WHAT THEY ARE SAYING For A Real Restful Holiday Theres No Place Like Home On the morning of Thursday Sept we walked along Main St for the first time in two weeks We felt we had been away from it for months such is the effect of a short break in ones daily routine After an hour spent at the office we were acclimatized again to work The first man we met on our way to business was OUT- friend Duncan McDonald- He said he had missed hop ed we had had a good holiday We certainly have had a good holiday although we have not been far away from home It was rest we were seeking and as far as we are concerned know no better place than home to find it We never get tired of home There we can sit still talk read or rest as we choose But had some diversions chief among which was some good garden digging For real relax ation give us a day in the gar den with some digging and to be done At the end of the day one is physically tired and sleep comes easily We Visit The City Our vife and self decided to spend a day in the city a rare event with us Should go by car or bus Then the bright idea occurred to us that we should go by train For real rest and relaxation for one solid hour we can Commend the from Aurora to Toronto by There is neither hurry ppr bustle no traffic jams nothing to irritate the nervous system once you are aboard the fortable coach Only three joined the standard thru am train at Aurora self and an elderly pled lady who had to walk a considerable distance along the platform where the train finally halted Hardly had we taken seats when a courteous inspector asked for our tickets to find that these were dated for the previous Having bought then only five minutes earlier we as the inspector that thjey opposite the residence of planning board member Mr Stuart Mills received a vigorous- complaint from a Maple St resi dent who says that the approach to a fine street is being ruined by such depositing of bricks and mouldering dust Where are the Town Around The Corner From Mr Leslie Wilson our good nearby neighbor on Spruce St we received the following lines which should touch a fam iliar chord in many Hearts I Around the corner have a friend In this great city that ho end Yet days go by and weeks rush on And before know it a has gone And I never see my old friends face For life is a swift and terrible race He knows that Mm just well As in the days I rang his hell And he rung were then And now we busy tired men Tired of playing a foolish game from trying to make a name I say will call on Tim Just to show that Im thinking of comes and goes And the distance between us were fresh from the See Never mind he said theyve just forgotten to alter the dafi on ihe stamp What did it matter The en gineer in charge of the train had- gone so along the platform that the crippled lady if he had almost forgottem to stop at Aurora still maintain that for one hour of real rest and relaxation you cannot do better vol by from Aurora Toronto drills and Excavations Our and self like nothing better than walking which In these days of mechanical trans portation is a vanished But we did make the Journey on foot from the Station to St to find city appears to he in the throes of drills and excavations left St from time to time to find release noise hoping that when we returned to it by way of intersecting streets that the drills and exca vations would have felt behind But it riot so Al ways somewhere there devilish operations of the drills and little groups of mcr either digging or filling in i Despite all such distractions our wife declared that she had had an enjoyable day But it was not so good as the Jeter quiet of Vivien Forest or the glamor of the sun on Lake Sim Maple St Vandalism Some weeks ago we drew at tention to a brick pathway that had been made from the side walk on Maple fat adjoining St over the town boule vard to the roadway Red brick dust ami pieces of broken brick are finding a restingplace by the sidewalk The vandalism is States fiSovsand grows the miles Theres a telegram Tim died today And thats what we get and de serve in the end Around the corner a vanished friend Bay loiter visited the Mr those who asserted that council always had the last and final word in matters of dispute be- it planning hoard If we pass such and such a in regard to planning council can change it if it wishes these optimists used to say They likely did that when a landuse bylaw is passed by council approval by the department of planning arid and then duly registered is there to It is there to stay subject to recommendations from the planning board itself to the department of planning and development Council may be most anxious to amend planning legislation in the light of changing cir cumstances But unless the planning board is willing to concur with and place before the provincial department with its own recom mendations for desired changes nothing can be dpne It is this arbitrary of planning legisla tion that we have continued to oppose for several years It has always seemed to us that such as the municipal council should retain for itself the right to say what shall be done with available building land in the municipality But in handing over the power of veto to the Aurora planning board the Aurora town council forfeited its right to say what can be done with available land Two examples are before us at the present time which prove the point The proposed new Timbers subdivision can only materialize if the planning board concurs in recommending to tbe provincial department that land designated as industrial shall be changed for residential purposes and the proposed new subdi vision at the north end of the town may become possible if the area is changed from agricultural to residential and commercial Si In other words the council Is placed in the position of having to say to the planning board by your leave these things may be done Not the council only the planning board is the legal master of the existing situa tion SUCCESS A SYSTEM fa Somebody that the last country to become socialist would be Canada We cannot recall the rea sons given in support of that contention But there are many reasons to uphold it Chief among is the very high percentage of homeowning citizens We have no