construction of a dyke deepening and landscaping around Fairy Lake south of Water St Newmarket has been recommended by a firm of con sulting engineers to the Upper Holland River Conservation Au thority recently The authority employed James Associates to make a survey of the lake and the report was submitted at a meet ing of the authority recently It was recommended that the lake be deepened and narrowed for feet upstream from the dam at Water St by construct ing a dyke and depositing ex cavated material behind it that stone riprap be placed to a depth of two feet for 1500 feet along both banks that the re claimed area be fine graded topsoiled fertilized and seeded also that trees and shrubs be shrubs Also the westerly bank Various restraining may be trimmed and stone ripjures may be not including landscaping is to settle out in one location conditions downstream from the dam as this structure will re main exactly as it exists Also while our proposal includes de creasing the width decision regarding line size shape and grade may only be arrived at after careful in vestigation and a field survey As a result we suggest that this matter can best be dealt with in another report relating spe cifically to this work Estimate of Costs Should the authority find that it is not prepared to complete the proposed works at one time they may be carried out in several stages of construction However it is usually found that the small er the quantities included in the tender the higher the unit pike anil therefore the higher the total cost of the overall project Also additional work will be necessary in finishing off each stage by completing the dyke so that it ties in with the existing bank On the other hand the work may be more readily fin anced if carried out in stages For estimating purposes we have arbitrarily divided the work AURORA SOCIAL NEWS Continued from Page recently Mrs Powell has been visiting Mrs Toronto The United church Womens society meeting square miles of the Holland River Watershed is tributary to Fairy Lake The Holland River courses its way through farm lands from its headwaters at Lake water level elevation to Lake Simcoe water level eleva tion There is a fall of some feet above Fairy Lake which represents a steep gradi ent for a river Therefore the runoff is rapid and great varia tions in flow result So far as we know there are no records of flow measure ments on the Holland River but the runoff from comparable watersheds in the area has been measured at times and from these records it is reasonable to assume that fJood flows in the Holland watershed may at times of spring freshets reach a maxi mum of to cfs per square mile of drainage area It is therefore probable that a flash flood might mean a flow for a short time of cfs A flow of this order would result in a head of four feet above the crest of the weir In all prob ability however maximum flows will rarely exceed one- half this figure or 2000 cfs and minimum flows in drought periods may be as low as 5 Over the years considerable soil and silt transported by the water during periods of high flow has been deposited in the lake which acts as a settling basin being six to eight times wider than the river upstream However these flood flows only occur occasionally and lengthy periods of low flow persist throughout the summer months during which time the growth of weeds in the silt flourishes Hence a considerable portion of the lake becomes overgrown and unsightly Discussion of the Problem This report deals primarily with the conservation and of Fairy Lake for a distance of feet upstream from the dam at Water St First of all then some attempt must be made to prevent the growth of weeds in this area To accomplish this the depth water in the lake should be increased and the silt removed from the bottom The flow through the lake should be con fined to a narrower thereby increasing the velocity and decreasing the possibility of transported material being de posited on the bottom A considerable portion of the excavated material will be water laden silt of a very un stable nature which if placed along the banks of the lake would only flow back into the excavated channel It will therefore be necessary to con struct a dyke of stable material behind which the excavated silt can be placed This dyke should be sufficiently wide across the top to accommodate machinery After careful consideration we have concluded that the exca vation can be carried out most advantageously by first con structing port of the dyke with suitable material brought in to the site Then a cable operated bucket can be used to drag the material to be excavated to a point where it will be picked up by a clam and cast behind the dyke which may be con tinued with suitable excavated material In tills way tho silt will be removed from bot- of tho lake and the chan nel narrowed all in one opera tlon ma ta fertilized and The ap
