Davidson Of Report Although with several members absent leaving barely enough to form a quorum a meeting of the Rec reation Commission held on Thursday night Aug 6 was occupied from pm until 1130 with a variety of problems One of the major subjects discussed was the Question from whom must the recreation director take instructions OFFICfc DOAN HALL AURORA S6J PAGE NINE THURSDAY THE THIRTEENTH DAY OF AUGUST NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYTHREE Mr Swindle informed the Commission that he had made an inspection of the playgrounds on July He he had been very favorably impressed with all of them except the Ave playground where no child ren were in attendance The recreation director stated that that day a supervisor was at home sick Theisecretarytreanurcr report ed that Mr Gordon Stout had donated and Mr Harri son for the purchase of sweaters for a baseball team Another had been subscribed from players themselves as re ported by Bill MundelL It was resolved to send the donors let of appreciation On the directors recommenda tion It was agreed to purchase crests for good behaviour on the playgrounds It was agreed to keep the playground operat ing until the end of August out of a good deal of controversy resulting from a Banner report concerning the duties of Bill assistant director the Commission heard a detailed statement of one weeks work as performed by the assistant It indicated duties and engagements that covered a hour day in a sixday week After appreciation had been ex- pressed Mr Swindle was moving motion that the report be adopted when Council lor William Davidson said that he could not vote for the adop tion of such a motion The re port sounds like slavery to me exclaimed Mr Davidson adding that they had no right to ex pect any man to work such hours Mr Swindle said that Bill loved his work Who we he asked to try and stop a man from doing work that he likes Hes not forced to do It add ed the chairman but he likes doing It If he feels hes doing too much hes only got to come here and tell us so Mr Davidson protested that too much was being expected of the assistant and that he had no time loft for himself In the end report was approved Recommendation Not Made Mr Buchanan said that Mr and himself had tended a meeting the council presided over by IttyReeve Murray to consider whose it was to look after the grasscutting on the playgrounds Mr fold It was agreed that lite Parks Board recommended to take such duties and the deputy- reeve was to bring such recomm endation before council Councillor Davidson said that the story as he heard it at council Mr Davidson said the deputy- reeve had recommended that the town foreman Mr take the work over When Mr Buchanan expressed surprise that the recommenda tion made at the meeting had not been put forward by the deputy- reeve Councillor Jones said the Parks Board had never been mentioned in the deputyreeves remarks Mr Jones said the matter was brought up near the close of the council meeting and quickly disposed of Mr Buchanan said there were other matters the deputyreeve as chairman of the property com mittee appeared to have forgot ten He said that benches for park and storage of playground equipment at the old public school were other out standing matters It was re solved to make contact with the En an effort to get outstanding matters disposed of Duties Mr Buchanan brought up the controversial matter of the directors duties and from whom he was expected to take orders In the matter of Commission act ivities In the absence of Mr Don Glass he said he had a let ter from him for the considers tlon of the members present Basic recommendations con tained in the Glass letter were that the director should take orders only from the chairman of the Commission and the assist ant should receive orders from the director Mr Buchanan suggested that the director should take orders a member appointed by the Commission that a list of act ivities and a a daily record should ho kept He further sug gested that reports should bo furnished the director and his assistant at Commission meet ings A long discussion ensued In the course of which Councillor Jones said it appeared to bo necessary that the director should he pro tected from laving lake orders from When the discussion had pro- grossed for a considerable lime Ml Swindle reminded members that all matters covering the dudes of the director were con- mined In the Reference Manual of the Aurora Recreation Com mission It was agreed to abide by the Manual In the future Comment on the foregoing proceedings and the Mundell re- lMrt will be made In next weeks of Aurora News Page TOWN NOTES Quiet Election In Aurora PrizeWinners At Legion There was very little visible election stir in Aurora but plenty of canvassing literature found its why into doorways besides that received the mail One piece of literature was the Gathers Chronicle and another was a letter signed by three members of the town council I The fault with much such III is it is so bulky hat It discourages Hie reading of it That fault did not occur with the letter sent out under the names of three members of council DeputyHoove Murray Clarence Davis and Dale King It contained only three para graph a all id them to the point from the writers point of view presume I lie was an Offset to the expressed by Cook and Councillor Moffat In the Cut bora officer and always live wire A sheet entitled Who Wants To a Big Shot lists the names of nine American financial coons nil of whom came to un fortunate ends The