SPECIAL MEETING So Help Me Mrs Moffat Is Or Isnt There Yet another special meeting took place on Thurs day night May 20 to consider the Cousins propositions From several points of view it was one of the cagiest Meetings we have ever attended It was like trying to unravel the mysteries of a detective story lit first place we only Woods and himself and he was the special meeting sure that the land coiild be the said about it at the last Siting of council The mayor flS members of council to lt after the session sojourned There was some ttsjries of a tentative be considered we learned Tentative business can be anything But there was no of any special meeting Abater we learned along the of special in that had been called for we informed by Councillor Moffat it bad something to do wife the chicken plant so we to understand we walked along to the The editor of the Ban ner must also have heard of it l0nge grapevine or from some other source because he present Sewer Service notbie personalities were absent namely the mayor and reeve So it fell to the lot the ray to get hold of mayors gavel and control proceedings must say that Mr Murray not appear to be too happy In situation However he carried off the job of chairman with success Mr- Cousins came in im mediately The chairman asked him what he wanted council to to which Mr Cousins replied that he was wondering if council had anything to offer Thus began a meeting which fi nally became involved In several problems without in the end solving any one of them Curiously enough the words chicken plant were never used throughout the evening Mr Cousins asked for services prob ably for the purpose of a new subdivision The chairman said that the subdivides bylaw stipulated that all services must he installed hy the subdlvider to I which Mrs Moffat replied that that didnt apply to industry Mr Cousins said lie wasnt sure what would happen He wouldnt be in a definite position until about a week hence He nr iu a IMS case fiUSfcf installed Councillor Dunning Avenue He indicated he was prepared to pay for some a P services connecting Cousins Drive I New Park Wells and Dunning Avenue Mr Quite suddenly Mr Cousins Cousins agreeing to pay half turned to the acquisition of a costs of contingent services if park on the Woods proper- went through Ay Ho said he had discussed the j Mr Cousins left the meeting matter with Mr Woods and if after stating that he would be council acted quickly they could seeing the planning board and acquire acres for 10500 We after expressing the opinion that understand him to say that he he hoped soon to know just had on option with him which his future plans would be could be signed immediately The deputyreeve pointed Out Councillor said Mr to Mr Cousins that Woods had been made an offer subdivision would fee from council which he had re- provided in connection with The chairman supported trunk sewer and this but Mr Cousins said there not go ahead with the new had been what he described councils offer had been turn some dickering between Mr down SINCLAIR Editor OFFICE DOAN AURORA TELEPHONE PA bought Not much more was said on that subject and our impression was that it was dropped as too hot a potato to hold Water The decision suddenly turned to water supplies and Mr Cous ins was talking about the possi bility of residential development on a new subdivision This brought forth a remark from the chairman that the picture had changed from one of industrial to residential subdividing to which Mr- Cousins replied that he was not sure what might hap pen Councillor said they needed a new well as Aurora had been short of water for years This observation brought Mrs Moffat leaping into the debate with the remark So help me Have we water or havent we Some people say we havent enough water others say we have plenty I want to know just where we are Councillor Moffat then went on to say that two young gentle men had visited her and com plained of the bad publicity Au rora had received because it was said the town was short of water Councillor Davidson said couldnt throw water away to which someone said water wasnt- thrown away Mr Davidson said he thought the Cousins proposi tion would use up too much wa ter We cant guarantee a sup ply of water he said Plenty Down There At this stage Councillor Jones rose to address the chair and to clarify the water situation En gineers have assured us said Mr Jones that there is plenty of water down there But why draw it up just to run down the creek It would be foolish to dig new wells and bring up quantities of water that would only run down the creek Mr Jones went on to say that there was already a sufficiency of water for the normal needs of and for a small number of industries needing only nor mal water supplies He repeated Aurora Social Nem Mr Jay Cody was in town last week following his return from Florida and the taking up of his summer quarters at Big Chief Lodge Mr Cody met his the present situation would not have arisen The bitter evidence is that the board has discredited itself TEACHERS SALARIES There has been neither continuity nor equality in schedules of salaries as evidenced by events at the Aurora public school On March secretary to the board sent to the teachers informing them salary had been set for per in the letter indicated that there IF would that amount WHAT PRICE A DEGREE In some research we have made recently we noted that teachers possessing a degree could command much larger salaries than those who held certificates only Presumably the ownership of a degree is considered indicative of superior education and knowledge But fom experience we know that such is not the case We know of recent instances of the gaining of a degree at Toronto University by graduates who couldnt spell correctly the simplest English words We knew two English male teachers who never did succeed in winning certificates Both were clever men One of them was a linguist and was fluent at three or four European languages besides being a good Latin scholar The reason they hadnt certificates was because both of them became jittery at examinations But both were firstclass teachers Neither a degree nor a certificate will make either a man or a woman a good teacher Teaching is an art that is purely personal paying nedy The purine every year anctl was hougfijtj this year As a result several resignations were tendered Since the board have received resignations they have made changes in the schedule We had been instructed that Hie maximum was to be During the sched ule A new maximum of 3400 had been established The mini mum salary of 2200 had been raised to 2400 and the annual increments were raised from Three days later we were in formed that there was set maximum salary Further editorials on the school situation will bo found in this issue Make It A Meet Your Friends At The D HESS Drug Store Graduate Pharmacists St staff very friendly and coop erative My reason for leaving Aurora was because of differences with the school board regarding sal ary Our demands for an in crease in salary prior to my res- jgnation was merely what we considered to be necessary to meet the high cost of living We were refused the increase asked so I decided that it a had to look forward to a salary that would allow no more than a mere existence I would leave the profession After having taught five years my salary was only 1 recall that when a group of teachers school board to discuss salaries an au thorized procedure as authorized by the Teachers Federation that the chairman of the board during the interview remarked to an other member of the staff and myself that he would like to see us out digging ditches Mind you there is nothing be littling about digging ditches I have done it It was his impli cation that was biting I man aged to control my anger at such a ridiculous remark and have since thought what a childish and inconsiderate remark it was for a man of his age and position to make to a group of adults who had given him no reason to make such statement 1 know that was very sur prised that a person who would make such a statement should be given the opportunity of repre senting the citizens of Aurora I believe that I am only one teacher of several who has left Aurora public school because of poor salaries Although I am no longer teaching it is my firm conviction that school boards everywhere should be striving to do an ever better job of teaching thus benefitting everyone the children in particular Second Statement I believe there has been an unfair distribution of salary in creases and that the present maximum is not sufficiently high to induce teachers to stay on the P staff I greatly enjoyed working with the staff and with the prln- nojfc However the point that I am unable to understand The board were not will ing to pay teachers who have been on this staff at least years with good teaching reports at the rates outlined in this new salary schedule But they are willing to pay teachers that they know very little about at these new rates With such an unstable sal ary schedule the
