Burling one each to ignite the at tack David kept the Dynamos from hitting the shut out skids This is a great time of the year It is always good to receive Chris tmas cards from all our sporting pals It brings back fond memor ies of yesteryear Who remembers the old rink at the north end Aub Rowland was recalling the inbetweenperiods scrambles for pennies The fans used to toss out the pennies and out would go the boys after them Coming out of somebodys hot pocket they sank into the ice and you had to have a knife a chisel or long fingernails to get them up The old rink had the square corners and many an unwary roo kie found himself propped in the corner when the sessions on the ice reached the boiling point It seems but yesterday when Bill Lou Bovair Fred Thompson Dick Hugo etc were playing the first game in the pre sent arena That would be in Then on came the good home brew junior clubs with Butts Cor- bett Doc Ames Chuck and Harry Thorns Scrooge Parker Lister Harvey Soul- Fred Murray Bill Thorns Beef Belfry and Shorty Most of the travelling in those days was by train or trolley and after a successful road win the team would be welcomed home at the York Radial station or CNR by a large following of fans Hoc key was serious business in hose days and there was no TV to keep the disciples by the home fire side and radio was just starting to be heard Do you remember the lineups outside the arena on hockey nights The gates opened at pm and it was every man for himself as the fans streamed through two doors to grab a van point Then came the era of the Gall ant Little under Andy Davis and Bill Hancock and their final winning of the Memorial Cup Those were lively days The town was deserted when the Red- men were playing those all im portant contests in the Maple Leaf Gardens with Stratford and later against The wild celebration that foll owed the championship victory was something every hockey an will remember The ringing of the atop the irehalt sent the few stayathomes streaming on to Main St and the celebrations were on I guess that was the last time the old fire bell ever rang Another memory that always seems to come back was the year Intermediates went to the Ontario finals On that team from Newmarket were Beef Bel fry Shorty Turan and Red Wall er They operated as one unit with Charlie and Bud Stephen son from Bradford on the defense and Kid then living in Aurora in goal The team had three subs but they got on the ice seldom it was a sixman sixty- minute hockey team In the late forties the Trolley League Sutton Bradford DR KELLY DENTIST about a minor lacrosse revival under Matt Walsh Bob and Ad ams this past year which promis es to make Newmarket once a leading lacrosse center Much of the credit for this burst of lacrosse enthusiasm
