When we hear the name Canada a great many things connected with it come to mind Hall the Governor General a greater actor the Victor Mission farm orients and other tilings but un- til I listened to Dr of Angola I never knew it was a member of the family Who founded the hospital where carries on his magnificent work It is a very tiny hospital when founded it but it grown to meet the needs of a i part of Africa which through the years grown conscious When Dr Strang- took over the space and equipment were sadly but at his plea for help United church stepped in and helped until now it is a any community coutd be of talk about the was marten lightening- He told us in a recent count of lepers a certain area there were ioSWWO find on completion of the tvOUnt it would probably mount He told us of the hopeful aspect If leprosy can be detected in the earliest stages it be cured But there lies the trouble In the early stages the victims knowing they will be ostracized if found out hide the spot and do not coma to the clinic until it cannot be hidden and then of course it is a diff erent matter Now they have trained watchers in many vill ages and these on finding vic tim in the early stages hustle them off to the clinic where the cure is begun As it is highly contagious the sooner all lepers can bo removed from contact with those not affected the sooner leprosy will be ended and become like smallpox ty phoid and diphtheria the ex ception not the rule Dr Strang ways said- he was often asked why if some of these many indeed churches are self supporting and preached to by natives should be called on for financial aid He said it is the training of these native preachers and teachers which must be financed When I met Dr at Trinity after church I remarked on the won derful work he was doing and he said Mrs Colvilie no work could be more The gratitude and warmth of these people is like that of children It is all joy to help them Hear- Store In I a too and lit be was to hate ft man so permeated with the spirit of that it showed in hi face and In every word he He told us too that ad many diseased among the natives come from lack of proper food They need trained agriculturists to show them how to make the most of their land and they need to understand sanitation and hygiene It time now a In time the harvest is waiting but the la borers are few One can only hope that Dr Strangways is spared long to carry on the work he is so well equipped to do and that he will be found by others actuated by the same diyinafire The Other Institution Ive been thinking of was the Hall The night we went down to hear play at the concert we also heard what other young people were doing I wish every music lover in Newmarket could have heard that program for it was a reve lation of what young people are accomplishing in the world of music Take for instance the North Toronto Collegiate Insti tute orchestra I fancy were about members and Ihey played from the Swan Lake Ballet with an aprcciation of its content and a timeness of pitch that was amazing in a group where the personnel changes every year to a great extent They played as if they loved to play and handled their instru ments like veterans At the end one of the students conducted them in their school song The adjudicator said of them as well as of the Sudbury High School band that they were remarkable that he could hardly believe could be obtained to what must be at best a tory personnel The conductor of the band was asked how they financed their long trips and he told us how every organ ization in the city including the school board gave liberally un til a thousand dollars had been raised and they were off There were some good school choirs and choir all good and enjoyable but those we have in Newmarket and they had not the quality of novelty that the orchestra and band present ed There were two violin solos one by a tiny seven year old and one by a lad of Both in their classes were outstanding There were the two numbers played by the McGregor School recorder ensemble That odd little instrument is coming back and is going to find a place in our school music There was a piano due by a girl and boy of which team I thought the boy the better A piano Concerto in minor piano accompani ment in lieu of an orchestra was very fine Altogether it was a program of promise These young people in the springtime of their lives making music that all their lives will be a safeguard a refining influence a doorway to congenial friendships and a source of comfort and refresh ment that they have earned Music surely hath fooattrsABdfaQ Con Foreseeing the need to the Newmarket Recreation Cam mission in promoting minor sport in Newmarket a group of sports minded ladles have formed a be de termined by a formula rather than by an individual or by a cabinet decision as it is at pre sent Mr indicated that farmers are to blame and must take this responsibility upon themselves T jr- Engineer In order to the manager of grain marketing division a consulting engineer is now being engaged for the purpose of determining the ad visability of using water trans portation and to decide on a site for terminal storage It would appear that terminal storage lo cated on water with the thought that a portion of the crop in stor would in orderly mar keting and improve the general