comment tends All of these men learn ed well the art of making money but not tine of them learned how to live The basis of Rot my Is to teach Its adherents how to live useful life I We have received through the mall a very interesting circular the Aurora notary club presumably from Hoffman who Is the clubs public relations J rV WILLIS Drug Stow tow Found lira Most tin fori the bud weather on disrupted legion Carnival in the town park It was generally agreed that the entertainment put on was the best ever Alec Fort leu Tyler St won the largo bicycle while tricycle was won by Hobble Welch Victoria St The prize was won by lucky ticket holder No It Is worth and can bo claimed on presentation of ticket at the field Shoe Aur ora Among the entertainer were Dorothy dancer Juggler EDITORIALS SHIRKING THE ISSUE Almost at the close of last council meeting Deputy- Reeve Murray brought up the question of the ing of the parks and playgrounds But he shirked the issue of placing the responsibility where it logically rests Instead of making a recommendation that for the future the Parks Board should do its plain duty he started out to talk about the town foreman Jim It seems that Mr Goulding hasnt enough to do At least that is the deduction we made from the deputys observations Besides the work of grass cutting he gave a little rambling lecture on weeds and the town foremans responsibility for their elimination We saw Mr and some town employees engaged on weed destruction on Maple street not long ago If they werent destroying weeds they certainly werent play ing ping pong The responsibility for the care of the parks and fa playgrounds is quite obviously on the Parks Board We can imagine however that it would be easier for the deputy to beat up Jim Goulding than chairman Harry Corner or George Baldwin who we believe is vice- chairman But there should be fair play The Parks Board has been allotted and one mans services paid by the town If it cant look after grass cutting on that money it should fold up Why didnt the deputy- reeve face the facts JUST PLAIN STUPIDl The miniature sidewalk from the Aurora Automo tive to the driveway adjacent to Snow and Bests was narrow enough for the accommodation of one person of average dimensions Had good judgment been used the retaining wall could easily have been pushed back about another foot Sidewalk space would then have been available for a normal pathway for pedestrians Why this was not done is beyond comprehension But as though the sidewalk was not narrow enough some authority has placed five meter poles there immediately in front of private property This sort of thing Is just plain stupid This plague of meter poles has now ex tended to the east side of again in front of pri vate homes from Hudsons near to Catherine Meters on Main street have served a useful purpose it is claimed But to stick them around where they are an eyesore and a possible dangerous nuisance is we repeat just plain stupid WATCH YOUR STEP Yes watch your step at the Bank of Montreal en trance from the Main street sidewalk Two women have fallen at that spot where the mv paving has been made In the interests of safety this piece of bad engin eering should he remedied We have heard many com plaints about It already What sort of a trap will it be in wintertime Until such time as the remedy is effect ed there should be a Danger sign up Adverse discussion took place on layout in front of the Aurora dairy premises The platform should not he used for the parking of cars which is already taking place And the sloping edge on the adjoining sidewalk on Centre street to the road should be raised It is a tricky patch now What will it be when ice forms there It will be just too had if recent improvements result in Injuries or fatalities CARE OF BOULEVARDS By and large homeowners in Aurora tire fussy over their boulevards and keep them in good shape This goes ton for the ureal majority of Ihe lawns Hero and there one may sou lawns ami boulevards in which little or internal Is shown ami lliesu comprise blots on tins landscape A wellkept lawn and boulevard attrac tion to any residence The bit of exertion In keeping I horn so is very rewarding Personally we find grasscutting a relaxation If the mower is sharp and the grass is kept short grass- cutting is an easy chore Trimming a lawn is good for the temper It induces rofleetivo moods in which one can think both of the past and the present Besides theres the exercise Wo must have walked miles this year behind the lawn mower and feeling all the bettor for It WILFUL DESTRUCTION i It happens every time official and procla mations are put up on the poles for the guidance of citizens There was an official list of voters hung up on a at Maple on Yonge Wo wondered how long it would survive Intact It didnt hang thero Ion In about a week it had been torn from Its slender mooring and pages of voters were being carried along the highway by the wind Of course there are penalties for destruction of official documents But just tell that to the little fellow with mischievous hands and see what reaction you get If a hard hand were applied to that part of hta anatomy which Is most susceptible to argument the leuon might be learned And perhaps not Ha might retaliate by making a raid on poles further afield Growing up we suppoee the answer Or it COUNCIL SIDELIGHTS Mm r Hand Became CrackerBarrel The deputyreeve is always a man of peace ex cept where Aurora News Page is concerned At the engineering inquest which was held on Tuesday night August