peri od scoring assignments Newmarket Era ud Express March rue J Barney is Theatre pass recipient this week A very active and diligent worker with our did figure skating he presented a proposition to council provide us with a heated arena nest winter He spoke on behalf of his several assistants and two town plumbers who Indicated they would donate their services free to install the equipment if the town would provide the funds for the equipment Yon can read elsewhere about the program to give us a comfortable arena There are not too many persons today such as Barney and his band so as a tribute to these gentlemen and Mr in particular salutes them this week Their names should go down in history as the gentlemen who made the rink comfortable Hasketts HASH By George Haskett Newmarket Sports Editor NEWMARKET OPTIMISTS Newmarket Optimists are giant killers Schomberg Lions had an opportunity to practically wrap up the North York ban tam hockey league title Tuesday However the Hub Optimists didnt see it that way and upset Bill Breedohs Four goals in the first period three scored by John Hopper set the Optimists rolling on their merry way to victory It was a big evening for the Op timists hotshot line of John Hop per Wayne and Larry Bone Hopper scored four goals two and Bone added three valuable assists Not to be outdone by his up front mates valuable rearguard Brent Mae- nab hit the chords for two tal lies Peter and Bill provided the scoring ac tion for Bill boys with Newmarket doing a good job of checking the visitors ace Don Graham J Beaten At Beeton V Poor Attendance Friday At Optimists Carnival The only disappointing feature of the Newmarket Optimist clubs fancy dress carnival held at the arena Friday was the slim attendance There were only in costume and less than at tended as spectators The club lost money on the ef fort and it is regrettable that the attendance wasnt larger as all proceeds were earmarked for boys work by the club among the town youth Messrs Jack Hamilton and Don Warner chair ed the program committee and did an excellent job in lining up a busy and colorful program A feature of the program that drew many laughs was the game between Keswick and Newmarket Opti mists The game ended in a tie However the costumes of the gladiators were worth the price of admission alone Members of the local team were Ed Bob Watson Art Hurst Andy Sinclair Wanner Ross Cecil Andrews and Don Menard Top performers with Keswick were Art Pollock Gavin Morton Sid It has come to our notice that all the senior B hockey equip ment was sold recently for 180 The equipment would cost at least 1000 to replace Possibly it was a mere coincidence but the equipment went to Geraldton and it will be the arena managers son recently moved to that metropolis Our understanding is that or more boxes of equipment was srtipped north Said shipment contained all the senior B hockey equipment stored in the arena The goal equipment alone even if used was worth the Somebody grabbed off a whopping big bargain This paragrapher questions whether the arena commission who we suppose sanctioned the sale had the authority to dis pose of this equipment without town council approval We have nt been able to establish actual ownership However if it was the property of the town coun cil should have been consulted If it didnt belong to the town it certainly should have because last years team sponsored the arena commission cost the taxpayers of this community ap proximately 2800 At least that is mentioned as the deficit on the club operation and no doubt John Public had to foot the You and I as taxpayers pro vided the money to get this team off the hook so I contend we had a claim on the equipment and it shouldnt have been sold our consent The approval of the sale was never brought up in council If it was the pro perty of the arena commission we just have to sit back and suffer because it seems their wonders to perform the Com mission go ahead without con sulting council or anyone If the equipment was for sale the least the Commission could Arthurs and Bernard Rye Don Warner was the best dressed refj have done was to advertise the fact and then it could have been digging his air force uni form out of the moth balls to perform his important duties Following the con test the Newmarket York Coun ty Band provided music for the skating period The following winners were declared in the fancy dress car nival Fancy dress costume girls Gail Wilson boys Wayne War ner John Cameron David Smith comic Glen Townsley Tom best dressed couples Jessie Hoard and Marilyn Hurst Charlotte Hoard and Robert More Cochairman Don Warner and Jack Hamilton along with Opti mist club members worked hard in preparation for the event and wore very disappointed by the slim attendance disposed of at the best price Did you see any advertisement No neither did I I do know an effort was to organize an intermediate club here last fall A request was made to the Commission to bor row the equipment aforesaid but the request was turned down It does seem a crying shame to see this equipment sold at this ridiculously low figure when it might have been used here Its loss will definitely make anyone toying with the idea of organiz ing an Intermediate club next season think twice I feel the Commission should make a statement and publish the amount of equipment that went out with this transaction While were on the a Commission ruling that irks us Is the one that stipulates the arena cannot be rented out to town organizations for less than I feel this ruling re moves the arena from the com recreation center idea We recall with many pleasant recollection the many east- west hockey games the broom ball sessions and other such fun and mirth providing exchanges while and before the artificial ice commenced Now that it costs 50 there arent any Last summer the chaps work ing their fingers to the bone to raise money for the swimming pool fund were billed per Intermediates Eliminate Aurora Aurora faded out of the Intermediate picture Tuesday before record 500 fans at the Aurora arena as they went down to defeat be fore BeeTots won the best of seven group fi nals four gomes to two After scoring the equalizer a early in the third period wilted due to a man power shortage and came on furiously to score three clinching goals were dogged by hard luck losing de fense kingpin Walt Fines early in the second period Ron Simmons scored from Phil Nichols to open scoring after a scoreless first period That was Auroras only second period goal as they fell behind Grant Winters kicking in with a v top effort fired the equalizer for the night rental for the rink to the tune of 350 for the pool We do know the rink wasnt be ing used at the time Towards the end of the hockey season the rink is idle at times so why not let the people of the town use it for an equal share of the gate receipts After all doesnt it be long to us one and all and wasnt the purchased and artificial ice installed with the idea of it becoming a community recreation center I contend the 50 ruling has removed the arena out of the recreation center clas sification Question is how do we get the arena back to be as it is sup posed to be a community center One solution is to combine the recreation and arena commis sions A reasonable suggestion because after all the recreation commission has one idea in mind that to provide recreation for our citizens young and old and the arena after all is a community center It says so on the front Being a firm believer in the idea that anyone spending tax payers money should be elected not appointed we feel both the recreation and arena commis sions or the combined commis sions should be elected by vote Heat heat were going to have heat in the arena so you can deal off your long Leastwise well have it if Barney sound proposition pre sented at Mondays council ses sion is given the green light Barney spokesman for four or five helpers and a couple of community minded town plumb ers outlined the proposition whereby all the labor in connec tion with the installation would he provided free gratis All the town has to do is to provide the heating equipment Equipment will cost approxi mately The donated labor will save approximately I dont believe well ever get a better offer Three cheers department Its the big first game of the junior c semis at the arena to night Parry Sound are the in vaders The Sounders disposed of Georgetown to earn the right to move in against the Smokies In the other bracket of the On tario semis Stamford is leading The problem still remains the same for Messrs Simmons Al corn Chapman and the Aurora If they expect to rap ture the intermediate C group tilte they have to locate a way to beat Beeton BeeTots at home Saturday at the Bel- airs despite an improved road performance had to yield a decision to home Beeton Bee- Tots The win gave a 32 lead in games in the best seven group finals The first period brought about the downfall Regular netminder Paul wasnt on hand to take his regular sta tion between the uprights Jim took over the goal for the first period and before the woke up to the fact had them on the run sliced the lead to in the middle session but in the final round the Tots reestablished their two- goal margin by the 32 Phil Nicholas contributed two goals to pace the Aurora effort while Ron Simmons Al Smith and Mel Vail supplied the other Aurora goals John three goals and two fired by Colly an were the chief contributing fac tors in the Belairs setback
