Newmarket Horticultural Society wishes to extend a cordial Invitation to all residents of Newmarket and District to attend the fourth annual Trade Fair August As in past years the Trade Fair will be held in the Newmarket Mem orial Arena At the same time the flower show will be held across the street from the arena in the basement of Pollocks Shoe store w This years theme The Show Window of York County will be carried out by the Trade Fair committee As in previous years the Trade Fair is open to the public and no admission fee is charged The Newmarket Horticultural Society is proud to offer Norma Meyer wife of the form er editor of the Era and Express who was certain that it would meet with success Each mer chant and exhibitor was left to arrange his own display Eugene McCaffrey was chair man of the special trade fair committee which was set up fol lowing that venture To it merchants elected representa tives and the Horticultural soc iety sent members Mr McCaf frey engineered the negotiations for the first trade fair to be held in the arena and retained the chairmanship for the second term In the chairman was Robert Morrison and this year Charles Boyd holds that office trade fair was planned as a nonprofit project It has con tinued under this policy with the exhibitors paying for their space and the budget planned so that the fair pays Its own way At the beginning of the Trade Fair In 1950 the first one to be held In the Arena Eugene Mc Caffrey said We expect this to be one of the most successful events ever held In Newmarket The merchants are cooperating Those words are echoed by this years chair man Boyd who says that The 53 fair is bigger and better than ever We feel certain that the visitors to the arena will come away enthusiastic about what they have seen Childrens Art A Feature At Hort Show This years summer show of the Newmarket Horticultural so ciety will include an interesting art exhibit The work to be displayed was done by the pupils of grades to of the Newmar ket public schools Sponsored by the society un der the direction of the juvenile committee chairman Bliss Eva Barnes an art contest was held in each classroom during regular school hours Each teacher judged the work of her own pu pils and two prizes were awarded by the society in each classroom These prizewinners will have the honor of having their pictures exhibited at the societys summer show on Saturday August The show is being held as usual in conjunction with the trade fair and entrance to the exhibi tion rooms in the basement of Pollocks Shoe store is from Cedar St directly opposite the Arena door On Last Day Of Fair The annual summer show of the Newmarket Horti cultural society will be held on Saturday August 15 in the basement of Pollocks Shoe store The show will be held in conjunction with the fifth annual Trade Fair Entrance to the flower and vegetable displays is from Cedar St opposite the Arena door The show will be set up on Friday evening August with all entries being made by oclock and togged by pm Members of the Horticultural so ciety are eligible to exhibit bloom and vegetables in this show which includes many classi fications for both veteran grower and beginner There ore about classes for gladioli In the beginners sec tion there are an additional eight classes for glads Includ ed in the show are asters dah lias petunias single and double sweet William phlox annual and perennial salvia scabiosa snapdragon verbena zinnia large and pompom larkspur cosmos marigolds French and African calendulas and coleus There are classes for the vegetable growers Other inter esting groups include centre piece arrangement miniature bouquet corsage display of cut flowers annual and perennial open to all and decorated basket of gladioli quality and variety to count There arc two classes for school children One group is best display of cut flowers an nual and perennial open to school children who have never shown in this class before flow ers to be in one or more con tainers The second is a class for best vase of wild flowers open to school children only ar rangement to count not over IB high Show committee chairmen are Rod Caldwell and Ernest Winter New exhibitors can obtain addi tional information from either of these men members the show committee will be on hand to assist in the setting up of the show on Friday evening All flower encourage the beginner to attempt newer varie ties They interest the public in horticulture and they help to maintain a high standard of floral beauty in the community EXPECT TRADE PAIR VISITORS EXCEED What will the attendance be at Newmarkets Trade Fair in 1953 Exhibitors expect that it will pass the mark Last year there were close to 15000 present In and in the estimated attendance was set
