people who unfor tunately were ihsappointed in their search at newsagents The ironical explanation con cerning the unsold Era and Ex press copy was that it had got ten tangled up in a small heap of wocdered what sort of a human being it was who bad written it We gave him a piece of good advice namely to tear it up and forget all about it We told him that in our own case we always looked at the the results of the election are known What those results will be none can say at this hour One satisfactory fact is that the results will be decided by the electors them selves Whoever takes office for the next twelve months will do so by the will of a majority of the people Whoever is elected to office will get fair play from us We have never taken the course of suppressing or worse still misrepresenting the opinions of those with whom we were not in agreement It is the duty of reporters to present each case fairly and squarely in news columns That is honest reporting and we have always done our best to fulfil such a duty We have taken sides in the mayoral contest and whatever happens we shall not regret our decision which was based on the circumstances then existing The electors may not confirm our views In that case we shall accept their decision without question and carry on from there In a democracy the will of the majority of the people is paramount and minorities must honorably abide by it ACCLAMATIONS One very satisfactory fact is that there were elec tions in all the municipal offices except one namely that of the In regard to that office we have not heard one person begrudge Mr D J Mur ray his acclamation We never had any doubt that if he had been opposed he would have won his promo tion from the votes of the people For nearly two years Mr Murray has worked hard in the general interests of the people of Aurora and was deserving of the promotion that he realized without a fight There is no doubt at all that as the future deputy- reeve of this municipality he will give the people he serves alert and energetic representation and bring credit to his town Since we are writing some days in advance of the elections we are unable to comment further But this much can be said It is altogether satisfactory that so many contests took place for the remaining vacancies Unless there are very special circumstances to justify them acclamations are not in the public interest Ex cept for the one instance named Aurora has been free from them this year TRADES UNIONS The article we published some weeks ago on the very cordial relationships existing between workers and management at the Leather company appears to have given pleasure to a great many people some of whom were unaware of the facts given on behalf of the executive of the Local We were of course pleased to publish the Statement issued on behalf of the workers executive One vital part of the Statement is worth repeating It is as follows From the beginning both the manage ment and union membership evinced their desire to make the agreement work to the satisfaction of both parties and it did work well Management knew where it stood with its workers and in turn the members knew a new confidence and satisfaction in that they could now deal collectively with their management without fear of dis crimination It seems to us that the above quotation clearly indicates the value of trades union relations between management and workers Proof is provided of what can be achieved for the benefit of all concerned where there is the honest desire and will to bring it about Such good results have accrued from a sincere spirit of negotiation and not from the threat of strikes or fear of discrimination or dismissal Those who are familiar with the history of trades unions arc aware that they originated in European countries and in Britain more than a century ago and were the outcome of deep economic grievances that arose from conditions approximating to industrial slav ery- That such conditions have now fortunately been eliminated is evidence of the progress that has taken place in the just relationships between workers and managements ENEMIES OF FREEDOM The real enemies of freedom are those who would suppress free speech They use various means to achieve their ends Sometimes they are found in the ownerships of newspapers where freedom of opinion is curtailed in the interests of special groups who want to keep important facts from the knowledge of readers Fascists Nazis and Communists have always threat ened free speech and freedom of opinion Their com mon technique was to break up by violent demonstra tions peaceful assemblies of citizens gathered together to hear speeches and discussions If stamping of feet and catcalls did not achieve their ends they resorted to more aggressive methods Some of their still survive among peaceful people VOTES CAST IN AURORA MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS DEC FOR MAYOR Ward 2 Ward 3 Ward Bell King Rose considerable amount of taxpayers time and money has been spent on discussing it and dissecting it it has not been passed It is not too much to say that no group of intelligent and sensible men would pass the zoning bylaw in its present form Committee Of Adjustment It is claimed that a body known as a committee of adjustment could introduce amendments to planning board legislation If such were found necessary But when it is remembered that the plan ning board itself may constitute such a committee of adjustment unless and until such time as the council nominates members of such a committee it is obvious that such an advisory body may be prejudiced from the beginning Furthermore any such commit- tee of adjustment composed on the recommendations of council would be subject to the approval of the minister of planning and development It is clear that the council is faced with the responsible task of remedying as far as possible the situation created by the Auro ra planning board and taking care that further restrictions are not imposed on building and other developments in the municipal- fcfer ant to the MMttef at town Mat en Dm Aurora News fees to thai toy fan re- COUCH in Mr retain his seat as mayor in a threecornered contest Final election figures were not available from the municipal offices until midnight December the day of the election Polling closed at but no results were received by Aurora News Page until nearly p when figures came in from Ward to be closely followed by results from Wards and 5 Tribute is paid by this news paper to the returning officer the town clerk Mr George Wil kinson for his ready assistance and courtesy in telephoning figures to Aurora News Page at Hall up till nddnight as the returns became officially available Reduced Figures Although he polled over 100 votes less than those he received in December 1952 when the last municipal elections in Aurora were held the retiring mayor succeeded in shouldering his way to the head of the table in a threecornered struggle which revealed that a substantial ma jority of the electorate is op posed to his continuance in of fice as mayor In all the circumstances it is apparent that Mr Alex Bell did extremely well in a fight which conceivably would have gone in his favor but for the lastmin ute Intrusion of Councillor Dale King as a candidate for mayor Concerning the varied and strenuous efforts put forth by his supporters to keep Rose in office Aurora News Page will publish in its next issue a re markable letter sent out by one of the shareholders of the Au rora Banner new company setup and handed to Aurora News Page by a business man to whom it was sent High Voting Figures Reeve Cook won an easily- understandable victory over his two rivals for the reeveship and it is a matter of particular sat isfaction to this newspaper that several of the members of council whom it supported real ized unusually high voting figures For the hydro commission Mr Harvey Bell made a good show ing against a strong opponent Mr Rod Smith Elections for public school trustees were keen and on the figures received it would appear that former trustee Mr Keith Nisbet was edged out by Mr J Offord on a margin of two votes only SUBDIVISIONS STALLED 1954 Council Faced With lob Of Clearing Up Tangles The first objective aimed at in planning for the town of Aurora should be concerned with the future interests of the propertyowners and citizens as a whole and not for just a few Any plan which disregards such a basic objective will create difficulties and place hard ships on numerous propertyowners In the discussions that have taken place over the past three years in connection with the zon ing bylaw one major fact ap pears to have been entirely over looked That fact is that if and when it receives three readings by the town council and is then approved by the municipal board of Ontario no changes can be made in it unless they are en dorsed by what is known as a committee of adjustment and la- tor given approval by the minis ter of planning and development Experience has shown that where an official plan exists changes of a very minor charac ter only can be considered This the situation in regard to the Zimmerman and Slater subdivi sions where building is being held up because of the present failure of the town council to obtain amendments to the Official Plan passed in by the then Aurora town council Although all members of council signed their names to a motion for am endment approval has not so far been given by the department of planning and development Council Is It has been claimed that in any circumstances concerned with planning legislation passed by the town council the council can am end it Such a misunderstanding should no longer be possible in view of what has happened in connection with the Official Plan If council had the power to amend it building could al ready have taken place on the subdivisions referred to The fact is that council is pow erless in the matter and must ac cept whatever decision is arrived at by the minister of planning and development Council had the power to pass the Official Plan and did so Having done so all over its provisions has now passed from council Exactly the same situation would arise if the 1954 council were to give three readings to the zoning bylaw which has been AURORA BOOK MUSIC SHOPPE