statistics but we would guess that per capita there are more homeowners in Canada to any other country of the world Private ownership socialist theory can never he reconciled Socialism has sprung out of bad indus trial conditions Communism sprung from even worse conditions where tyranny has been allied to im poverishment and destitution Such are the breeding grounds for anarchy and the success of theories mouthed by demagogues Private ownership is natural to human beings from the possession of a pocketknife to a There is great merit and satisfaction in the building up of a private business or the ownership of property or funds of a personal character That which is hard to come by the most treasured of possessions Those who dismiss these facts are not familiar with the basic elements of human nature We agree the proposition that Canada will be the last country to be socialized Wiry should it ex change a system of government which has made of it the best country in Ihe world today That system is twoparty representation and ha as Canada has proved is enough to provide a general standard of pros- perky and personal freedom that has not been equalled outside its borders l- ORIGIN OF LABOR DAY Labor Day which celebrated on Monday last originated from an organization which at this date is only an historical memory It was known as the Knights of tabor and was founded in in the year l8C9i It amassed a membership of half a million and its objectives were the improvement of economic and industrial conditions the of the especially of labor the ftuenee- of tfcb organic ion with its strik ingly permeated borders of tlft United States to Great EttjiopOi mm the ttou introducing In the life of the industrial American of ltil tBsgWfcQ flay the of Labor lbor hm become a pi wfiSfch classes of part It was first celebrated in the United States In the year anil three years later labor representa tives from all parts of Canada gat here I in Toronto to mark what has become an historical occasion A bill introduced by Sir John Thompson in parliament at Ottawa in established the first Monday in Sep tember as Labor Day in Canada THE WARNING VOICE SOMETHING THEY FORGET Time And Change Discard The Planning Board Maps it was pointed out by a member of council that the planning board would need a new map in view of the fact that an area of a proposed subdivision east of the railway tracks was being changed from an indus trial to a residential designation One of the strangest news stories ever to appear in a newspaper was published in the last issue of the Aurora Banner It concerned new plans for the ac quisition of the parcel of land which the town council by a vote of five to four recently refused to buy for use as a park Obviously written by the Murray and Councillors Corbett editor the article at point assures the reader that the ac quisition of the new park is a practical certainty At another point it proceeds to state that in the event of the property not be ing acquired by the town for a pork eventually it would be re turned to the vendor Jack Wood and the money paid to him tor it would be returned to those who hud put it up The article leads the reader to believe that the land is to be bought by subscription to pro vide protection for town future and then cancels out this gesture by stating that its purchase would again be brought before this or future town coun cil or if necessary decided by a plebiscite of alt taxpayers News From Next Door Next door to the frontpage columns where the amazing story is told is a small piece carrying the title Council Cleanup Need ed Board of Asserts In this piece the commanding figure of President Harry once more emerges upon the contro versial horizon must be a houseclean ing suggested President Harry and others others not named as failures of this years governing body and obstruction of progress were discussed The reason why there must be a housecleaning appears to be because five members of the town council infused to commit the taxpayers to further and voted against buying thy farm for The Deemed And who were the iivt council who voted against the purchase of the ten acres of faun land at the price of They I J Davis Davidson and Moffat Presumably President Harry and others have their eyes on the foregoing five who apparently are sche duled for a cleanup at the mu nicipal elections If only they had voted to buy the 10000 worth of farm land they would have been progressive council lors The five dissenters have been warned Theyd better vote for At present there are at least three planning board maps in existence There is the aerial map which suggests an old parchment dug up from an ruin It cost than SI but nobody takes notice it anymore For some time it Was relegated to the basement in the municipal offices Was and now hangs on a wall by the council chamber It would be easier to find answer in a wordscramble than the home in which you live In Aurora on the planning that date there historical or chronological reason why Au rora should hold ail Heme Week Almost alt mer chants opposed Of course we resize that that is going to prove a long period until the can indulge itself advertising spree forced the hpart New Park The first comment we heard on this project came from to next time it is put up to council or theyll find themselves at the bottom of the polls Theyd be still further down if they voted for The Queerest Story Headers have heard of the Finest Story Ever Told But the queerest story ever told should be patented by the Ban ner It seems that the board of trade and the agricultural soci ety will contribute half the price of the farm land purchase and the balance will be made up from subscriptions But those who are contributing the balance of the funds would get no interest on their money As the Banner states If and whon the property is taken over by the town they would receive their individual advances back- As for the land it would be held in trust One Thing Clear Out of all this confusion and conglomeration of Banner verbi age one point clear A small group of people are intent on forcing the new park on the people whether or not they want it They will not accept the ma jority decision of town council hi this and contingent matters