AWARD HOWARD Theres a jolly chap in our town whos been playing Santa Clans to the boys anil girls of Newmarket and for a month now The chap we refer to has been purchasing Ice time at Loth the Newmarket and Aurora arenas to allow the small tykes first second and third to have a skating period Our man Is our Newmarket- Aurora business man Howard Parents have said that Its truly wonder ful that or more kids have this opportunity to learn to skate and have skating fun at the arena Which some of them would miss if it were not for Mr Br tec Not only docs Howard purchase the ice time but along with his right hand mail Joe Peat goes out with the kids and teaches the boxskate brigade to skate Howard too is a great booster for minor hockey and last year his car was always at the beck and call of the Smoke Kings in their long outoftown jaunts on the road to a championship So this week its a tip of the hat to Howard for his interest in district boys and girls Hes our nominee for the award and Theatre pass Thank you Mr HASH By George Newmarket Sports Editor Two more shopping days be fore and Dancer bust in Whew where are those shoulder pads Even if there are prob lems about what to get Aunt for Christmas this is the best time of the year Its to see Christmas cards come in with Hub North York and sports writing pals inscribed thereon Your very kind wishes are recip rocated MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL Wonder if your can guess what our pals are ask ing for this Christmas we can hear Andy and Norm whistling a few bans of all we want for Christ mas is a two game streak a game streak We want a win over Unionville or well be up the creek Its quite an order Jets have been going smoothly of late Hoyever if the Bears can drag up their socks Santa might deal them a win tomorrow night in Pep glacial compound to keep them out of the basement It seems we can hear Herb Cain Fred Stan Smith and the Spitfire company asking for more home games Hope they get their wish and hursts get packed for their Euro pean junket Seems a crying shame Hub has one of its best and most colorful teams in years but with nobody so to speak to play against Town leaguers request via proxy Ray Smith Bill Ingram Mickey Smith Harry Lavender Bruce Hall Bob and John Lunau is short and sweet Give us more customers or well have to fold Everybody is hold ing his breath until the Town Regents and clash early in January That comes up Jan The two teams are racing neck and neck at the mo ment for the lead spot It could be a preview of the title scrap Whatever would the Hubs greatest hockey loop be asking for I think I can hear somebody a sponsor The squirt and eager packs got rolling last Saturday Because of Smoke Rings Top Aurora Tigers The fans will be talking about Saturdays Aurora Newmarket North York midget hockey league clash for quite a spell The two teams spun through minutes of lively action before the Gorman Smoke Rings claim ed a 54 victory over the Grant Winters coached Aurora Tigers It was the Smoke Rings eighth triumph and tightened their grip on first place in the league The Smoke Rings opened up a 31 lead over the first two rounds It was well they did because Aurora showed a lot of persistence in the final 20 min utes to the Smoke Rings 32 Bob Wilson led Frank Hot- Smoke Rings with a three goal bag Jack Cain and Bill Forhan bagged- the other Smoke Ring counters Lome Babcock came through with four passes Bill Forhan completed a busy afternoon with three as sists and Bradley Walker col lected one assist Barry Cook with pass supply help from Ron scored Au- first goal in the sec- period Danny Patrick who drew plaudits from the sidelines for his shifty rushes scored two third period goals for Aurora one unassisted and the other with Jack Brooks the pass supply man Cliff tip ped in a clearing pass for Au roras other third round tally Both netminders Tfl T NEWMARKET a Mon to SATURDAY ONLY CONTINUOUS MOM MATINEE SATURDAY WEDNESDAY V f STARRING v DERB iwKr IK- our peculiar way of trying to Ross Copuuan and Dave let sport look after itself in the Aurora cage turn- Hub our smallest hockey efforts are out on a limb Francis Hoi r fc found 120 boys for hockey school board appear interested this year in sponsoring the lea gue as in past years So Francis went out and organized the teams and two leagues Now the need is for financial backing to pay for ice time Wei hope the school board when it convenes after the New Year will reconsider its position Therell be or more very dis appointed young hockey lads if somebody doesnt come to the rescue Of course our very active sportsminded Optimist Clubbers headed by Lowell Waller Art More Jack Hamilton and Don Warner who do so much for boys sports must have one little plea for Santa Its a very simple request and you can help by showing an interest in the Fri day night and North York bantam league games This request believe is sup ported by a host of jockey men and its simple and to the point Will Santa please call on the and ask them to please quit neglecting rural Ontario in favor of the junior A and senior A teams Aurora wan ted to add two Aurora players to the roster in a bid to arouse the Aurora fans Interest The nixed the idea Aurora boys cant play with the Lamb- tons is a metropolitan area team Aurora Is outside the metro area cxcept in the case of junior Now isnt that some thing The Auror club NORTH YORK JUVENILE Newmarket Thornhill W 1 T Pts 2 IB Scores last week Dec Stouffville Future games Dec 22 New market at Dec at Nobleton Dec at Newmarket Stouff ville at Thornhill could certainly some support One wit at Thursdays Aurorn- clash remarked fans better not go over the boards to battle the players tonight theyre outnumbered And so they were there were 28 players fans three pressmen one or ganist two coaches two manag ers and one stickboy Now what could our baseball and football packs be asking for In brief theyd like to see the Fair Grounds fixed up and made into the Hubs summer sports center That would in volve the hardball diamond being fixed more lights installed for hardball and a soccer pitch laid out so that our newly organized foot and loo specialists could do some hoofing on a field of then- own It wouldnt take too much work and too many dollars to complete the Fair Grounds job Perhaps our 1954 council and we notice there are a good many sportsmen on it will make their mark on the sports history sheets by put ting legislation through to have this project completed Day Ul December 25 i V A i i 4- To PPLIANGES AUTOMOBILES CLEANERS CLOTHING to TO A TO o
