Pages from the Editors Notebook As weekly editor we receive many invitations to social events and we attend asmany as possible in the community and district which the serves There are many pleasant events which we could attend in the city but we usu ally turn down the invitations because of the lack of time Af ter all our first interest is in the local district We made exception recently by attending a social gathering at the Crest Theatre because members of the Davis family who are pioneering in Cana dian repertory at the Crest are natives of Newmarket The Davis brothers Murray and Donald and their sister Bar bara are acquaint ances and a member of the cast George is a friend of ours from school days It was a pleasant affair held before the opening of A Jig For A Gypsy a play written by the Peterborough newspaper publisher Robertson We expected to meet Mr but unfortunately he was not able to attend because he operates the daily Peterbor ough Examiner we were not surprised that he was absent on a Tuesday evening Besides a number of Crest people we met col umnists Bruce West and Frank Mr West was ex cited about the next day which was the opening of school He had reason to be boastful one of his children was to start public school and another was to start university We enjoyed the theatre talk also discussions about sports cars strange as it may seem A number the Crest friends are sports car enthusiasts and we were delighted to find one that had been a driver at the Glen Grand Prix the year we attended When it comes to food at these social events we attend the city cannot compare with the home district It seems to us that a sandwich at a city so cial event is merely a When it comes to a little party our heart really belongs to the of the Cheerio Club of Mount Albert At Mount Albert a sandwich is not a symbol it is a reality We attended the Mount Albert United church anniversary ser vices on Sunday and after wards were fed by the ladies of the congregation most of them members of the Cheerio Club We have had pleasant times at Mount Albert on other occa sions sampling their food must admit too that the Sha ron ladies are about tied with those of Mount Albert We have really come down to the basic theme of this ar ticle food We hope we are not insulting the Crest but when it comes to the food we prefer the country to the city invitations We have always made it a policy not to refuse an invita tion if at all possible which comes from out Mount Albert way From the Files of 25 and 50 SEPT The rink composed of A O Little and has been no industrial expansion in New market drth past number of years In indus trial employTSwnfeiBi feen ffiftthe decrease One of the major industries rceiitiy laid off men and past two years two small plants have closed or moved towfi third largest employer has been laying off more workers Reeve report the last meeting of council a He attended contained a number to Newmarket From what he learned experts on industrial ex pansion Reeve said that iiidustiy wants to locate new plants hi industrial areas industry is not interested in tax revenue for a town nor for providing emplpym6nt for its workers Industry must be sold oil the towtt before it will locate It all means that a dtijfcult job where there is strong competition Toronto has spent annually for the past years on the promotion of industrial expansion and as the reeve says Toronto would not have continued to spend that much if the investment were not paying off The investment did pay two thirds of the new industry in went to the Toronto area although the proportion has decreased since that time Newmarket has no land of any significance for new industry at the present time The possibility of the town on land outside the corporation by the reeve The time for action on the matter in Newmarket is not in the future the fact is that it is overdue The residential assessment hasbeen increasing steadily and probably by next year St will greater than that of industry steadily causing higher and higher school and higher taxes for the home owner Torontos investment brought results Surely can afford to spend a certain amount of money iind its efforts to bring more industry here One new plant offering good employment would be worth the Investment in a town industrial salary And the reeves suggestions that market publish a brochure and invite an industrialist to work on industrial are good ones WISE MOVE BY COUNCIL The town council of Newmarket is to be commended for making a financial contribution to the school for retarded children There was a question about a legal technicality in making the grant and it was not certain that the town would receive a kickback grant from the province but council acted wisely when it overlooked these minor considerations to give financial assistance to the school A resolution by Councillors Robert and A passed Monday night gave the authori zation for a grant of The school is already in operation and pupils are attending to receive instruc tion from a ted teacher As it was pointed out by Councillors retarded children should be given a useful type of education While the school will receive a month for child from department of education the necessary arrangements to be made prevent the school from re ceiving any money front the province until January In the arc general expenses to be met the wise to a and concern itself about any ftt a later date As for the legality of the we see no reason why the grant not tee fe It fergfti te each year to iM ration of are accepting more responsibility for the type red within the years THE SWIM No matter what might be said about publicity and the attempts to commercialize Marilyn Hell her was a great event for Canadians The word nationalism is difficult to use because it has so many connotation but daring to use it we say that Marilyn Balls triumph was good for Canadian nationalism Canadian been starved for the type of thing that Marilyn did and that i6 the main reason for the nationwide dis play of enthusiasm It is difficult to believe that Cana dians have gone mad over a Canadian Usually we are watching Americans doing it One Vancouver newspaper said the was suicidal as was the marathon run by the Englishman Peters Only Peters failed