a firebug was at work last week after two cottages and the com munity hall had been destroyed by Organized a vigilance committee Volunteer vigilantes stayed on guard the- night to prevent further damage Two members of one group which stayed on duty until af ter at a cottage were later arrested by Vandorf con stables on arson charges The boys with- two other youths were convicted of having start ed the fires which had led to the organization of the vigilance committee In presenting flowers to Mrs Marshall McMurchy wife of the new warden of York county Miss Audrey referred to her as the leading lady of the county a title which aptly de scribes the many new duties which fall upon her this year Reeve was acclaimed to office on Tuesday Jan As well as giving her husband the sense of security which he must have to perform his duties well Miss told Mrs that she would be called on to attend many public func tions Concern was expressed for Mrs that with four small children these new re sponsibilities would demand the frequent services of baby sitters County Commissioner Fred Arm strong reeve of Woodbridge whose quick wit has enlivened many past sessions of county council immediately suggested a solution He recommended that some of the 1955 reeves in com pulsory retirement this year at the express wish of their elec tors might be called to perform the services of baby sitters 1 Here is a close one that didnt count as the Gorman Smoke Rings met Whitby Highlanders at Whitby Monday night Despite this near miss the Smokies did score enough to gain an impressive win It County council was ask ed to give consideration to en larging the County chambers in a report presented on Thursday Jan by the warden and commissioners With members attending county ses sions the chambers are crowded arid considered to be the only part of the county building that is Inadequate in size There arc two more members of County council than when the county established its headquart ers in Newmarket in Since then village and having more than municipal electors for county purposes have elected deputyreeves Mrs Alma Walker Is the first deputyreeve of vill age and Milton Burke who was a member of Pickering County council prior to moving to is that villages first deputy Two opposing viewpoints were presented when town council discussed its policy on contracts at the January 16 meeting A resolution was defeated which recommended that all purchases be channeled through the clerks office that tenders be called on all purchases and jobs estimated to cost more than and that purchase requisitions for all items under that amount but over 25 show at least two quo tations Councillor Gladstone in recommending these policy changes argued that a complete revision of the present system was needed Reeve Edward said that the only difference in the present setup and the one recommended in resolution was that purchases would be channeled through the clerk than the town en gineer The town of Newmarket was embarrassed by the story in the Era that expenditures totalling thousands of dollars had been made without tenders said Councillor Ridler Members suffered a reflection on their good names and it is a poor busi ness practice to buy anything without getting several prices he said Just A Story What was printed in the pa per prior to the elections re plied Reeve was untrue unfounded and ridicu lous It was just a story As far as being humiliated by any thing in the paper why it should be taken with a grain of salt People didnt believe it any way he added Councillor said that there was so much at stake in large items that the elected rep resentatives should not do the buying The clerks office was set up to handle the business of the town Members are ineligible for election if they do business with the municipality The oath of of fice we have taken prevents us from benefitting from any deal ings with the town continue Mr and for my part I intend to sell nothing to the town To Stand Trial For Theft And Arthur Johnson and Charles of no fixed address were committed to stand trial for theft and receiving stolen goods when they appeared before Mag istrate O yester day They were retained in cus tody when the magistrate refus ed to lower their bail which had been set at The charges were laid follow ing the theft of mink pelts from Powell of Union- on Dec The pelts were valued at Three of the pelts were exhibited in court with Constable of township police con ducting the investigation while I am on council I would advise the rest of council do like wise Had Several Prices I have not been involved with the direct purchases of ma terials replied Reeve Wright who explained that the en gineer did the purchasing with tenders having been called on all but one item last year and several prices obtained on every purchase I was years with the Department of Highways and handled contracts up to and in cluding 900000 Surely council places confidence in the elected representatives The motion is not intended in any way to curtail the auth ority of any committee chair man said Councillor John the seconder to Mr Ridlers motion If all purch ases are handled through the clerks office there can be no of favoritism The only time that tenders must be brought before council is when the chairman wants to accept other than the lowest bid For Fashion If we pass this motion add ed Councillor Alex it would enable us to conduct the affairs of the town in a proper fashion Mr told of an incident when he had called the clerks office regarding delays in garbage collections during the holiday season and was told to check with Councillor Alex Hands