-orv- J UJ4TE HIS BEST TROPHY V rfM IS- I- w WB sis- Tk mere Grit is even important to a growing pullet than teeth are to a growing boy and We can cook foods to make them soft for human beings However chickens are fed whole grain and they cant handle it unless they have the proper grinding equip ment- Having no teeth all birds naturally swallow their feed whole But they instinctively eat grit or gravel to break down their food When a hen swallows a hunk of insoluble grit its re tained in the gizzard to help grind up the feed so it can be digested Grit is especially Important in the Restricted Feeding Plan be cause it is a heavy grainfeeding plan Oats recommended in this plan require a great deal more grinding than other grains because of its high fibre content A hard gray gran ite grit is best with black specks of mica in it The black specks seem to attract the birds atten tion and cause them to eat it readily The grit must be acidinsoluble one that wont dissolve or How 4H And Junior Farmers Clubs Develop The Rural Young People mm Port Arthur Police Chief Tom Connor bad better hunting in the home of Gar Stead than Mr Stead had on a duckhunting This bobcat Invaded tho Stead cellar and was wrecking everything when police shot it When Stead returned he led Bis four couldnt compare hunting trophies to the J i PIG STAR I For the rural young people as with others formal education is only a beginning Farmers are learning every day from one an other from newspapers farm magazines radio and television- Farmers also obtain information about farming at short courses field days and meetings fairs and shows As well agricultural schools and colleges and our De partments of Agriculture could be mentioned For the young people who live in the country there is an op portunity to start learning the business of farming at an early age Particular reference is made here to the clubs These clubs provide braining for mem bers from to 20 years of age These young people select ac- cording to their particular inter- fizz when dropped in a solution roore parlicular Of sulfuric or muriatic acid This is so it will not dissolve in the gizzard Materials such as lime stone dissolve in the presence of the birds digestive juices and arent much good for the grinding job To maintain the growing pullets health the acid of its gizzard should not be destroyed by feeding any lime products Lime does lower the degree of acid in the gizzard Feed gray granite grit from the time the chicks are started Sprin kle fine granite grit on top of the starting mash each day until the chicks are three weeks old then change to grit In crease the size of the grit again when the birds are six weeks old to hensize grit In recent tests comparing vari ous types of grit the chickens re ceiving granite grit developed gizzards that weighed more at eight weeks than the gizzards of the chickens receiving no grit Gizzards linings too were twice as heavy as those of the other chickens Grit not only helps de velop stronger gizzard muscle but also helps pullets grow much larger gizzards A big strong gizzard helps save feed because the bird can thor oughly grind up the feed and make more of the nutrition avail able in its body Then too a bird with a large gizzard can handle more feed And this pro motes maximum growth and pro duction and adds up to boosting the profits That may be a dairy or beef calf project swine grain forestry or tractor club project Especially for the girls there axe projects that in clude food clothing and garden club projects The motto of the club is Learn to Bo by Doing so each member must raise or care for an exhibit which will be dis played at the clubs Achievement Day For example a calf club member will care for a calf ing the summer months and show that cab at the clubs Achievement Day in the fall As well as this practical train at their meetings which are held about once each month club members learn to stand be fore their fellow members and give reasons for they have made in a Judging class Meetings are conducted by the members themselves Add Don Smith Opens New Queensville Feed Warehouse Era and Express classifieds bring results From a mobile grinding these clubs are directed from the Ag ricultural Representatives of fice with the help of public spirited volunteers These vol unteers or club leaders in many cases are former member It is the job of the club leader and the sponsoring organization to assist by helping to locate and interest young people in the movement As well they help with arrangements for meetings and Achievement Bays and the club leader usually takes charge of some part of a club meeting Junior Farmer clubs are oper ated somewhat differently They are an entirely self governing body They have no sponsor or any other ties Their motto is Self Help and Community Bet terment Junior Farmer clubs provide leadership training ex perience in citizenship agricul tural and homemaking informa tion and wholesome social func tions Junior Farmers hold their meetings once each month They are partly educational and part ly social The early part of the meeting is given over to busi ness and consideration of some educational topic In addition to sponsoring clubs the Junior Farmers also carry out many other projects and functions Among these are farm machinery projects and judging competitions where they are striving to learn more about their occupations Health League of Canada re ports only percent of Cana dian children drink the mini mum amount of milk needed for good health Turfiey Turkey prospect are good for the efficient grower but able for the marginal producer Prospects ore for increased numbers of turkeys in United States and all Canada especially Western Canada This may cause a more competitive market and possibly lower selling prices this fall However this does not ne cessarily reduce profit The pro fit can bo maintained by lowered cost of production and better merchandising of your turkeys You can take advantage of mo dern packaging and freezing killing birds as soon as arc prime to increase profits Feeding birds an extra month to hold for a certain market low ers profits as the older the birds the poorer is the feed conversion Better management will pro duce fewer culls and less lower grade birds A more economical heavy grain feeding program will cut production costs and increase your
