old bell tower was re moved recently and although the building looks neat and compact without it it the appearance that one of the basic elements of the archi tecture is missing It is pos sible that a stranger would not notice its absence but Newmar ket residents who have been familiar with the building for many years do miss the lower accidents involving Newmar ket residents We heard one young man make the comment this week that it is better to stay off the highway He in vented a new twist to a famil iar slogan With all these ac cidents recently he said I feel we should adhere to the good old slogan If you drive dont take your car if you take your car dont drive Traffic accidents seem to come in bunches Last week end there were two highway We packed up some dog stat istics from Councillor Are the expenses involved in building and maintain ing a swimming pool too great for a community the size of Newmarket We do not know the answer ourselves We understand that a few years ago the Newmarket Lions club investigated swimming pool costs and turned down a possible pool project because costs seemed too high we were told that the maintenance costs discour aged the project water supply was another problem Since the Lions made the investigation we understand new developments in the construction and maintenance of swimming pools have made Inexpensive pools can now be built and the water supply has been eliminated by filtration equipment Snakes it pos sible to use the water over and over again Organizations halve considered a swimming pool project at other times The volunteer fire department started a swimming pool fund in the thirties Ac cording to the fire there is approximately in bonds set aside for a pool The fire department is a small organization in numbers and it would be a diffi cult undertaking for the members to launch a swimming pool project At the same time the members arc uneasy about having that money lying around doing nothing- It would seem that this year is a good time to have a serious approach to the swimming pool idea Certainly there is more interest In swimming since the Marilyn conquest and as a result there is more interest in nity swimming pools We have no doubt that the capital could be raised by a organization of or the community service clubs combined Before the start of any program it would be neces sary to have another investigation into the costs and the most suitable type of pool An outdoor pool would he acceptable and maintenance costs would be low An indoor pool would be Meal One reader suggested this week that an indoor pool be constructed in the basement of a new school so maintenance heating arid general costs could be at a minimum but we have no idea what the department of education would have to say about it Nevertheless the thought is good The Newmar ket Recreation this summer provided trans portation and swimming instructors for community swimming at Mussel mans- Lake The Commission should be interested in a community It would be the obvious organisation to make new investigations into the possibilities of acquiring one THERE IS NO LIMIT Earlier in the year Councillor A opposed a large on the grounds that would be by school in the future What prophesied is al ready coming before the completion of the subdi vision and wavier taxes are yet to come Mure rooms arc needed at Newmarket high school as well We heard tin suggestion that the high school be used as a public school and that a new high school be built As for costs there seems to be up limit in sight ITS A WORLD One of troubles with the United is that we kcci expecting or even trying to make it do things for which it was never intended says the Financial Post The UN for example is not intended to achieve purely national aims Its supposed to be concerned with the general good not the good of any one nation Yet mem bers of the JERK am being find it cant be used to their own not projects Some countries would like to see the used to maintain the status quo in the world would like tin UN used to promote one variety another of As long as the UN doing job none of special goals will ho wholly were faced fcng as the UN is fulfilling its function In tttft World its going to target of criticism from and pointed nations Another thing the UN to bo is an alliance or ton that matter any sort of alliance The UN world or it la nothing if all the Ganaiftan Barii- the Mis bo very harmonious doubt a it wouldnt represent the country Talk of withdrawing from the UN and talk of UN failure can usually be traced back to one or the other misconceptions Before the new session logins lets discard our misconceptions about the UNs aims The date for our Slim attempt to conquer Fairy Lake has been advanced a week it which float down Fairy Lake and loosen up the plant growth through which he must make his way if he is to con quer the lake Slim gave up work in his on Hie secret grease formula- Many of our farm culty farmers face these days is the loss of income suffered from their socalled secondary enterprise Let us explain Take for example the dairy man Aside from his milk cheque of his quota price of milk and a steady income he also had a sale of surplus stock salvage value of cattle sold for slaughter and a market tor bull calves for veal lie probably had in ad dition to this some income from a cash crop which he needed n his rotation like wheat or barley What is the now lie still has his income from milk and chances arc that in actual amount it isnt very much less it was a few ago But the export mar ket lor has just about petered out and what sold is either high class breeding stuck or else commercial grade- low price The salvage which cw he obtained the stackyard is less than half of what it was four years Veal is at cent the price of fall wheat about us much The same is true fee Just about main part is probably and give a The extras ate down Pigs are down where they were sub sidy two years ago baying skidded over a hundred weight in three months On a lot of they are a second ary enterprise Farmers break oven on It there not any money it What is the farmer to do He can either the main enterprise on his farm or else he can look to some other source to supplement in come The question is Is it wise to put even more egg into the one basket Some say it is Af ter all if a man is well equip ped to produce something and the machinery imple ments to do it and the spe cialized labor in many cases he would be foolish to branch out and buy more equipment That may be so but in some cases the Secondary enterprise is based on the byproducts of the main Growing fall wheat on a dairy form where there is an abundance of manure is a handy way la got income lgs calves may take care of surplus milk or skim milk It might well be a better to see if one can find something else to bolster the Income received from the main business things occur to the first one is a slaw project but it can be grade or purebred breeder has the today lest the of his cattle the beef now have some system of If the a prop ft more an testing h to mors that It to the pounds ol milk per eavv that count there he a very nice far stntpte dairy ia no breeder in the country that use a belter cow to advantage than what he and increase his return one way la income a to the and advertise the results The second one Is to some thing about some Wiat the lean year in wheat and the of m ox wheat fe to an improvement In Ml certainly has no price the end product Somebody is us over the barrel the not the
