It has been remarked that the present election one of the quietest on record At least that is so in the North York riding An authority in these matters said to us that the Liberals should take this quiet state of affairs as a good omen When people are dissatis fied he they soon make a noise We leave such political subjectmatter that it would be to the experts As our invidious on our part to single readers know we have never in in political discussions in our writings We think the busi ness of a writer for a weekly newspaper is to record the news objectively whether political or otherwise In Aurora we have friends and supporters in both major political parties None of thena need any direction from us and to offer it would be an im pertinence As proof of our efforts at any one speech for special mention One of these ladies did we be lieve bring blushes to the face of the candidate Mr Jack Smith when he heard himself described as cur goodlooking candidate then going on to say that he had served the riding well and had given it good service for the past eight years Being a very mod est man Mr Smith may have been a little disconcerted at the j- mm Aurora Social News i- reporting we may point to reference to in the fact that we gave as much space and prominence in head the presence of so many ladies However Mrs Smith who was lines to the Conservative appreciated the tkm held at the High school to her husbands as we did later to the Liberal convention It is business to provide objective news for readers of all shades of opinion Gray stones Meeting We attended the Aurora Liberal Womens Association meeting held at the restaurant on Monday July for reasons First we wanted news and second we were curious to learn how women conducted their meetings We have to say right here that business was carried through without a hitch It was the first womans political meet ing we have attended in our life- The Candidate Mr Smiths address which he gave in an easy informal man ner was entirely free from per sonalities Apart from his tri butes to the prime minister Mr St Laurent and the secretary for external affairs the Hon Lester Pearson an old Aurora boy he introduced no outside names He did of course pay tribute to Mrs Webster and to the ladies who were present to support i s candidature He took time out also to thank Mr and Mrs Hugh for We are sure Mrs Charles the Graystones at the Webster will not be annoyed with of the meeting It is not our pleasure to know us if we remark that she is not now as young as she once was But as president of the Aurora Liberal Womens Association she did a fine job at the meeting When it is recalled that Mrs Web ster was active politics when Mackenzie King became the first minister of labor in the Canadian government and has occupied her present presidential office a period covering some years it will be understood that she is entitled to the honorable designation of veteran But Mrs Webster revealed no signs of the passing of the years when she addressed the meeting She spoke briefly and charming ly and gave a tempo to the gath ering which was sustained to the end The ladies who spoke after her made excellent addresses all of jo varied in character and V- BOOK MUSIC Stationery Greeting Cud etc Agent For Era Clawified Ada Mr Smiths opponent Mr Gath ers But we do know Jack Smith and his family very well He has three lovely daughters whom we first knew when they were school girls One of them is now the wife of the editor of the Richmond Hill Liberal which Mr Smith has published for nigh on years their Smith family is a very happy and ideal one For Personal DRUG STORE at Era and Express classified V CONDITIONS TECHNICOLOR Zm SWORDS Wilde Toes Wed TECHNICOLOR Granger 99 PRICKS ONLY Those who know Jack Smith know him as a modest but shrewd and practical man His eight years In parliament as the member for North York have given him a wide and intimate knowledge of the people he rep resents He was described in Au rora by the Hon Lester Pearson as a man who is respected at Ot tawa for his deeds rather than his words From our own know ledge Jack Smith has rendered many private services which he would never permit to get into print Besides his active political life he is a Freemason of long standing and a charter member of the Richmond Hill Lions club An Aurora friend of ours and a strong Conservative remark ed to us some time back that it was Jack Smith and not the Liberal party they had to beat Hes such a popular fellow ha said that almost take on a cabinet minister rather than him if I were If figure are any criterion then our friends calculations are based on solid proof For In the election Jack Smiths majority was while at last election this majority was increased to Such an in crease of popularity in the apace of a few years proves Mr Smith to be a formidable if kindly poli tical opponent for any man to take on be he cabinet minister or private citizen This could well be the why the contest in North York is proving such a quiet affair fleas Drug Store During the past week the Hess Drug Store has been closed for vacations but it will reopen on Saturday August Mr D Hess Tree Stomps We have had a few hands for our recent editorial on the num erous tree stumps which disfigure streets in Aurora One citizen on Catherine Ave told us he hadnt seen the out yet with pick and shovel Neither have we HAU AURORA TELEPHONE PAGE ELEVEN THURSDAY THE SIXTH DAY OF AUGUST NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE PICTURE CANVASS In election periods such as the present many strata gems are employed to capture votes- One of these methods is picture pressure in newspapers We are aware of course of the old Chinese proverb which as serts that one picture is worth a thousand words But the old proverb did not say that there should be a plague of pictures One can see so many pictures of a political candidate that the sight of the same face turns into something like a daytime nightmare Some political candidates have unwelcome faces and they are better out of the picture A goodlooking fellow who has a nicelooking wife and perhaps a family can add to his political attractions by a newspaper photograph But if the picture recurs re peatedly it loses its appeal The best sort of picture is a good record of past service The fortunate candi date who has that sort of picture need not bother too much about the one that comes from the camera We recall a candidate for high office who appeared to have been photographed in every kind of posture except getting into bed He was seen with various kinds of cattle in which we believe a goat was included kiss ing juveniles seemed a constant pastime and he was always grinning The poor man was eventually drowned at the ballot boxes in a deluge of his own pic tures The public has a long memory They dont easily forget the man who has given them quiet but effective service over the years A SHOCKING AFFAIR The people of Aurora were deeply disturbed and shocked when the news got abroad that an elderly lady had been attacked and her purse snatched from her on the evening of Monday July 27 Chief Constable Dun ham informed Aurora News Page that this was the first occurrence of its kind in Aurora within his memory and he was deeply indignant that such a thing could happen in this quiet town of generally model behavior Once again great credit is due to the police force of Aurora whose excellent past services in the mainten ance of order are well known Within minutes of the outrageous attack the police were scouring the town