are used in the making of the dressings are donated by home and further con tributions are needed constantly Colored cottons can be used but the white ones are preferred They can be left at the WI Rest Room on St Other activities of the New market Cancer group during include the distribution of welfare baskets the provision of necessary drugs for two can cer patients and the financing of the transportation of cancer pa tients to Toronto for treatment More than 100 was spent on the last item Alt this work was for cancer patients in New market Since there is a constant call on the group for assistance lo cally more active workers are needed Perhaps it is not pos sible for some women to spend two Thursday afternoons a month at the workroom but their help would be welcomed if they could come for only a half hour the Cancer Dressings com mittee say Each extra worker will make it possible for more dressings to be made The group is meeting this af ternoon in the Agricultural Board rooms A delegation of reeves from North Gwillimbury and King townships and Newmarket Roy Pollock William Hodgson and Edward accompan ied by A Gathers and A A visited High ways Minister James Allan re cently The topic of their visit was the possible development of an eastwest highway to connect No highway at Schomberg with No at Greenbank Reeve told council on April of the interview fol lowing an inquiry by Councillor Gladstone He said that Mr Allan had suggested that the preliminary details should be worked out vith the local mem ber of the legislature road being taken over by the province as a development road He said that the province had assumed many roads in the past and since it was running behind schedule wanted to complete them before taking on any new ones Before anything is done Mr explained that the highway department would take a traffic census Motorists along this route through Gleimlle along Davis Drive east to would be stopped when spot checks were made to where they were from and their destination If the traffic warranted such a road there would be one in this area added the reeve but not Mr reported necessarily in its present was the possibility of the lion He said that the policy of the highways department is to keep highways away from con gested areas We have been promised the traffic census and spot checks said Mr We plan to return later this summer to Minister Allan We cant expect action unless interested people impress on the department the need for the road replied Mr A traffic census wont give an ac curate picture of the situation because much of the eastwest traffic detours to No to avoid this poor section of road he said Anything that will bring this road under the departments jur isdiction should be encouraged If the first step in it becoming a provincial highway is to have it made a development road every effort should be taken to speed the work he added ARBITRATION COSTS It cost the town of Newmar ket 102085 in for arbitra tion expenses apart from the in creases which were granted to the police following the arbitra tion boards recommendations When the request for salary in creases was refused last year by council the police referred the matter to an arbitration board NOW BACKED BY YEAR GUARANTEE The Pine Orchard Will be held on May and this will be a visit to York Manor with a program Mr and Mrs George Smith Shirley and