said the newspaper so there was much criticism about his suicidal attempt Miss Bell succeeded and there was no criticism the news paper said Its sports writer said that the swim was not sport We understand what the sports Then we will not call it sport and there will be no significance in the fact that we do not There have been many wonderful conquests by men and women some of did not benefit humanity others of which did Some were brought about by an interest in sport and some were not They could have been called suici dal finding the north pole breaking the sound barrier climbing Mount Everest learning to fly They were done because there was a challenge for the human someone had to prove that they could be done Marilyn Bell at once became some sort of symbol for Canadians and the gifts which were offered spon taneously made people pleased Afterthoughts about getting on the bandwagon recently attached strings for commercial gain are distasteful to most The Marilyn Bell story could end now and be com plete Then it could be retold and retold We hope it does but we are afraid it will not AUDIT BUREAU OF CIRCULATIONS To many readers not familiar with the less publi cized side of the newspaper business the fact that the Audit Bureau of Circulations is observing its anni versary next month may not appear significant Yet the formation of the brought the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the advertiser and the publisher These sound business relations fostered by the A BC have made the high editorial quality of our newspapers inane tally possible with out advertising revenue newspaper publishing would be a limited operation The caliber of news reporting feature writing and illustrative material as you know it would be virtually impossible to present the A BC is the keystone of relations between the advertising buyer and the advertising seller It is a nonprofit cooperative association of publisher advertiser and advertising agency members Together through the they operate as the bureau of circulation standards for the advertising and pub lishing industry At regular members of the auditing staff visit each publisher members of fice Mere tin auditor performs an exhaustive audit of the publishers circulation records The auditors findings are then by the measured and reported on the basis specific standards With these reports it becomes possible for publishers to provide advertisers with verified data the facts that arc necessary for the success and protection of adver tising investments For years the ABiC has served the United States and example of selfregulation within ail industry For years the ABC has fulfilled Its purposes to define net p a d circulation determine the facta about the circulations publishers and to re port these facts accurately and without opinion On the divisors feel that tills swim should be pull ed off in about two weeks Its a to do it so that influential citizens in this town will start over the winter about a money project to build a good pool in town It is beyond our under standing why it isnt compul sory for every driver or owner of a motor car to carry insur ance for public liability and property damage With all the talk these days about safety all the soulsearching for the causes of the toll mo tor cars take and the age old knowledge as to the failings nature we still grant people after the most super ficial of tests the to drive without inquiring as to the ability of the same per son to be responsible if as a result of driving a cat he or she causes damage to life and limb The fact is that all parties concerned in this deadly busi ness are guilty of some sort of hypocrisy and double talk There is no question here of in dividual liberty or state con trol The only question is that of protection and of admission of responsibility We do not advocate state control insurance compart nor of anything that smacks of red tape What we feel should be is to pro vide a simple condition which make the of a permit to drive a car dependent a showing that the man in question is capable of being responsible whether the accident was his fault or of making good any damage he does Schools carry insurance in order to protect children play ing games municipalities are protected if people fall on walks arid arenas are against injuries suffered by spectators under certain aire paying workmens and those who dc not come under one of the categories that can belong there can be- cover ed in various ways We cannot think of any ob jective more worthy of a con centrated drive on the part of community organizations or service clubs or Chambers of Commerce than a drive to make people conscious of the need to- acquire some sort of protection- We hear of cases of hardship of different de grees The careless driver or the driver whose attention was wandering caused damage or injury and even death and yet this man had horse power of more under the hood of his car was not able to trot ft the happened he simply washed his hands of it Yet day after day hundreds of new permits are handed out A permit of ten is given after a few point ers by a and this en titles the man to use the same where all other people travel- It all seems so elementary and we are frightened of the audacity and devilmaycare attitude of the man who feels that he is- good enough to keep out of trouble or who claims that he is not his brothers keeper This question is far removed the of it from farming ox from the top six inches Yet it is characteristic of an attitude of that so often crops up in other parts of our lives is based on the same as the selling of top soil stealing Christmas trees and shooting game out of season It is closely related to Vandalism and like shooting cows in a pasture breaking farm fences is a hangover from the of individual a disregard for the health happiness anil life of others- Blast Reduces London to Rubble Reduced to rubble the remains of an apartment building are inspected by members of department following explosion at London Ont Cause of the blast which killed Mrs Ellen Leslie 39 one of a young business women who tenanted the building I undetermined as yet- wrecking the 50vyear- old building the blast shook the downtown business district and a new car j-