and their efforts succeeded in bringing the guilty person to book Combined with a feeling of relief that the culprit was quickly apprehended will be deep sympathy for the families involved Crime can bring terrible punishment to the innocent A PRACTICAL SOLUTION On the question of the operations of the Recreation Commission it has been repeatedly suggested that it would be good business if the Commission included the Arena Board We have supported that view because we think two organizations serving similar purposes are unnecessary All the activities at the arena come un der the description of recreation If the work of super vision were coordinated two good results would happen As we understand it larger government grants would be available if all recreational activities were co ordinated under the direction of the Recreation Com- mission That is a sound business reason for the sug gested absorption of arena activities by the Commission The more funds that are available the better the facili ties The second good result would be a more efficient recreational schedule and much saving of time and work UNPAID SERVICE Looking from our office window the other day we saw Councillor Clarence Davis conferring with members of the engineering staff where work was going on on Main Street Half an hour later he was still around Mr Davis is chairman of the Streets and he was taking time off from his own business to look after the interests of the town He will receive no payment for the time thus given to the town His only reward will be the honor of being a town councillor It is right that a local newspaper should take a critical attitude on local questions where the circum stances appear to justify such a course It is also right that praise should be given where praise is due Men who accept public responsibility often do bo at their own personal loss and they are deserving of thanks for their services Mr Davis has been among our severest critics We bear him no grudge We think he has been doing the best he knows for the town in which he was born A PINE EXAMPLE We wonder if many people in Aurora take a look at the Collis Leather park It Is really entitled to the name park because of the care that is taken to beautify the surroundings of the redbrick edifice which houses a ma jor number of those who make a good living here The other Sunday we took a walk in that vicinity and what we saw was very pleasing and in our opinion deserves mention we are giving it now We recall the beautiful background of trees and shrubs the trim lawns and masses of beautiful flowers One might have been looking at the grounds surround ing a lordly castle instead there was the Leather sign on the front of the buildings Wo have known many prosperous factories with surroundings that were neglected and forbidding in appearance So heres a hand to Col Us Leather for its fine example in town Take look at the Tyler St park one of these days GLAD TO GET AWAY Of Centre Island Found Filthy Many years have passed since we last visited To rontos famous resort the Islands A couple of weeks ago we spent two or three hours at Centre Island to renew old associations We looked forward to this return to old scenes with pleasure we look back on our visit with regret To begin with we were some- His harangue was related to us appalled at the condition of an excellent Canadian trans lator The tearoom looked as neat the waitingroom for the ferries Empty cigarette cartons and a miscellaneous rubble of paper were strewn all over the place It was a most unattractive intro duction to what we had anticipat ed as a pleasant if brief outing Wouldnt it be possible for the owners of the property to hire someone to keep the place tidy It would be good business to do so It could be that our temper was not bettered when we found that we were partially marooned to the seat of the boat by a piece of chewing gum that got attached to our pants However we didnt think so much of that because if there is a piece of chewing gum around itll find some spot to lodge on our person And like the rice in China theres lots of chewing gum in Canada We Make Land Having made safe passage we landed at Centre Island We walked through the park towards the business section in search of a pot of tea The trees and shrubbery looked as beautiful as ever but over the parks rubble of paper bags more empty cartons and discarded were strewn around True there were waste receptacles but they were almost empty Picnickers pre ferred to throw their garbage on to the grass One wondered if they acted in this primitive fash ion at hornet We arrived at Centres Main street to find more rubble and paper scattered around The street looked as if it needed a good cleanup The odd thought crossed our mind that here was a golden opportunity for the Au rora Jaycees to demonstrate the virtues of domestic cleanliness A few of the stores looked attrac tive but the majority had a shabby face On large premises appeared the inviting sign Room But when we got within range of the door we discovered that the place was empty It looked as though it had been uninhabited for some time Further down the street we came to a tea room that we knew well in other days It was functioning and we went in No Facilities It was in that very tearoom where our wife and self listened to one of Hitlers most notorious speeches in the summer of All the world was on that speech which could mean peace or war Hitler talking when we went in and he was still talking when we left two hours later Translators from all parts of the world were telling their audiences what he saying as it did 14 years earlier But the change that had taken place in its government was immedi ately obvious We wanted to wash our hands and also to re move some of the gratuitous gum from the seat of our pants We humbly enquired for the wash room only to discover that there wasnt one We didnt think if worth while to advise the rather uppish young lady waitress that such an omission was not in ac cordance with restaurant regula tions We drank our tea and de parted Disgraceful Conditions We went in search of the pub lie washrooms that we knew once existed We found them and entered But we were out again with the speed of one flee ing from the plague The odors and the filthy state of the place were such that we preferred to suffer the pangs of nature rather than to stay one moment in such an stable We tackled the first man we met outside so that we might release our feelings of disgust He was an elderly man who had known the islands for years People make slums he told us and the island is be coming a slum He traced the history of this decline over the past few years He agreed with us that something should be done But the problems of who should get it done and when left him it did us very puzzled We Look Around We found a sanctuary for our urgent needs at a private residence which it was our pur pose to visit This home is on one of the main streets that somehow appears to have held out successfully against the rav ages of decline There were other streets where good proper- ties have maintained their for mer prestige Lawns were trim and attractive By and large however we re marked a great decline at Centre Island in the years we last visited it This is a most re grettable fact for the islands were carved by nature into shapes of beauty The islands were Indeed an oasis where To ronto could find Mr and Mrs Bell Sun- fish camp Stroud and Rev and Mrs Toronto were recent visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs
