ceed on another basis that is your right I would suggest that fig ures he mentioned in the resolu tion instead of just saying the business assessment appears to be calculated too low he added I am trying to save everyones time If you want me to start talking about this assessment I could go on for most of the night said Mr Armstrong Mr Wonch opposed the request Mrs MacNaughton Mr Hands Mr and Mr Wrightman upheld It The 10day extension was limed from January from Newmarket when going to Bradford to buy one com modity make other purchases The people have the right to vote on It he added Reeve Edward told Mr Kent he was premature in bringing his recommendation to council he would take no active part in it one way or the other He said if 23 per cent of the voters submitted a petition and it were found to be In order council had no alterna tive but to call for a vote Mr agreed that there might be a lot of people In favor of bringing a liquor store and brewers warehouse Newmarket but added that he knew there were a lot who were against the move He said he was not a teetotaler himself taking little when he had a bad cold lie would remain neutral on the subject have had no strong views expressed me on either side said Councillor John I agree it is a matter for the people to decide but I suggest it involves the expense of taking a vole Mr Choppln recommended that motion be tabled The people should certainly have an opportunity of expressing opinions to the members of council after they hear of this through the paper Afterwards the motion could be brought for ward at the next or following meeting ho suggested At first Mr Kent opposed Mr motion stating that no vote can be held for two months after the passing of the bylaw He agreed to post ponement and said he would like to hear from all who favored proposal Rotary Club Challenges Aurora Council Members Aurora council members ac cepted an invitation from the Rotary club for a most challeng ing occasion They were invit ed to attend a dinner at which would he given seconds to suggest improvements for the town and council mem bers would be given seconds to reply or speak in defense of policies The mayor is al lowed seconds to close the meeting I think it would be a good idea go said Councillor Keith Nisbct We have been
