Clark has come to hand this week It should be of special interest to all junior minded hockey fans in Aurora Sports Editor With another hockey season fast approaching you fans are no doubt interested in the plans of the Aurora Junior Hockey club for the season We would therefore like to take this opportunity of expressing our thoughts on this matter and at the same time outline some of the factors which must be con sidered in making the decision between Jr and Jr hockey Before going into the immedi ate problems facing us we would like to comment on hock ey in general in Aurora After looking back at the hockey situ ation over the years we feel that it would be preferable to have the franchise of the ho ckey club held by some local group or authority which could ensure a continuity of ef fort from year to year With the franchise passing from the hands of one individual to another it is difficult to maintain a continu ous yearbyyear effort pro duce good players and teams Too often in the past a group of players has been developed into a good junior club only find that when these players were of age no good were available to take their places For this reason or for lack of interest the changed hands and new- franchise holders found them- selves in a difficult position We feel that a program should be worked out whereby the young- players are brought along year by year thus providing a continuous source of local talent for the junior club and at the same time providing for boys of all ages the opportunity to play hockey Thus to sum up we would suggest the formation of an or ganization to hold the franchise This organized body should be closely associated with the Minor Hockey Association to ensure the development of younger players In this way Aurora could expect no lean years when little local talent Is avail able We might say at this point that contrary to the opinion of some it has always been the policy 6t those presently with the club and are sure of those previously con nected with hockey in Aurora to use local players pos sible years ago local talent was not developed the responsibility for which docs not fie with the Junior Hockey club and is something over which they have no control Anyone who may think that we prefer to import players has only to visualize the headaches entailed in locating such play ers trying to find employment providing transportation and as suring their attendance at games to understand that we would ob viously prefer to use as many local players as possible How ever to keep a proper perspec tive on the matter of local play ers it might be well to mention here the homebrew content of some of Auroras better known junior teams It would seem that in this as in other situations memory played tricks on many of us In when they became Junior champions the club bad no local players on the regular lineup In when Aurora went to the Junior C finals there were only five local hoys on the roster We fee it is worth observing that unless It is a winning team or at least a contender the crowd cares little the local content of the team Getting back to the immediate problem of deciding whether to play Junior B or Junior hockey this season we would say at once that the majority of the fans seem to favor a return to Junior hockey However in order to ice aC team it is nec essary to dress four players in each game who are residents of the municipality of Aurora With the shortage of junior players without disrupting the minor hockey program this presents some difficulties Also in C only one import is al lowed and players in the Metro area would not be eligible Another Important factor is the matter of a suitable group ing Last year there were no clubs in the near vicinity enter ed in Junior competition and there was no alternative but to play B for obvious reasons This year however several clubs in the greater Toronto area have interest in playing hockey and one or two are al ready committed The alternative Junior B offers the advantage of more imports no residential restrict arid a great rervojr players since players from the area would be eligible We have previously stated our position with respect to local Skyers iaMj thus alternative would attractive local players were Also the Ontario flcKey ntipn year the of the for hockey form to defined in Bill At the same grant Aurora and other teams for the Metro area the privilege of continuing to draw players from the new Metro area provided the team was entered in Junior com petition This arrangement is only valid long as Aurora continues to enter a B team and would end if a year went by without such an entry It is difficult to fore see whether such an arrange ment would be advantageous in say a year or two Although the OHA regulations could quite possibly be changed again Do Nuts Will Trek To Saturday Top query of the week has been When do the DoNut boys go into action again Coach and manager Broadbent now have the answer at hand There are four midget clubs left in the running for Ontario laurels They are Newmarket and Paris John Bell midget B series convener telephoned on Thursday to advise Coach that it bad been to have the four remaining teams meet at on Sat urday Sept to play a tour nament to decide the Ontario champion Newmarket was advised to re port to the diamond at As yet the DoNuts op position hasnt been named The two remaining teams will play an afternoon game and a final and championship deciding game between the survivors will be held in the evening if requested it should be noted that Newmarket had consider able difficulty in gaining ad mittance to the Metro area This point must therefore be considered although we do not relish being in a position where by our decision may adversely affect future teams One last point in connection with B hockey concerns the cost of op erating such a team On this we will only say that last years B club cost considerably less to operate than the previous years C team There are many other points consider connection with the present and future plans of the Junior Hockey club wanting to make this statement any necessary we have tried to confine our com ments to what we- feel are the most important points Since the club is above all an Au rora club we would appreciate any comments suggestions or criticisms you may have to offer In conclusion we feel that if the people of Aurora and district support the team and whoever may be responsible for its oper ation a real hockey club can be developed and a successful year both in records and receipts can he achieved Aurora Junior Hockey Club IX Clark SecTrcas Zephyr Blues Tie Set With Pine Orchard Zephyr Blues Pine Orchard That was the officially post ed score after the two
