in search of happiness say it is seldom wise to be too positive about anything We have heard it said that there are the exceptional human beings not happy unless Miserable There are people who are prone to magnify the molehill and minimize the mountain By nature and they At allgKti of indisposition they phone for the not ponder on hthcirrate- jrasfeidUy- explain why they have imagination of reason and by every passing The majority of human beings seek happi as their primary objective life The is power of human seeks it in his way Some seek it through too much drink and die of bellies again seek it through a denial of natures needs in order to keep thin They too often die early of certifiWd wothr Normal human beings happiness above all else The happily Wants to gee wife happy and and a Very New Year SPARROW While we wrote the foregoing article A- New Year a sparrow flew and sat God knows he looked hungry and shrivelled There was no chirp left in him He pecked around the bare ledge seeking what he could hot find The day of his pride had gone and new he was alone and fending for himself We pitied his barren plight God made the simple Why no one can ity Far removed as he is from the design iji which humans are fashioned he yet shares two major needs with them Perennial clothing he carries around with him But he needs food and shelter Shelter he can find in But what about food When the snow covers the earth and frost congeals it what can he do for survival In the summertime the sparrow asserts his self- importance Like humans he is torn with the emotions of love Often ho fights bloody duels to secure his mate- When he has found her he protects her Together they build a beautiful nest for their offspring These they raise with loving care The does not divorce his wife He has taken her for better or for worse lie sticks by his bargain In the summertime he chirps around so that all may hear him He is a proud often an arrogant fellow Devoid of without it seems a note of music inside him he cuts capers quite out of proportion with his limited gifts He is often as noisy as ft frustrated poli tician While it lasts he has a gay time thinking not of the The morrow is here The summer has gone The snow is on the ground and it is sealed with frost Ho is alone lie is hungry There is no chirp left in him lie cannot ask for food He must wait on human passion God made him the sparrow We must throw him a handful of crumbs King out the old ring In the new ring out false ring in the true ring in the thousand years of peace wrote poet laureate during the reign of Queen carried out on a consid erable scale in Scotland and in the English northern counties where the Christmas holiday is short In the southern half of England Christmas is the chief festival but in northern England the custom is entirely different la The old custom of firstfooting is hardly known in southern England but in the northern counties it is so much a part of the seasons ritual that it would not be New Years without it The belief in firstfooting stems from a belief in omens of good and bad fortune in luck and in superstition Belief in symbol ism is a powerful inheritance shared by the Scots and their neighbors south of the Tweed It is not a sign of high intelli gence to sneer at superstition and its symbols In this con nection it is well to recall that there is more in heaven and earth than is dreamed of in your philosophy Horatio as Shake speare expressed it FirstF6otlng When the custom of first-foot- ig began or by whom it was Introduced is outside the re cords But its origin is ancient It is carefully planned friends and neighbors In brief it means that the first per son to cross ones af ter the stroke of midnight on December Is a firstfoot It is important that ones first visi tor in the New Year should carry some semblance of good luck for whole months come That first visitor must there fore be carefully selected While it has been claimed and a book written in proof of It that gentlemen prefer blondes such a claim is far from the truth as far as homes In north ern England are concerned Brunettes not blondes are pre ferred i Firstfooters are always men A woman as a firstfooter would be unacceptable matter what her distinctions might amount to The Ideal firstfooter is a man Immediately after the stroke of midnight on the last day of the old year he knocks on the door of a friends home enters and wishes every one Happy New Year As an omen of good luck he often carries into the home small bucketful of coal When this lias been deposited he accepts Hie hospitality of his host and drinks to the health of the A popular firstfooter will make many calls between he midnight hour and the crack of dawn lie is the vocal messen ger Of goodwill and good for tune for the New Year He is chosen for his gifts of affability and convivial qualities and his capacity to maintain perpen dicular posture under the in creasing strain of copious draughts of good liquor With out such varied talents the first- footer might easily leave behind him an atmosphere than one of joviality and a promise of good fortune Festival Season New Years hi Scotland and in the north of England is the- rent festival season of the whole months Stores are often closed for several days with a succes sion- of friendly and convivial tempo running In southern England little no tice Is of New Years real festival Is that of as in Canada A very event took place at the Oak ilgo inn oft Friday Dec JO when Mr arid Duckworth of the Aurora Auiomotivo enter tained their staff and their dec oration layouts Aurora store keepers did in fact do them selves proud in their displays of merchandise It would be invidious for this column to enter upon discussion on the merits of these layouts but we were Impressed with the attractive colorings In the Cam eron store which were beautifully balanced and blend ed Unusual novelty marked also the window and in a quite distinctive way Jack ensemble gave visible joy to adults and children alike A few days before Christmas we had haircut at the emporium and found the radio sending over some carols An other customer on entering the
