ask the band to serenade Premier Frost if our undue burden is not lifted he suggested Apparently all the blackbirds didnt get baked In that pie for the king There are thousands of them in the Marsh area each enjoying a diet of corn- Mr Prank Marritt county weed inspector said this week that few farmers in the Keswick area are growing much corn and it is because of the blackbirds Mr told of one farmer there who had lost between and percent of his crop to the birds Its only recently that the blackbirds have discovered how delicious the sweet milk from the corn is- They come by the thousands from the marshes Theres a mechanism avail able which makes a periodic noise like a shot gun blast It is effective in the control of the birds but the cost is prohibitive It is around an acre he said It is quite a jump from grow ing corn to growing poppies but this weekend poppies should be in every display win dow and on every lapel The years slip and fortunately for those who suffered the loss of sons husbands brothers and fa thers in the world wars the passage of time eases the pain But thai same flight of time causes too many of us to forget the sacrifices For the thousands who occu py was an indication this week that the continuing county of York would prefer all land transactions for all municipali ties within the county to be un der the jurisdiction of the North Registry office located in Newmarket At present such land transac tions for the southern sections of the county known officially as the East and West Riding of the county are conducted at the South Registry office Toronto along with those of Metropolitan Toronto The Registry office provides the gravy and the county could use that gravy commented Joseph Dales reeve of Newmar ket when the registry offices were under discussion during the reading of the warden and commissioners report to County council at the opening meeting of the fall session on Tuesday Nov The report which was accepted recommended that Metropolitan Toronto be respon sible for the South Registry of fice Mr Dales argued that with the planned addition to the North Registry office there would be room for all the county municipalities record Toronto should let go of some of those municipalities and have them come here he added When Toronto takes over the administration of the South Reg istry office the continuing coun ty will receive a portion of the purchase price of the building Mr Dales said that as long as the land transactions of those southern municipalities which include Woodbridge and townships Rich mond Hill and village are under jurisdiction of the South Registry office the pay ment to the continuing county of the percent by Metropoli tan Toronto will be deferred This will constitute two hard ships for the county he added After the meeting Mr Dales explained to the Era reporter that a resolution will shortly be presented to County council re questing that these southern municipalities in the Continuing county be permitted to be under the jurisdiction of the North Registry office At present there j is no legislation In effect to per- this If the South Registry office continues to record the land transactions for these muntciV palities after takes oyer that office a of the fees derived from them will go rectly to the municipalities con cerned out the county itself wilt not benefit The county is hard pressed for money and the revenue from the Registry office would be help to all sections of the coun ty Because of it the levy by county council on all the mu nicipalities would be less the There are 30 in the cast To clear the way through the usual red tape necessary to build a new public school the Newmarket board made its first move at a meeting held last night On the basis of municipal sta tistics which the board has just received more public school ac commodation demands in the next five years will be suffici ent to warrant the building of a school At the same time the board has no way of knowing that a school will be sufficient No one knows how many more houses will be built in New- market thus bringing more families to town in the five year period that matter it is possible that or rooms will fee needed at the end of a five year period but the board cannot prove it The school hoard set its plan ning machinery In motion for a school while construction is still not completed on a four- at the Stuart Scott school authorized earlier this year by the board As months were required to complete the red tape require ments in building the new wing accommodation was not avail able for kindergarten classes in September and it was found that many classrooms were over crowded even without kinder garten On previous occasions school trustees have claimed that they are not permitted by the pro- vinco to authorize construc tion of a school building with out positive proof In statistics that it is needed At the same nit is obvious that available tics on population usually a few months old do not show what the future population growth will be and they are more than likely to be a num ber of school rooms short in their proposals It A Jackson supervising principal of the public schools presented population statistics to the board at last nights meeting Making up the total of the school population in five years time are present grade one to four pupils pre school age children plus an mated in houses which will be in the new Leo nard subdivision on St by the end of this year and an estimated 15 in the Boyd sub division on Eagle St No more than pupils are permitted in one classroom Di viding into the total school population in five years time the number of rooms re quired is found to be There are rooms In the four public schools now and with four more rooms under construction the present total is Therefore on the basis of minimum figuring Newmarket will require nine more school rooms in five years But the statistics include only new houses which will be com pleted and have families in them by end of next month In the subdivision alone it is reported there will he an other 100 homos completed in the nottoodistant future The average being one child per home it would mean that three additional rooms would bo re- for that subdivision alone Other complicating factors will be 150 apartments the construc tion of which has been by town council more houses in the Max Boag subdivision on Eagle St in the Edwards sub division south of Gorham St and in a number of other small de velopments The board is sending its popu lation to the public school in spector the first move required in getting permission to build In discussing the school prob lem one member said that the high school building could be of use to the public school board another high school were built School trustees are the first to admit tjntf the problem will not be solved by the construction of a 10room sdioot As yet they have not made any decisions on the number of rooms they will build TRAILER NEEDED BY DESTITUTE FAMILY An appeal for assistance was made at County council yesterday by William Hodgson deputy- reeve of King township behalf of a destitute family
