PRO AND CON Saturday Night Early Closing Produces Variety Of Opinion When Councillor Moffat brought up the question of whether or not the meter time should be altered to accord with early Saturday night closing she was careful to point out that there were strong feelings for and against early closing Aurora News Page J SINCLAIR Editor Councillor Moffat was ex pressing no personal opinion on this question As chairman of feylaws she was merely drawing the attention tit council to a situation that existed and to ask for direction All the di rection she received was to have the matter thrown back Into the lap of the bylaws committee to obtain further information reluctance of council to make a decision can fee under stood for the question of early Saturday night dosing is a vex ed one as some of the view ex pressed by storekeepers prove and do their shopping in an easy way Now theyve got to watch the clock to make it on the dot like catching a train oclock closing seems a reason able hour for a Saturday night Changed Condition Conditions have changed in the last few years especially since the last war said another merchant There Is an all- round tendency for more and more leisure Whether ifs a good thing or not in the long run is a matter of opinion but here and we have to accept it Why should the storekeeper go on working at the old hours when a simple adjustment can give him a little leisure too For a long time now people have been making a practice of doing most of their shopping on Fri day nights so that many of them can get away on Saturdays Most people have a car and weekend gives them a chance to use it This merchant was most em phatic on the point of early Saturday closing Its a good and sensible thing and Im all for it Fourth Merchant This is or is supposed to be a free country said a fourth merchant contacted by Aurora News Page and each merchant OFFICE HALL AURORA TELEPHONE PA WHAT THEY ARE SAYING Picnickers At Park Mystery Of Cement Boards PAGE NINE THURSDAY THE TWENTYNINTH DAY OF JULY NINETEEN HUNDRED AND Said one merchant of long standing Early Saturday night closing is so good that would never want to go back to the old setup After the long hours put in during the week to two or three hours of leisure a Saturday night is good for both body and soul the question of loss of business he said We have lost no business that I am aware After all the public is reason able if you make it just what it is you want and they will fit their shopping hours in to any reasonable arrange ments Said another merchant We have been in business for a long time and dont want anybody coming around here telling me has a right to open and close his when I should close my store I have to meet the bills and the taxes and theyre not peanuts There was a kind of rush peti tion paper brought around for signatures but I told them they store as he thinks best But for ourselves we have always had a few country customers whove combined some shopping visit to the movies If we clos ed down at six oclock oh Sat urday nights wed lose their business and their goodwill and the last means a lot to life So I guess well carry on on time at night But for years the old lines and try and please people have made it a sort of our customers What other outing on Saturday nights to merchants do is not my wander along the main street I could take it away He went on I hope well never return to the bad old days when stores kept open until any PLANNING BOARD AFFAIRS DeputyReeve Suggests Ways Clean Manning Board Mess The following declaration of policy on planning board affairs was given to the Aurora town council at its last regular meeting by DeputyReeve D J Murray He expressed the hope that it would be considered calmly and in a noncontroversial spirit Reeve Cook how ever made a bitter attack on what he described as dis graceful publicity Editor ANP The united effort of the coun cil and the Planning Board of this town is not just useless it la worse than useless The united effort is a detriment Ever since the Planning Board has been formed they and coun cil have just not gotten any where Who At Fault If it is councils fault then It is time we woke up and really woke up and started to do something for the people of this town the people who have elected us If it is our fault then we must start right now and start clean ing up this Planning mess It may not be a pleasant to do but if it is our duty then lets do it and let the chips fall where they may If it is the fault of the Plan ning Board then it is time they woke up and did something for this town or else get out of the and let somebody in there that will do something It is easy enough to find fault with what others are or are not doing and you yourself do noth ing about it I am not just go ing to find fault and then not offer something in its place Suggestions I am offering the following suggestions and I am offering them in hopes of getting some relief for the people of the town of Aurora I am not doing It to be biased or as a grudge against any per son or any group of persons I just want to do something to help clean up the terrible plan ning mess in