whose has direct associations with Aurora for something like one hundred years Since his ap pointment we have heard num erous suggestions that John would make an excellent mem ber of the town council and we heartily agree John Willis never hesitates to express an opinion on any sub ject that interests him Nor is he easily bawled out But this we can say from experience However be may argue the point he never introduces ran cour or persona feeling into a discussion Hes as good a friend at the end of the argument as he was at its start Speaking of the acting secre tarytreasurer to the Athletic Field board Gardner Lloyd Gardner not Gardiner please that was an odd com ment the Banner carried about him last week It described Gardner as a man from outside Aurora The odd remark lias amused many people who know that Mr Lloyd was born in Au rora educated here and has hardly been away from the town His family is one of the oldest in Aurora Since Gard ner Lloyd was in at the start of the floodlighting project and has worked hard for Its success the remark of his being an out sider is hard to understand ex cept for the understanding that the oddest quirks and quiddities locate In APRIL NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYTHREE EDITORIALS APRIL 1951 APRIL 1 Two years ago this present month we began our association with the Era Express by founding the Aurora News Page Thus we celebrate another birth day on a newspaper for which we have been proud to write We have been proud also to serve the interests of our Aurora readers by giving them facts and opinions unadulterated by personal or advertising considerations We have received magnificent support from our Aurora readers The proof of this is in the increasing sales of our newspaper AH attempts to down us have failed Many such attempts have been made by the Banner and a small group of men of varying degrees of importance none of it of a major quality and most of it selfassumed pi For some time now the Banner has refrained from publishing abusive anonymous letters charging us with damaging the town or in Reeve Cooks more pious phrase damning it It could be that the Banner man agement ml these attacks most harmful to itself Abusive anonymous letters carry no weight with intelligent readers One of our major undertakings during the past two years has been to report as fully as space would allow the doings of the town council In carrying out that undertaking we a v reported what we have heard and followed this up by commenting on it the following week The comments are contained in our feature article Council Sidelights In noting another year of progress for Aurora News Page we sincerely thank our readers for their loyal support and also thank alt those who have taken any part in the sale of our newspaper The great progress of the Era and Express as shown by the audited figures recently published proves that it is the class of weekly newspaper most readers want THAT 180 GUARANTEE At this writing we dont know what council will finally do with regard to the motion that slumped so badly when it was proposed that a grant of be made to the in connection with the running of an excursion train from Toronto to Aurora on the steam train centennial dale May Only three supporters favored the motion at the council meeting on April Whether council will review the proposal so favor ably recommended by the mayor remains to be seen To us the proposal seemed preposterous a little screwy as Councillor Davidson described it The steam train centennial is obviously a project Its relationship to Aurora is no more than incidental Con sidering the fuss Banner has been making over the event one might think that the steam train had been run for the benefit of the village of Aurora as it was then Quite recently the paid over to the govern ment a dividend of That proof of profit does not suggest that the needs a backing of from the Aurora town treasury Yet tho reeve deputy- reeve and councillor apparently thought it did If the has not worth of confidence In proposed excursion train why should Aurora hold bag In the 100 yours of steam train service Aurora does not appear to have received many advantages On enquiry wo were informed that only three trains carry passengers daily between Aurora ami Toronto at am am and pm Only three trains from Toronto carry passengors to Aurora at am pm and pm return fare is and there Is a weekend return Tare On such Information it Is scarcely possible to arouse any unusual degree of excitement for a that means so little in practical service to travellers in the year IMS REPORT Aurora Social News School Costs Need Reassessing And Outstanding Taxes Debated The mayor presided at a general meeting of council held on Monday night April 20 at the correspondence read was a letter from Mr B Gilbert in which he complained that he had not been asked to tender for new waterworks pickup truck and wondered why Councillor J Murray chairman of the fire and water department said there were two reasons why Mr Gilbert had not been asked to tender The first was that the was not in their opinion in the price range his committee needed and the second reason was that Mr Gil bert could not expect to gel all the business in town which he Mr Murray thought should be moved around He said he was both disappointed and surprised that Mr Gilbert had sent such a letter to council A motion to send Mr Gilbert a letter of reply was adopted Aurora Bears The mayor suggested that the 300 grant to buy sweaters for the Aurora Bears should bo held over with a view to diverting the money to help a town fund for the forthcoming defence of Walter Fines Councillor Murray and Jones agreed that everything should be done to support the boy and these views were endorsed by all members of council The Budget Councillor Dale King finance committee chairman introduced the budget a complete re port of which readers will find on the second Aurora News Page In the course of his com ments Mr King disclosed that were outstanding in tax es an increase of over the previous year Considerable discussion took place on budget figures Councillor J Murray said that the chief reason for heavy of the previous year was to be found in the public school hoard expenditures Continuing his argument Mr Murray said that on the surface it seemed that council had no control over public school ex penditures hut actually they had control if they wanted to exor cise it Ho claimed that there had been waste of money in tin past and bad calculations during present period He said that some years ago tho public school board had let some down the drain and for recent purposes the hoard had miscal culated costs by Councillor Murray reminded council that Mr had re turned from his estimated contract which perhaps an other contractor would not done He said present coun cil as far as now members were concerned was not respon sible for the heavy mill Increase Councillor King a vigor- j defence of public school board saying it was a properly elected body and had a right to make its own decisions He said they couldnt have gone on with tho old school and they had two fine schools now Councillor Davidson consider ed that both schools could have been modernized and continued in use at a great saving of lax- payers money Deputy- Reeve Murray said that the extra cost of education had to be taken into account Replying to Councillor Murray the deputyreeve said the pur chase of the land on George St might prove of great value in the near future The mayor commended Coun cillor King and his committee on the budget saying that the need for extra taxes had been met courageously He drew atten tion to the excellent graph Mr King had drawn up for ready understanding of mill rate per centages On a motion by Councillor King seconded by Deputy- Reeve Murray the budget was unanimously adopted Unpaid Taxes Councillor Moffat drew atten tion to the arrears of and said this was a seri ous matter If this considerable sum had been collected it could meant a much smaller ad dition in the mill rate Mrs Moffat asked what council in tended do on the matter The mayor said a special meet ing should he called and the list of delinquents considered and action taken to recover arrears This was agreed to Subdivision Councillor J Murray drew the attention of council to an Important reservation that ap peared in the plan and said that amounting to one foot of land could If per mitted give a power to the owner that was not in the draft plan which council had approv ed Mr Murray suggested that no services by the town he un dertaken until such as the matter was clarified The deputyreeve ami other members of council agreed that the reservation was not included in draft plan Council agreed not to proceed further until whole matter was clari fied and the planning hoard was requested to take steps accord ingly New Track The mayor referred to a little ceremony that hod taken place at the service station when Councillors Murray and Jones attended with himself to hand tho key of the new water works truck over to Joe Mc- Ho said the boys were very happy over now equip
