ITS Womans World By Caroline Ion We were speaking to a friend on the phone the other day and site said Have you seen the list of childrens hooks in the morning paper We cant seem to decide which ones to if only we buy copy of our family Her sighs were echoed by lis cents membership fees and on For books life everything offer- this visit to the for these days have in- library takes a library card Of creased in price Radios cost more Food costs of prewar years seem unbelievably low in retrospect And of course pub costs have been caught in the same inflationary trendy A good book is abound invest ment But so are stout boots for Bob and Jack for Susan a great num ber of Canadian it is not a question of course continued Mr feel that the library should be in each classroom Not just ELECTED evitablejfainy day does not per mit such Christmas and books go to gether This time of year when we are planning our Christmas books for the small ones oh our list we are aware of the high costs of the beautifully bound wellillustrated volumes A questionnaire recently- cir culated throughout northern York county on childrens ing by the Home arid School echoed this concern over the price of childrens books Most of the questionnaires admitted that the price of these books af fected the number they purch ased each year that their school board allotted each class room in that school annually for library books Mai- Over a period of cedent library will become avail- I ONT tit able to all the children attend ing that school After tha business meeting a social halfhour was enjoy when refreshments were Gordon Cmtcher who teaches in Toronto told of the annual contributions of TOe dedicatory to each class room for the pur chase of library books which the Home and School association at his school was making Here we felt were ways of providing fine editions for all the communitys children rather than through the publishing of inferior editions Here also is a way in which we the public the taxpayers the teachers and for the executive will be held at the January meeting parents of the towns boys and girls could bring to correct the j present situation Children reading has been Perhaps if we make our re- brought into closer focus by other events recently There was Young Canadas book week in November and Marie drans visit to the Newmarket Home and School The Decem ber meeting of Home and School council which was held in the attractively renovated Aurora public school Wells St had childrens reading as its theme Mrs Browning was convener At this latter meeting a lively discussion was held on many phases concerning child reading The guest speak er Charles author of the current juvenile stressed the need for providing good books for our children He said that poor paper poor illus trations and an inferior publi cation would not satisfy a childs love of beauty We must buy a book which will interest the youngster It must be one which he is proud to own his interest and pride of possession he will enjoy and treasure his new book The same thoughts were echo ed by the radio skit headed by Mrs Sheik with Rev Kent and Walter Sanders as sisting Under Mrs Sherks di rection the discussion period brought forth many suggestions One of these presented by Mrs Myrtle Newmarket was that the publishers be asked 16 make reprints of good childrens hooks which could compete with comic books suggestion was that beside each pile of comic books in the stores would bo placed another of books reprints of many fine juveniles now available only iri much more expensive editions These reprints would sell for some where around Mrs argued that if such a project was undertaken it would not he too long before children would select Hie better books in preference to the comics Some at the meeting which filled the school auditorium agreed with Mrs Others fell that wasnt the host me difference the typo of paper or cover of tins- book if the contents reading mat ter is the same asked Mrs We want the children to read if they crmt afford the better books they will con tinue to read only comics In such a move would the final results be a lowering of our publishing we Would it not perhaps better to keep striving for beautiful edition hut make them available to all children through our riiibHc libraries or libraries within the schools Mr school principal told of how all Grade I and pupils arc taken by their teachers to the Aurora public quests known more books will be available for the children in our schools and public libraries Perhaps if we support the lib rary boards pleas for a more liberal budget and back their re quests for new quarters greater use of the towns library will be made It is an important subject We want our children to become avid readers We want them to know and enjoy the world that awaits them in good books Can we make a library service avail able to them within the class rooms of Newmarket schools Can we expand public library the size it should be We feel certain that the civic minded members of these boards will welcome inter est and support Will they it LADIES NIGHT The Rotary club held its annual
