COUNTRY WOMEN OP WORLD ITS A Womans Ion By the time this appears in print the trade fair be finished for another year and we will be holi daying in the highlands But at the time of writing the fair is still on and we wish that it were possible for us to visit it once again Before leaving on holidays there are so many extra things requiring our attention The last of the raspberries must be picked and canned- The beets must re ceive similar treatment But every woman who has prepared her familys belongings for a holi day is familiar with the list of tasks Because of thorn our of the trade fair has been more limited than would have wish ed It is indeed a womans world not that there isnt a great deal to interest the male members of the family Luxurious fur coals gleaming electrical appliances for the kit chen excitingly different home furnishings have a decided appeal for the distaff portion of their viewers We wondered how many husbands accompanying their wives on the tour of the attractive booths stood jingling the change in their pockets while they thought Might as well hold this money now I wont have it for long suspect that they didnt really mean such grumb ling comments as Our draperies are perfectly good Why need new ones or look lovely as you are dear You dont want any of those cosmet ics They were probably mak ing mental notes of what to buy for an anniversary or birthday present Dreamer With so much to see and so lit tle time in which to appreciate it we find it impossible to describe in detail Newmarkets fifth an trade fair Some features appealed to us more than others thought that the composite picture of the arena was a lovely one merchant and the other exhibitors had managed to set up individual booths were alike only in their attract iveness Their variety and orig inality appealed greatly The interludes of organ music the display of aits and crafts the gay huntings and the pedestal baskets of summer flowers spaced around the exhibits added to the audio and visual pleasure of the visilom As a lover of flowers and the past president of the Horticul tural society it would be impos sible for us to write this column without mention of the societys booth near the entrance to the arena Arranged to resemble a landscaped garden its green lawn flower border backed evergreens and its wishing well the booth was a credit to its plan ners llod Caldwell and his com mittee Ay we have said all the booths were excellent But there Is one difference between the societys booth and the others With the merchants the trade fair is a show window for their merchan dise and because it acquaints the people of North York with their services it is good business even when it means many hours of extra planning and labor Those who contribute their time to the societys project do so in the spirit of civic improve ment Mr Caldwell who is a past president of the Horticultur al society and the many others who helped him such as Ernest Winter cochairman considered hanging- baskets such as the city of Vic toria uses They would like to see a decorated Main St during the Christmas season lights strung back and across the road from Water St to the north ern end of the business section Christmas trees and evergreen boughs fastened to poles and spaced at intervals along the load But such ideas require money and they need extra hands to help with the work It is be cause of their public at titude that they volunteer their time for trade fair activities Most of the merchants are members of the society Through the cooperation of the society and the merchants under the chairmanship of first Gene Mc Caffrey for two years then Bert Morrison last year and Charles Boyd this year the fair has be come the biggest venture of the district To them all and