structure The two days of conference were taken up with from prominent farm loaders interspersed questions criticisms and sugges tions from the floor The York County Federation was well represented with be- tween and delegates for the two days As the meeting drew to a close a list of lions was drawn up and an una- nimou5 standing vote agreed to accept them as a policy of the marketing conference Policy Statement f The Policy Statement of the Marketing Conference is is lows have full production mo dern and progressive methods of production but we have not help ed ourselves to a modern market ing program with salesmanship control of supply and surpluses Mr said Don Swain secretary of the Ontario Vegetable Growers Mar keting Board in addressing the farmer delegates said I would personally like to see an expres sion of unity of purpose come from the floor of this Conference defining the needs of agriculture in the field of farm marketing legislation and stating the deter mination of organized agricul ture to accept nothing less by action at Ottawa than the necessary legislation to enable us to help ourselves solve our own problems in marketing CoOps Plan Arthur president of the United Cooperatives of On tario speaking of the future plans of his organization said We plan to increase facilities for production of plant food as rap- idly as is practical maintaining quality and pioneering if advis able in liquid fertilizer We plan to continue to expand the provision of petroleum pro ducts of highest quality if neces sary to build or acquire refining facilities to secure access to sources of crude oil and to own and operate lake vessels- Mr said it is quite natural to ask why the farmers have gone into the field of mar keting grain and how it came about The organized farmers were prompted to get into the grain marketing field by popular de mand from managers and direc tors of local coops and grain marketing boards The organ ized producers were satisfied that well informed- management and staff with the welfare of the far mer as the prime interest could do belter job of establishing a satisfactory market as compared with the old method where the welfare of the farmer was not considered necessarily important It was recognized thai in order to do effective and satisfactory job of marketing grain in peace time economy a great deal must be learned and there Is no bet ter way of learning than to get into the business Up to the time that the grain marketing office was open ed there was no method of solv ing the problem of depressed prices the moment there was any indication that the farmer had produced enough Any method of marketing that penalized the farmer for growing enough is not good enough to maintain a satis factory standard of living on the farm and it is the determination of fanners through their organi zations such as and com modity groups to do something This meeting with malice to ward none affirms its conviction that part of the solution to the current deterioration in farm in come lies in the establishment of an effective commodity mar keting program in Ontario and in the rest of Canada In look ing to marketing as a major means of stabilizing and improv ing farm products prices this meeting recognizes that such a program cannot be carried out effectively if farmers the provin cial government and the federal government do not meet certain Federal Government We request establishment of legislation if such is necessary to assure farmers that they can carry forward their marketing programs in both the national and international fields and that their marketing boards can enjoy full rights to make deductions for services and for stabilization funds The establishment of non- incentive floor prices based on a known formula as set out by We ask that assurance be en to Ontario Farmers that there will be an improvement in administration of the provinces ij agricultural marketing Wo request a now PORT- FOLIO a marketing and co-op- oration department To achieve this improvement we request that this new department be in the near future with emphasis on MARKETING not on production We compliment the Provincial Government for its marketing legislation and for its assurance that if and when further leg islavf a he granted request a formula for and system taking producer opinion by a marketing vote Farm Organizations This Conference refers to the Ontario commodity groups and to the Ontario Federation f culture the following resolutions for their consideration and fof their immediate action recognize that WE can solve our problems To that organization and collective marketing is a real and lasting means towards a solution of our current maintain unity within the ranks of our farm organ- and to press on with vigor and vision towards and more extensive programs To ask to set up a marketing g department to work with the commodity groups and op a progressive program To launch a cooperative salesmanship program in Ontario commodity groups through their own salesmen- will vigorously sell farm pro- ducts in the world markets and that the provincial give some leadership in this endeavor That the only type of eminent agricultural policy that can be effective is one which is comprehensive and covers all aspects of Canadian agricultural economy We re- commend that the federal government
