29 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Encourage Planning For Newmarket than ripe citizens protection v THE -V- i r- j m A 1 i- TO J TOWN PLANNING FOR NEWMARKET The Editor The time is more when Newmarket should have more from the vagaries of haphazard growth masquerading under the name of progress An overall plan is required whereby a pro perty owner could know be fore he buys the nature of the future development of his sur roundings No such plan exists let alone the machinery for its mainten ance A plan was attempted by and was subscrib ed to in good faith He had not only his clients and his own In terests at heart but also the de sire to see Newmarket profit by becoming a more attractive town Although the machinery for maintaining this plan was weak his basic idea was sound and genuinely benevolent We require an plan for town development including a zoning bylaw which can be maintained for the life of pro perty rather than the life of a council We should know where indus try may be located and be able to tell a prospective industry Here is a suitable site for you The land- about this site is re- i ABOUT OPENING OF MILLARD AVENUE Dear Mr Editor Having attended the previous meeting of that august body The Council and having observed the wheels of progress in motion I thought it exped ient to write a friendly letter to SAYS COLUMNS I HUMOR WAS SPITEFUL The Editor Spiteful humor is very out of place in an old newspaper such as the I refer to your Corners of last week It was written not as much to amuse people as to justify and you on the ultracontroversial editorial attack subject The Opening of Mill County Federation of You know as well as I do that average factory hand just loves to have some tangible thought like this to base his comparisons of living on Whereas as you know too things are very much amiss in the agricultural world and it will take another great catastrophe to remedy conditions Please remember that Can ada Is still an agricultural coun try and that farm very inferior to those in other lands Yours truly C J Sharon Lane or How One Man can Persuade the Majority into Overruling that Outrageous Minority which for so long has Overruled the Majority It seems unbelievable that a person relatively new to the town and certainly new to the council can inside of one meet ing perform the miracle that has been so unsuccessfully at tempted by older and more sea soned councillors Why it to me that it must bo all of two years since this subject first was broached and how It has foot balled Great names have risen and fallen against the onslaught of the terrible Minority But given one hour our hero has vanquished all But thats the way of the mighty However let me state right here that If an issue as old as this can be settled so expedient ly by our new council a word of warning to those other issues served for similar purposes etc at stake look out you are doom- 1 r l 1 a z A r i SINCE MAY 1917 The Era has been 5 cents per copy To make an extreme understatement we suggest that we are a little late in raising our prices particularly in comparison with other businesses or even other types of publications But finally we resort to passing along part of the increased costs to our readers i- t 0ur last increase in the yearly subscription a ceiit one was made in the V H J f EVERYBODY KNOWS that the price of newsprint has increased more than percent in the past years The recent increases have resulted in questionable legislation being introduced by Premier Duplessis in Quebec We hope our readers understand that we have held off increases for as many yeais as possible We admit we have not acted like other businesses in this respect a 1 r h fc THE FEBRUARY INCREASE NOW YEARS r Take advantage of this announcement and your employees and labor here who would rather work locally and profit by time and money spent commuting Such an outlook does not dis courage an industry but our past policy seems to have been to say We want to tax you come and build in Newmarket The shopping area should be zoned as well The promotion of a shopping center on Yonge St now made more practical with Millard Ave to be opened will- be good for the town because lack of competition has made some of our Main St businesses wallow in monopolies without which they would be healthier Policies within such businesses akin to some government de partments have been so dis couraging that many prefer to drive to Bradford to buy or else do their shopping while commut ing from Toronto We need in creased shopping facilities and a longrange plan to make it attractive for commer cial enterprise to invest here- Is it too much to hope that this council may remedy this defect and promote a longrange and allembracing plan for the town instead of breaking down previ ous attempts at planning and rid ing roughshod over its property owners as seems politically ex pedient John to a short life- Maybe you wont be settled to the satisfac tion of all but certainly the majority or In some cases is it will he delirious Now since Millard Mon ster out of the way may I make a- humble suggestion Take the land along Street laid aside for light indus try Whats to become of it A shopping centre could be Induc ed to open up along that stretch helping to provide the revenue Remember it is only a matter of time before a shopping centre is built close to Newmarket so a progressiva policy would be to get it in the corporation awl receive the assessment In closing I trust that the council will uphold its promise to ensure a slowing of traffic along Millard I think we can trust councils promises Also a bouquet or two to Reeve and Councillor Chop- pin for their stand was a valiant fight Sincerely Norm Hathaway CARETAKER ANSWERS PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD OLD DOBBIN AND AGRICULTURE Dear Sir Your editorial question Has Dobbin Still A Place deserves and doubtless will receive a reply from various angles and more experience