for last Wednesdays important game with Port Perry Whom do you think Ernie finally checked in with to do the catching None other than Tod Toddy making his first official appearance as a hardball receiver did a terrific job and besides that in his first and only trip to the plate in the darkness abbreviated contest got a hit This effort me thinks rates Tod the award and Theatre pass this week doing the best job they can and as for cheating that is strictly hokum The gents mentioned will know who is re ferred to and I hope they will endeavor to curb their exuber ance Ninetynine times out of Wright went the route for Aurora allowing seven hits Wright working impressively fanned eight Tom and Ron had two hits each to spark Newmarket while Ted was the explosive gent for Aurora with three safe ties There is welcome news on the junior lacrosse front Jim Bishop has returned to the coaching helm with the Green Gaels This was the advice re ceived by arena manager Stan Smith in conversation with Jim Bishop on Friday All difficul ties that arose between the play ers management and Jim Bishop were ironed out at a meeting last week Jim Bishops return will find wholehearted approval among the Gaels supporters here There is excellent harmony in the club and the players coach and management are all set to Bishop expects to have the Gaels practicing at the arena this week In preparation or Tuesday SUPPORT THE SWIMMING POOL Branch in a game played at Brampton Saturday The win may be an upset In the making in the lacrosse semifinals Most of the Gaels supporters who watched Brampton and Long Branch perform here tended to give Long Branch the edge on making the finals At the mo ment the surprising Brampton Excelsiors lead Long Branch two games to one in the best of seven semifinal set Brampton sparked by Larry Kendall and Bert Russell walloped Long mm JIM BISHOP make a tremendous effort to bring Newmarket its first Dom inion lacrosse crown Coach If you riood monay to fix Of your Phone GEO SIMPSON the other hand Messrs Haley and Glover were certainly pitching terrific ball against Pine Orchard A continuance of this masterful chucking could bring the Rockets another Stan Cook triumphant march The point that amazes this corner is the number of Hub fans out at the Mount games In fact you do not see them over at the fair grounds for games here We guess they to get out and absorb some country air Thats the only explana tion can think of at the mo ment about the officiating before they think They are after all deal ing with a bunch of impression able boys who are bound to imitate their elders and parents always remember with a chuckle one of our few appear ances as an umpire It happen ed out at Pine Orchard when the regular assigned umpire didnt show One customer who prob ably didnt pay to watch kept up a continuous heckling job Maybe he was right certainly we werent the worlds best um pire however calling them as we saw them impartial- I would guess there were close LAKE FINALS The Lake Simcoe league playoffs have reached the frantic stage Three teams re main in the hunt for the Stan Cook trophy Albert and Zephyr Rockets by taking Pine Orchard in three straight games have qualified for the finals Mount Albert and Zephyr Blues will declare the other finalists in a best two out of three set to be run off this week The finals between ville and either all have a jot in the kitty we would sur mise when the final returns are in Congratulations are in order to Jack Robinson and the Aurora Rotary peewees The Aurora kids played smooth ball to kick the Newmarket lads into the discard Aurora will now rep resent the North York league in the OBA This paragrapher was a bit disgusted at the endless argu ments at Tuesdas game Base- umpire Lome Keffer finally chucked coach Robinson out of the game and rightly so If I had been the umpire I would have done the same thing Per sonally dont hold with these prolonged arguments be tween coaches and officials Several of the fans in our esti mation didnt help matters by their continuous riding of the of ficials As we remarked to one fan who was shooting off his face You know so much about it why dont you get out there and help the kids Grownups we feel have to watch their and qs in this regard If the lads hear their parents or grownups suggest A great soul prefers moderation 5 the of Seagram of tomorrow moderation today Just for a lark wo walked around behind the screen and said to our heckling pal Were doing this job for nothing You seem to know a lot about this game So how about you taking the mask and doing it Natur ally he talked a good game but wasnt ready to take up the chal So we went back to um piring and didnt hear an other peep out of the heckler the rest of the evening Maybe thats what some of the other umpires should do You never hear this corner hardly ever that is complain about the officiating We figure the boys out there are doing the best job they can and certainly they are in a much better posi tion to call them on the field than someone or more feet away August Jottings Guess the Hub will be short one good ho ckey player come December We notice Lome Babcocks fam ily has moved elsewhere Lome was one of our promising hockey lads He was one of the king pins In the Gorman Smoke Rings run to a bantam crown All his Newmarket hockey and baseball pals will wish him luck in his new location We were pleased to see an other of our fine bantam hockey players Brian Million paying a visit to his old stamping grounds recently Brian was a key member of our OMHA cham pionship winning bantam club Its tough to see promising young hockey players like this depart Its congratulations to Sally daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard for winning the motor boat racing title at the Severn Falls regatta recently Congratulations go to another well known district sportsman Its a baby daughter for Mr and Mrs The plrehvchief of the simcoe circuit will have to be extra careful now in his calls now that he has a family to sup port Kidding aside Is doing a tremendous job In the Simcoe league games While we think of it Bill Mair and Cliff did an excellent Job coaching our in the recent tournament They took over from Frank on this occasion as Frank was ex ceptionally busy keeping tournament running in apple pie order Certainly It was a well organized tournament and Frank Is to be congratu lated for his efforts Heres good news for the soc cer faithful Ken Nelson reports that Newmarket and Vandorf soccer clubs have combined and were scheduled to officially open their season at last Saturday We hear theres a move afoot to stage a swim meet between Aurora Newmarket Oak Ridges and Wilcox Lake Wins Opener Bill Schomberg Sod- busters started their Ontario rural softball association Friday was their first round opposition Coach Walt Thompson nomin ated Doug Brown as his starting pitcher The move paid off handsomely Brown came up with an airtight fourhitter and his mates unfolded a snappy fielding game This combination furnished with a win in the series starter The game drew a large fan turnout at Schomberg Friday Game two in the best of three series is hooked for and judging from their handsome start the Sodbusters should hustle through this set In two straight band got on the hit merrygo early and stay ed on it as they pounded out 18 hits against two Don was the Sod busters ace bagging a triple two doubles and two singles while bombed away for three hits in Schombergs starry hit perform ance Jack Robinson and Stew Pat rick are working on the