chairtnan of the garbage committee Thats ridiculous charged Mr Its Mr Hands job to supervise the department He does not have to run around and- collect the garbage cans Not Purchasing Agent The clerk is not a A3 w J I- we rage Era And Express Single Copies Price to Increase Single copies of the of the people and the year In engineer We are not going to save money if we have to hire extra staff for the clerks office to handle this work said Deputy- Reeve Violet who recommended that council think the question over for a while I have never heard any complaints of past purchasing Councillor George Haskett agreed with Mrs and said If the engineer and others are doing good work why change the setup There would be less criticism of the council chairmen if they were not involved directly in purchasing The system of dis tributing town business to the various firms in town does not recommend itself as a good pur chasing habit Also the fact tht one contract was awarded last year without inviting competi tive bids demonstrates that something should be done plained Mr Indigent Patient Costs Up For County ex- To Stand Trial For Criminal Negligence And Drunk Driving Eugene 2 New market was fined 100 and costs when he was convicted in Mag istrates court yesterday of il legal possession of liquor The liquor was seized by East Gwil- police following a two- car crash east of Holland Land ing on Nov Last week was com mitted to stand trial for criminal negligence and drunk driving Five persons were injured in the accident and a Newmarket man died of multiple injuries Too Sweeping Councillors and supported the reso lution The mayor in voting against it said It is too sweep ing and would interfere greatly in the successful operation of town business It would require much extra paper work he added Hospitalization for indigent pat ients In York county cost the tax payers 85072 in an in over the past indigent hospit alization costs were Ralph Corner last years warden in his report to council last week explained that the sharp rise in costs during had been due to the hospitals increasing their rates for in digent patients Some municipalities recorded decreases in indigent hospitaliz ation costs in North and the county But municipalities In the county had increases for the year with King and Whitchurch each recording in creases of over YORKSIMCOE HOME AND SCHOOL TO MEET HERE Home and School council will hold a general meet ing at the Prince Charles water supply sparked an exchange of views at council meeting on Jan The recommendation by Robert King medical director of the unit concerned the Beech- wood Park development of Charles Boyd No one disputed the contents of the letter The disagreement arose regarding its future Coun cillor Alex moved that it be filed as the Planning and Industrial committee had no business he said in discussing it as long as the resolution pro hibiting residential development in town remained on the books If council wants to rescind that motion it can consider the letter then Councillor Belugin added Reeve Edward Wrightman rec ommended a joint meeting of the three committees Planning and Industrial Water and Sew ers and Roads and Bridges be called as soon as possible to dis cuss mutual problems He sug gested that the letter be put back in the correspondence for next weeks meeting at which time the solicitor could be present to give advice on it Councillor Gladstone disagreed with both views He felt that regardless of any reso lution on the council books the letter should be referred to his planning committee adding governed council in not govern this years coun cil In fact the council may have to do things that the council did not do I have no dispute with Coun cillor opinion that there SUTTON REEVE CHARGED Reeve George of Sut ton York County commissioner appeared In magistrates court yesterday on charges of impair ed driving and having control and care of a car while under the influence of liquor No evidence was presented and the ease was remanded until Feb The charges were laid by Chief Donner of the Sutton police force will be changes replied Mr but there is nothing to do but write Mr Boyd and say that as long as the resolution re mains on the books his subdi vision cannot be approved The letter referred to the next meeting of council- Dr Kings letter states Information has been receiv ed pertaining to the abovemen tioned proposed subdivision and an inspection of the site has been made It is noted that the proposal to subdivide includes provision for water supplies and municipal sewerage facilities From the narrow of view of the subdivision alone the pro posal presents no difficulties in the public health phase safe However the large blocks of water might give rise towwllv future assurance I of water supplies in the and the municipality well advised live to future water order to prevent wide emergency In respect to Beverage faclliV ties an addition of a substantial new load to the already sewage treatment can hardly be given public health approval and for reason I would recommend thatv this proposal to subdivide be approved -until- adequate a age treatment facilities entire community Vi Wheat Agricu s First Sturgeon Is Caught In Lake Simcoe Since on shore in the evening with his catch Game Overseer Harold told him that he was sure It was a sturgeon The follow ing day Mr had Dr of the biology staff of the Department of Lands and Forests at Maple come up to Sutton and examine it According to Dr it is the first sturgeon to be caught in Lake as far as his department knows since Apparently as early as a sturgeon fishery existed in Lake and
