September and there is little likelihood that it will be the board may decide not to reopen kindergarten classes until January We would have to hold up the kindergarten classes until Janu ary or use basement rooms said A Jackson su pervising principal of the public schools According to the public schools act the board is not ob ligated to have a kindergarten if there is a shortage of school accommodation r It seems that we will he re quired to use the two kindergar ten rooms for other grades until aero January said trustee John to teach full time for that period said Trustee Arthur Lloyd Mr Jackson said he did not know whether all the present supply teachers would or would not teach full time Then we should certainly consider the cancellation of the kindergarten classes until the first of the new year said Lloyd Reading from the schools act Mr Jackson said the board could easily postpone kindergarten un til January with a letter from the inspector showing that there was overcrowding in the schools Then we would have two more rooms while the new rooms are being constructed he said It would not be doing anyone an unnecessary injustice because the inspector could rule that the kindergarten be cancelled for the full year he added Trustee was in favor of hiring the extra teachers re quired in September rather than bringing them in cold in the middle of the school National Exhibition By George It has been brought to the at tention of your via telephone calls from several lo cal merchants that a canvasser Is making phone calls in town soliciting ads for a year hook At least two of our mer chant friends said the aforesaid has remarked yours truly has something to do with getting out the book or is spon soring it This statement is ab solutely false progress to raise funds for minor sports here which yours truly was connected with have read about it in the Era and Express and we would have had the courtesy to call on you and not try to do it via a telephone call Your scribe Is hot connected with any campaign to sell ads or solicit funds for any book or booklet Several other merch ants have phoned to say the can vasser hasnt used any names in connection with his campaign but has left the impression the funds collected will returned to Newmarket boys and girls via grants from the Ontario Soft ball association for equipment This is absolutely untrue if there was any campaign in There was some discussion as to whether or not the towns de benture debt is too high for new school debentures to be taken out The present debenture debt in Newmarket is over Allan Perks said that af ter the debenture debt of a mu nicipality reaches a certain per centage of the assessment debentures cannot be taken out He said he did not know the per centage but would investigate the matter Tlie hiring of extra teachers for additional classrooms was also discussed by the board may hire teachers in September or wait until the new wing is completed in January If the kindergarten classes arc postponed until January the board may hold off hiring extra teachers until January Maybe we woidd be just as well off to hire supply teachers from January to June provided our supply teachers would want Registrations For Public Schools Start rbW Registration of children for the opening of school next Septem ber will be held at the four New market public schools within the next few flays starting tomorrow the King George School may be a lack of ac commodation for all pupils at the opening of the school term in September said Mr Jackson The proposed building program may not be sufficiently advanced by that time Because of this there is a probability that Kin dergarten classes may not begin until the first of the year 1955 The school accommodation situ ation was discussed at a meeting of the school board last night and a report of the discussion ap pears elsewhere on this page The registration is for pupils j Davis Leather Co Shows 53 Operating J A Gairdner chairman and president states In the annual report Ex port markets continue to be plagued by a shortage of dollars and a discount of New York funds Increase in volume could only be effected at considerable price reductions However it is hoped that there will be some improvement In the export situa tion in coming year he said J AI J No doubt this is a province- wide campaign and in different districts the canvasser uses vari ous sports or sportsmens names in connection with his campaign It so happens that yours truly is district convener for the A playoffs and our name ap pears in the OASA bulletins and that probably explains how he obtained our name However as we have staled previously we are not connected with any campaign to raise funds for any softball book Some prominent merchants said they were told that already had been made by other citizens One merchant was told that a mother of one of boys who plays on one of the local baseball teams would col lect the contributions One Newmarket merchant had agreed to make a contribution and a clerk in his store had given the donation When he saw that the receipt did not give the name of a lotol organization he ran down Main Street and caught up with the young lady who was making the collections He demanded his money bock and after considerable discussion the money was returned BIRTHDAY Mrs Julia Newmar ket