we will have more to in our next issue taxpayer He condemned the- proposal and Ave put hut comments into editorial Aurora News Page- We have heard no ordinary member of say one in favor aerial map But it is a relic like the word dissolve the latter used to transform council into a committee of the whole Dissolve an aspirin in a glass of water and you produce a whit ish liquid Dissolve council into a committee of the whole and members emerge from the trans figuration looking as pink and as pert as hitherto Other Mans There a black a white drawing which on the council wall and that i the offi cial landuse map It will have to be replaced But there is an even more of ficial it is drawn ire variety of colors It is the map which awaits the passing of the zoning bylaw It too will have lobe changed or relegated to waste basket Besides these there is a large map Indicating lot numbers streets and homes And there arc engineers maps showing the loca tion of sewers etc Of maps there is no shortage Subject To Change The odd thing however is that there is no fixity in connection with planning board mans al though it is that very quality of fixity that the planning board in tended in connection with their maps of it though we- have heard planning board zoned off many the proposal was a this and that area as industrial foolish one An unusual word used at coun cil in connection with the pro ject seemed to us significant of so much that has happened The word was dickering After the owner of the property had re jected an offer from council to buy it Mr Lome Cousins said that there had been some dick ering between himself and Mr Woods and he felt sure that council could still acquire it quick action were taken But we heard about such quick action in the year when a member of council in that year urged the purchase of the land So far no purchase has been made Murray has we think answered most if not rflt of the questions concerning that project In regard Jo the foregoing pro jects which Aurora News lias opposed we believe we have expressed the mind of the ma jority of the of Aurora residential commercial and Col in to them major satisfaction i that is our WHO RUNS THIS TOWN Strong resentment has been expressed over a news story which appeared in last weeks Issue of the Aurora Banner in which It appears that a small town faction including the town solicitor Air Lome are intent on overthrow ing a recent decision by the town council not to purchase the acres of farm laud owned by Mr Jack Wood for the pur pose a park The price asked tor the laud Is In the light of these new circumstances in which a deci sion by the town council is being challenged we re view a number of factors in the civic life Aurora in an editorial entitled Who Kims This Town wccltft of Aurora News Page PROJECTS WEVE OPPOSED Events Justified The Standi Taken By Aurora News Page we have charged as an outside influ- opposing town projects it might serve a useful purpose if we look a brief look at the Of we dispute the initial contention thai Aurora News Pave is an outside influence and for the reasons I First of all we reside in been issued fori the that all concern- rota and maintain home here a family we buy nil that we need in Aurora and do not chase outside of its I Units unless something that we need is un obtainable in town We rent an office and pay taxes While it is true that Aurora News Page printed at Mew- market it is also true that the Aurora Banner the inside naper is printed take the Era and Express the travels beyond the limits of Us home town The Banner is not solely an Aurora news paper It sells where purchasers Can he found for it There is one great difference the Era and press and the Aurora Banner The of the and is at Iciest twice that of the Au rora Banner If that statement is doubled then the Aurora Ban ner can challenge it by publish ing its circulation Festival Que of the town projects which Aurora- News Page -op- the We say Iowa projects advised ly for the reason that received the hlessiofi of the council led the mayor of the town We thought the whole thing was a ridiculous project And how did ft turn out We think wo ore correct in stating that the only organization benefitted from It Aiirota Banner publish obtained a lot from chicken But of benefitted the town K that clues in Aurora to a proportion of the profits But where Having So that its claim toisupport based on semi- purposes ie finan cial benefits to dubs together wilh the official blessing it re ceived from the town council we maintained that a balance sheet should have been publish ed We are not aware that any such financial statement has In in its promotion were in the led with the single exception of the publishing comp any If this is not true then dis proof can he provided by the publishing a financial state- merit We thought at the time ami still think so that tin- broiler festival was a ridiculous under taking that made a circus of the town Old Homo Week We were opposed as a citizen and as a newspaper editor to the project of Old Home Week There was no historical or chronological reason put forward in support it- If an Old Home Week has no such basis then the only other argument re maining in support of it is con cerned with the promotion of business TO other words on Old Home Week is set In motion so that those who patronize it shall be in the interests of busi ness We no hesitation in that such a proceeding is unethical is not the general custom to invite ones friends to a reunion so that one can get the utmost out of their bill- folders We recall that so usually a man as Mr Don Glass was reported in the Ban ner ho in favor of an OKI Home Week for the reason that it would promote business Business has its claims Hut there is a limit to those chums on Old Home Week is not motivated by sentiment it has no right exist Any other tea- son reminds one of the old nurs ery rhyme Qmne into my par lor said the spider to the fly Suspended Animation That an Old Home Week is in a state of suspended ani mation is proved by the fact that a few months ago the town council voted towards stub an event if and when it takes place Invested that sum could ac cumulate a laic amount of interest between Ihis date end the year 1IW3
