Howard Anderson of Yoik Federation Of Agriculture Will Sponsor Safe Driving Week Boy Scouts Are Organized On A New District Basis A meeting called by District Commissioner Edmunds io form a South Lake Dis trict Committee was held in the Community Hall at Keswick on January 1956 Most groups were represented by their lead ers and members of their group committees The interest in the need for such a meeting was ap parent by the large attendance and general participation In the discussions Such a committee is designed to work with the Commissioner to promote Scouting for boys to coordinate joint group activities such as rallies training courses and through the District Com missioner to keep Provincial Headquarters informed of Us progress and requirements The election of officers to the Committee resulted in a fair representation of the District which is hounded by Aurora Stouffville Uxbridgc Mount Al bert and Bradford Those elect ed for the current year were Chairman Rev IT McLcltan Aurora vicechairman Mr J Johnston Keswick secretary Mr Newmarket treasurer Mr J Williamson Aurora members Scoutmaster Stewart Keswick and Scout master Diver Drive York Urges Higher Provincial Subsidy For Paving Roads An increase in subsidies for paved road construction Is being requested by York County coun cil for all municipalities In the province County council passed a presented by Reeves Roy Pollock of North and Clarence Davis of Aurora that the Highway Improvement act be amended to permit the payment of an per cent sub sidy on approved road pavement construction At present the sub sidy Is per cent on roads and SO percent on bridges and ap proaches Mr Pollock said that the re quest was being made In view of the additional revenues mil lion dollars which the province will receive from Increased motor vehicle license fees and the extra burden municipalities aro carrying because of Increas ed traffic It would aid municipal ities in having paved roads and help them to get away from gravel roads he said Reeve Alfred Markham township said that the resolution was creating a hardship for the rural areas that have more gravel roads than the urban sections He sug gested that an increase In sub sidy should be requested on all types of road construction Ralph Corner warden re plied that It would be a big assistance to the county if the subsidy could be increased to per cent paved roads When ah increase of that size is spread oyer the province It represents large amount of money Mr Corner said V Park Field Commissioner Pilling from Provincial briefly outlined the duties of the District and Scoutmaster These positions are held by Mr A of Sutton and Mr Everett of Newmarket re spectively A working constitution was proposed and adopted to permit the committee to go into immed iate operation It was the general feeling of the meeting that as a result of this scouting in will take on greater mean ing to the boys parents and citi zens of this community The Ontario Federation of Ag riculture along with its member organizations and the Ontario government in a joint program of safe driving in nun areas have declared February to 25 Rural Safe Driving Week With the Ontario Federation of Agriculture pledged to the task of helping to improve the safety of rural driving some Ontario farm people for whom the OFA speaks are throwing their weight behind the provincial governments current ly intensified efforts to reduce highway accidents During the month of January some Ontario farm forums arc being asked to select what they regard as the greatest safety hazard in their community In making their selections they have been cautioned to bear in mind that the human factor is the greatest single factor con tributing to unsafe driving on the roads Once the Farm forums have made their selections of the greatest safe driving hazard in their communities they have been invited to submit a 100 word report on what measures they recommend for eliminating this hazard Over G00 in prizes is being offered to the Forums judged to have submitted the best reports A top prize of ma will be awarded to the forum submitting the best report for the entire province Organizational meetings have been held by in Ontario counties during the month of January to prepare for a Big Rally Night to be held February in each county At the Big Rally Night throughout the ing the malicious damage by Kenneth Hodgson who lives a few houses north of the church Mr Hodgson told police he de cided to investigate the commo tion he heard at the church He took the license number of the car the boys were driving which aided the police In locating the suspects The church red brick structure although not in use at the present time had been in good condition before the will ful destruction took place on Sunday Magistrate on Thursday Jan They were remanded for sentence until to day A fourth youth a juvenile appeared In the County Juvenile court at Aurora on Friday on similar charges The boys Ronald Young How ard Leonard and Frank Friend pleaded guilty of breaking into an unoccupied summer cottage at Lake Wilcox and of setting fire to it as well as to a second cottage and the Community Hall All three buildings burned to the ground 1 The fire at the Community Hall was on Saturday Jan and on Monday night the Aurora Fire brigade was called to a fire at a Lake Wilcox cottage While fighting that blaze the firemen saw a second one on the opposite shore of the lake The following morning they answer- on the Fire Marshall for an In- veatlgallon Norman and
