prosperous New Year We thank each who assisted in any way in making the best on record The funds obtained from our were earmarked for a special cause to assist those who are unable to assist themselves Such benevolent work Is a pleas ure especially at Christmas time Our next bingo will be held on Wednesday Jan Comrade A Evans is in hospital at the present time Ho is improving Comrade J is up and around again after a short ill ness The controversial subject of War Veterans allowances is no closer to settlement than it was when parliament opened In of failure to arrive at a decision the question Is still In progress School teachers Mr and Miss V also pupils were at their desks on Monday morning Christmas throws its radiance before and after the Holy Night itself and seems to draw the Christian world into the tender arms of the Babe of Bethlehem The other half of the family and I were too ill to be able to do much but we did have some things that even flu cannot rob one of I think of the Christmas Concert at our school- house where under the direction of Mr and Miss Wice we were given a real childrens Christmas concert in which all the children from the smallest to the biggest had a part and did it creditably There were choruses and reci tations and plays one telling of Christmas in many lands Be cause so many of the children were unknown to me I cannot with fairness mention those I do know who were outstanding but I must mention little inci dent which delighted me Miss Viola Johnston who had been accompanist vacated the piano bench in favor of a very small boy who looking compe tent and superbly indifferent to the audience seemingly awaited something Mrs asked if he were not going to play He said with the firmness worthy of a veteran I will play when the teacher tells me to That was exactly what he did and ho play ed with precision matching the singers in a truly professional manner We inquired his name and found it to be David I should say his age waa six Mr Doug acted as chairman making an excellent one humorous but not forgetting to remind his listeners that Christmas is Holy as well as be ing a holiday Then there were the Christmas services at Trinity United church the Sunday be fore Christmas which were a source of delight to all who hoard them Both the adult choir and the juniors under the expert conduct ing of B gave us Christinas music which was a de light One anthem in the morn ing by the adult choir Noel was one of the things that linger like fragrance in ones memory The solo by Anne Stephenson was sung beautifully and the under Mr Mrs wore iui recent tea with Mis Mo so exquisitely sustnlncd NicolH sinter nj family Mr and Jrt Ml Mr Fred Allen hardly breathed till It was over Then the childrens choir and their soloist gave us delight Their articulation and days lust week with Mr Ridleys sister and family at Burlington Mr and Mrs Roy Cody were guests of several friends in Tor onto over the New Year holiday Mrs Douglas McCluro and Roger spent two days last week With Mr and Mrs David Sharon Mr and Mrs M Sheridan were Sunday tea guests at the home of their son Doug Sheridan Newmarket Mr and Mrs Albert Ridley Helen and Alberto spent a few were so good and their tone so clear sweet and full that we could have listened to them far longer I must mention these soloists for we will hear more of them I know Richard Graham Ernest John and Lawrence Bob Jacques Carol Graham Jo Ann Wilson and Wilson In the evening there were car ols of many lands and again the children sung I wish to mention the other adult soloists here Ken Morton who sang a difficult solo with expression and power Mr Ken Stephens and Alma Stephens whose voices blended so delightfully a hope we hear them in duet form many times in the future Mr Aiken told a story of The Little Star That Got Lost With Hilda we attended Mid night Mass its brilliance and solemnity always seems to lead us to the stable in Bethlehem We live to see the little lad who carries the to the crib and feel that in after years that child will never forget that lovely bur den and will keep his hand clean and his heart pure On Wednesday night we turned all the lights out save those on the Christmas tree and the crib and settled down to enjoy The Messiah presented by the Men delssohn choir and the Toronto Philharmonic orchestra under Sir Ernest McMillans baton Ami what presentation it was Never I think did the chorus and orchestra show to such ad vantage while the soloists excell ed themselves Last year we felt the contralto was the weak mem ber of the solo team This year Margaret sang superb ly In O Thou That she sang with the joyousness that that great aria calls for and her tenderness in He Was Despised was just what wo love to hear Wo were delighted that the other three soloists we had heard on our concert series and we noticed that in the few months since we had hear them Lois Marshall Jan and James Mulligan had grown in musical stature Lids Marshalls exquisite purity of tone was re markable she had disappointed mo when she was here by a cer tain coldness but now there was warmth and tenderness Jan Vickers had gained in power and individuality and James Mulligan had lost a certain harshness When it was over we felt we had come buck from some heavenly country And now we have come to the New Year with Its clean pages its opportunities and its perils May we ait find strength to fol low tlie star of Bethlehem to the Christ Child Happy New Year everyone BWSTUDIO PHONE a j Lz t CLOTHES s A E BONDS BIG JANUARY BONUS TO YOU
