and listen to something you enjoy it comes to your mind how wonderful it is to have eyes and ears week I had two occasions to use these senses to advantage at tile Minstrel Show and at the demonstration of handcraft Ill write of the Minstrel Show this week and of Miss Spencers talk next week- On Friday evening when Elsie and I the other half of the family having the ar rived at the town hall my mind was half at home with the flu victim and half at the hall watching the seats fill up with people drawn by the timeless attraction of the Minstrel Show I wonder when the first minstrel show was staged Well have to write to the Old Philosopher Alex Fair and find out Dick Hilliard made a personable and efficient inter- bringing out his end mens jokes In good form and those end men Dei Denne Allah Read and lived well up to the established tradition that their jokes must really be funny without offending Jack and West excelled them selves as the unpredictable comedians who wandered hither and yon through the The soloists chorus and form the solid foun dation on which such an enter tainment rests We thought the chorus unusually good Marie Lyons and Gene McCaffrey had done a fine job Gene conducting had a touch of professionalism that was quite outstanding We were intrigued by the cos tumes and Evelyn and Kay Dyer deserve a note of thanks for the effect they obtained The silvery iri descence of the spots on the mens shirts was tremendously effective when the stage was darkened I thought one of the moat ef fective numbers was the ladies chorus rendition of Stephen Fos ter memories Stephen Foster and minstrel shows- are surely comrades I hud only one fault to find we could have disposed the music sheets Music is so much more real when no visible reminders meet the eye and also the singers can put so much more into their work But thats a mere detail and the la dies added much to the whole performance The male soloists did nobly They included old friends of other minstrel shows Murray Huntley Terry Dean Jimmy Walker and Charles Boyd and new ones like Ken Morton and Ernest McCaffrey I would like to speak of the banjo duet of Cecil Gibson and Alex One so often hears guitars but very seldom do we hear a banjo well there is nothing else which so lends itself to plantation melodies We would gladly have heard another num ber A minstrel show without ac companists would be a sad af fair but there was no such cal amity- last week Everyone knows or should know what we think of Mrs Blosdale as a pian ist and accompanist and as usual she lived up to her reputation She was assisted in the inter ludes by some accompaniments by Mr David Penney at the or gan Mr Penny did excellent work before the performance be gan- One innovation which pleased us was the hymn Bless This House which- with the excep tion of God Save the Queen con cluded the program The hymn left a feeling of quiet pleasure and wellbeing and brought to mind the cause for which the show was staged our hospital So from the opening curtain to the rollicking strains of Minstrel Days to the hush that followed Bless This House the show went forward smoothly and most successfully A