than this read or can draw upon Meanwhile I would like to make an observation or two which may he considered at any rate newsworthy I recall fact for example that across the past quartercentury a tick clock In a nations life many millions of horses and mules have disappeared from the farms not to mention the towns and cities on both sides of the US Canadian line According to the experts be tween the years approx imately million acres in these two countries have been sown to direct foods for human consump tion which earlier times had to be sown to feeds for horse- power I have no doubt that this amazing evolu tion or revolution in North Am erican farm technology is defin itely linked to the terrific war job in terms of food and fiber by American and Canadian ag riculture In the struggle be tween freedom and tyranny on the one hand and saving myriads of lives across Europe and Asia In the immed iate postwar years on the other Then again I Imagine that the above trend as a consequence of the mechanization of agricul ture Is not unrelated to the present surplus food headache to which ton thousand editorials and news stories have been pointing since May Despite the accent being today on Uncle Sams Invest ment of billion In stock piled food as I see It the fact has to he measured by two top considerations that a single crop failure In these dlan fields could quickly change the picture from abundance to scarcity and skybound prices i2 that in the year the UJ3 Treasury will dedicate billion to defence expendi tures regularly every weeks between January and December As see it Editor a mechanized agriculture which goes Into an economic tailspln would on the major de pression which aimed and todays Kremlin leaders still hope for One of the cheapest arid surest ways to this latter hope to devise ways by which the North American fanner can share In the prosper ous times He not doing so today cm either of the line I The Editor We dont condemn a man for asking for an increase in wages I am one of the caretakers of the public schools who did ask The health officer reported the schools dirty The school board says No increase in wages un til it is cleaned up I defy any one to keep any place looking and span when young sters are using it However I took the health of ficer through my school in nil the classrooms toilets etc and he told me everything was okay as far as I was concerned How could the school be Christ mas holidays floors are washed and waxed everything is clean ed the same is done at Easter Summer holidays a general cleanup is made because we have more Six months of the year we go to the school twice every Satur day and Sunday to fix the furn ace If the weather is very cold we go late at night to fill the hopper as it does not last all night Our salary is a year The Home and School pays us a meeting for our extra trouble The Stuart Scott care taker gets more because there are four extra rooms The new school caretaker the same as we do for three rooms no coal to shovel I shovel to tons I have six classrooms office and teachers rooms two halls two flights of stairs two basements I supervise the boys basement is old the walls are high It could never be made to look like the hewer schools What the school board said about us was like a slap in the face but give them credit they are trying hard to keep the taxes down I am not complaining just stating facts I like my job All we ask is a little considera tion and fair play Thank you P Pitt Caretaker of the Alexander Muir school GROUP- FOR The Editor Although this letter is directed to all East taxpay ers it is particularly directed to the residents of subdivision num ber one The context deals primarily with excessive taxa tion and the means whereby such a nuisance could be elim inated in part To be the elimination of excessive taxes can be accomplished by the in auguration of a ratepayers as sociation A group of enthusiasts are ready and willing to attempt such an undertaking if a mini mum degree of cooperation is forthcoming To those residing in subdivision number one please give this your most serf consideration and when you decide please contact any of the four telephone numbers as list ted below Those residing in number and divisions will have the opportunity of viewing the progress made in number If satisfied you can organ- individually or you are vitcd to join with number one the practicability of in- dividual units such as each sub division inaugurating separately and remaining so is inconceiv able consequently it is suggest ed that on conclusion of the in auguration of number one the remaining eight organize and eventually municipality will be organized In one group For benefit of those who are unfamiliar with the reason ing behind our motive they axe advised to study the activities of other municipalities north and south of us who suport similar organizations with successful re- suits in their endeavor to assessments and govern ex cessive taxation Of course another motive for our enthusiasm is the of our recent council mem1 and the complacent att- of eligible voters itself presents a problem Not- withstanding no problem is too- large to be solved if individual- and collective efforts are made without fear or favor As to the advantages of an association they are to mention however quote an old saying together we stand divided we fall the situation In the final- analysis with regard to circum stances relative to the of a ratepayers association in the municipality of East it Is advisable to re- firstly our membership dues The maximum would cents per year the minimum U 10 cents per year the rate will depend entirely on membership SecondIyand very important is the agricultural districts In this respect the farmer has over a period of years suffered by taxation and will suffer- continuously until some measure of sensible adjustment is made in the field of taxation Think it over If you approve telephone any one of the follow- numbers