he opened the proceedings on a soft key The chairman of the Streets Committee Councillor Clarence Davis was not in attendance so the deputy officiated for him If one may so describe it it was a shapeless meeting The mayor is losing touch in the handling of his council It may be that he is losing interest in it We dont know What we do know Is that the businesslike procedure which he practised during and the early part of has disappeared It used to give us pleasure to write of the expeditious way in which business was handled from the head of the table Then there were no little parties talking among themselves Now the mayor himself has fallen into the habit of holding little conversa tions on the aide While the en gineer Mr B was speaking to council the mayor held a teteatete with the depu tyreeve The engineer stopped talking and waited until the pri vate conversation had ended On several occasions at the last meeting business got out of hand while members chatted between themselves This is permissible at a teaparty or an old ladies gossip but it certainly doesnt look good at an ordinary meeting of council which is public busi ness It may be that the mayor is tiring of municipal responsi bility now that the centennial fe- ft- WEST tee Adults Children under 12 with r r When the police report was read the mayor left the meeting in the hands of Reeve Cook and immediately there was another flareup between himself and Mr Davidson who was back again on the subject of strict observance of bylaws Unless youve got a resolution we must get on to other business said the reeve which left the tough Bill David son holding bag for a time CrackerBarrel In minutes the mayor was back again in the knocking the ashes out of his pipe and fill ing up again He looked refresh ed and eager for a new session From 11 oclock until the session ended at midnight it was a sort of crackerbarrel with business and personal matters getting jumbled together There was talk of the bylaw What had happened to it What was to be done with The mayor said if anybody had asked him on the street about it he would have replied that it was a dead duck Mr King didnt think so Something should be done about it Meanwhile the costly aerial map sits like a discarded parch ment by a wall In the council chamber with its back and not for Friendly Service Shop At JOHN MORNINGS STORE at t Agent For and the broiler festival have to be gazed on The passed into history For the time I official plan hangs on being we know of no Big Event to come unless it is Nomination Night and that Is some distance away The Inquest At nine oclock the engineer Mr Redfern his assis tant Mr two of the principals at the engineering Inquest came into the council chamber ami the show was on They were present to answer questions and we are bound to say that they did not display themselves to any disadvantage Both were exceedingly concilia tory It is always a safe line to take conciliation But the fads remain Coun cillor King said some of the side walks are of various shapes and sizes And very tricky too There is a very tricky slant at the Bank of Montreal Already wo have hoard of two well- known Aurora ladies having fal len at this point where there is a more or less concealed let down Unless Its altered it will he a dangerous spot when ice forms there Councillor Davidson described the layout at the Aurora dairy as an awful looking sight There is slope from the Centre street sidewalk on to the road which is going to prove hazard ous when the snow flies and forms Mrs Moffat spoke of rough curl- chipped and broken surfaces he would get Mr to come along and Inspect them Lack Of Planning Councillor J Murray said the explanation of what he al leged to he faulty work was the lack of preparatory planning In effect he charged that much of the work had been done In piece meal fashion Moreover he said thai the work should have been undertaken earlier The talk drifted along until the reservoir problem came Into fo cus Then the engineer said that there was plenty of water but the methods in use were outmoded He said thoy needed bigger pump and a larger pipe Coun cillor Jones said pressure wasnt satisfactory and many citizens didnt have an adequate water supply There was a deal of talk on this and that and the other and finally inquest was over One wondered how much had boon achieved by all this talking to and fro The doputy- wound up the by that all troubles and complaint would be forgotten once work wai completed Wait till the winter comes and people grope for on the slippery slopes mayor a lengthy po lice report in which reference wan made to dog control nil the year round a sudden Councillor Mof fat and Councillor Davidson on dog control How would you like to be tied up for a whole year Mr We the wall but its functions have been declared dead Asleep In Bed Perhaps at that hour town foreman Jim Colliding was fast asleep hi bed dreaming the dreams of the just But he came in for discussion He was dele gated to see that the grass was cut and the weeds kept down Were beginning to feel sorry fori Jim He was deputed to supervise the condition of the town park washrooms the town I hall other properties Now he must supervise the cutting of the grass and the weeds Is there anything else he must do Such a superman might take on community baking regulate the street traffic direct the police anil run the arena A tear for poor Jim As far as we know he never did collect the for sanding the streets in the early hours when the Ice was on the ground last winter