Aurora Against Planning Board If there is anything in jay law that is applicable to the repealing of the Official then lets get at it quick and repeal this stalemate and maybe we wilt be compatible to before we had a been a but AURORA Social News Dr Roland Young and Mrs Young are expected to arrive by air from Wales early next month on a visit to Dr Youngs father Mr George Young Maple St Mr and Mrs A Snow are on a vacation until August Councillor William Davidson and Mrs Davidson recently en joyed a motor trip as far as the Ottawa district on their vacation A post card from Dr Mulligan indicates that he and Mrs Mulli gan are having an enjoyable va cation at their country cottage in Nova Scotia Mr and Mrs Harris and family are taking a three winks vacation in the Parry Sound dis trict Mrs Willis after deputising for Mr G Fowler Mus at the Richmond Hilt United church will be at the organ of the Aurora United church for the following three Sundays Mi and Mrs Roy are away on vacation Mrs is a guest a Jasper Park Lodge celebrated in the heart of the 2 There has strong feeling in having a Planning way this town is now tieT stalemated the board feeling is very strong before we do anymore wasting of time on planning lis Aurora lets put it to the vote of the people and find out if the peo ple of Aurora do or do not want a Planning Board At the next municipal election lets put the Planning Board in the hands of the electors 3 If we are to have a Plan ning Board then let the council make it mandatory that the members of the Board have to be elected the same as you and I Elected Bodies The School Board tells you what they want done about their schools and to have the right to do so they must be elected by the people The Hydro Commission only have the right to tell you what you can and cannot do with your hydro because are elected by the people We the council tell the peo ple what monies we need and how we will spend it and we are only allowed to do this be cause the taxpayers themselves elect us So why should the Planning Board tell us where we can build and what lots we can build on if they are not elected by the people So if we must have Planning Boards lets them at the next municipal election the electors the same as you and I have to So in all fairness Mr Mayor with malice towards none I make these recommendations If possible repeal the Of ficial Plan Find out if the people do want a Planning Board If we must have a Plan ning Board then let the people themselves decide who its mem bers will be EDITORIALS DEPUTYREEVES DECLARATION The question of the authority of the Aurora plan ning board has become one of prime importance for the future of Aurora There is a strong feeling of hos tility towards it because of the restrictive measures for which it is responsible especially in its hindrance of subdivision development Such hindrance has been made painfully clear in the cases of Mrs Zimmerman and Mrs Trent DeputyReeve J Murray is now applying himself his manner benign He looked on his councillors as one who might be thinking you my children all What a nice bunch you all are even including our prodigal son the deputyreeve We could see no special reason for the mayors mood of charm He had nothing to say in praise Aurora Banner even when Mr Harold Graham held poster printing the town in the safety omissions mayors ihurrior until towards when Reeve some verba Sh table Point the became that his question of alteration of meter time in view of the early Satur day closing This evoked an in comment from the deputyreeve who said that since Aurora adopted early clos ing the stores In neighboring villages were experiencing a boom Groups of people will always shop on Saturday nights through long habit said Mr Murray A new signboard has been erected on St facing Maple which directs its read ers to the Park where as the notice states there are picnic tables tennis and bowling It will doubtless interest the chairman of the Parks board where such a good Job care- taking is being done at park to learn that some visitors were using one of the picnic tables last week With their cars parked nearby they were enjoy ing the amenities provided at what has now become Auroras new beauty spot Mr Harry Corner will be pleas ed to know that his efforts as mentioned above are being ap preciated Children At Play The Webster land having been sold equipment for the childrens playground has now been moved to the north portion of the Mc park immediately behind the tennis courts it is an ideal place for such a use and is being well what Mr Murray did say we are publishing his full notes on the subject We had a feeling that the deputyreeve was talking over the heads of his listeners He has given a great deal of time and thought and very calmly the reeve jumped up and worked himself into an emotional crescendo He ap peared to see red as he de nounced those who did too much kicking around He praised the men on the planning board who were doing fair service to the town and his voice rose almost to a shriek as he uttered the words dis graceful publicity The reeve in a glass house should not throw stones Has he forgotten town CHfl enjoys doing that kind of a chore in his leisure moments in the winter months Mystery Slabs Nearby there are two cement slabs wblch a number of spew la t ion was that they rev mains of a building which neither had or was about to be erected there years ago Quite accidentally the mystery was cleared up for us by Mrs Willis who has lived at her home on Spruce St for over forty years She told us that uncle the late Thomas tot- Slsmun Shoe fame donated the slabs and all the necessary equip ment for the game of shuffle- board or shovelboard for those who were not Interested in lawn bowling What has become of the equip- merit still remains a But the slabs are there In perfect condition Signs Unnecessary It is the opinion of a number way of bricks from the town sidewalk to the road with the re sult that it has ruined the appear ance of the green boulevard- Red brick dust is also being put into a bare spot beside the road pro viding a appearance We are rather at the patience of planning board ex pert Mr Mills in enduring this sort of vandalism near his prop erty We shall not however be further surprised if he pays a visit to council to protest such destruction of the appearance of a beautiful street A wellkept boulevard is a joy to the eye In Poor Taste They Shall Rise Up And Call Him Blessed Such was the title of the lead editorial in last weeks Aurora Banner praising the mayor of the town for his recom mendation of street signs They are beautiful words but used in the way they were it was not surprising to hear the com ment sacrilege At the least such words were used in poor taste The mayor must have felt embarrassed New Director Chairman of the recreation commission Mr J Buchanan called at our office last week bringing with Mm Mr Jack Rob inson the new recreation director arena manager ft was not Robinsons fault that Mr Wil liam did not get the ap pointment which we with many others thought was his due In these circumstances we wished Mr Robinson the best of luck and good fur tune in Aurora He gave us the impression of being a nice affable fellow who should make good at his job In Jijgnsequence of not being in too good shape since the bad fail we suffered on the broken sidewalk In April last wo cut down some of our activities including attend ance at the recreation commis sion meetings We assured Mr Buchanan however that we hoped shortly to return to com mission meetings Next month we are looking forward to a break in the form of a short vacation from Aurora News Page the date of which we will announce so that our read- will effect that the Horse Show would have to ceas or he ovfti municipality because of alleged at the town park Reported in at least one influential North York weekly The statement may have been reported by carrying news far and wide The Banner admitted that the tfi3i cultural society were not a such a statement so why publish it without the authority doing it has done a great disserI for undoubtedly the to an end in Aurora The Horse Show has been so past two or three years that the enough surplus funds on hand to be town council a grant of as much as towards the purchase of a new park For its recent successes names were mentioned to Aurora News Page as being mainly responsible namely those of Mr P retiring secretary and Mr George Pish treasurer It is usually- invidious to single out personalities from an organization where so many pull together with cooperative enthusiasm- But a director of the agricul tural society told this newspaper that if a poll of opinion were taken it would be readily agreed that outstanding work had been done for the success of the Show by Mr Jarvis and Mr Fish In spite of the gloomy forebodings of the Aurora Banner which may be suffering from a severe case of pique because of the decision of a majority of council not to buy the new park it seems certain that the Aurora Horse Show will flourish again in in the Aurora town park iWhat does the Choice stutp Mm iftO of tfifc as letter trustee of the sponsored by the smiled too Exhibited a copy of number of posters that are to be printed free and gratis by the Banner Such benevolence needs to at the wheel of his car and himself armed with paper and pencil he made a thorough survey of the streets of the town which he found bad ly marked His survey showed that from to signs were heeded to make the streets known We have no hesitation In say ing that the mayor made a thor ough report on a worthwhile job The absence of street signs has been a serious lack in Au rora Only a few days ago a puzzled visitor was asking for a certain street where he said his brother It has not been uncommon for Aurora citizens themselves to fail to locate cer tain streets The mayor did a good Job but it was some time before it occur red to anyone to commend him for the time given to it Final ly this was done by Reeve Cook But the meeting dragged on without a decision being arrived at on the installation the signs Finally also this was achieved and Aurora will be brought up to date with street Water of bylaws commit- tee Councillor Moffat raised the which we caught the still small voice of Councillor
