s Notebook The long arm of coincidence was stretching a bit when it brought us into contact with a friend of some years back and one we havent seen for some years At a meeting of the Aurora council the members duly considered a letter from a visitor who while parked on St briefly to get direc tions had received a parking ticket The letter pointed out that they had been parked only a minute and then bad gone their way to their destination where they had duly put a nickel in the parking meter The writer of the letter said he was blind Clerk Ken Moses had difficulty making out the name but finally spelled it out Wong When we beard the name we began to remember years ago when a cub on the Toronto Star how we had met and the fun we had had since was the editor of the Chinese Times a Chinese lang uage daily paper published in Toronto He was blind even then but it made no appreciable difference to his editing of the paper His assistants would read him the news dispatches and he would tell them how he wanted the news handled He dictated his editorials Yick also had an interest in a restaurant and on Saturday nights we would go there for what was the best of Chinese food We always privately be lieved that would have preferred good rare roast beef to such exotic dishes as barbe cued pork and roast duck but he was a considerate host and we dined well has since left the Chin ese paper and now travels a great deal and we had lost con tact with him until Monday night when at he asked that a parking ticket be can celled PS It wasnt Elsewhere in this issue is a also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth Into Judaea unto the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house of the David To be faxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with child And so it was that while they wen then the days were accomplished that she should be delivered And this thai be a sign unto you Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swad dling clothes tying in a manger And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host prais ing God and saying Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace good will toward men And she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger be came there was no room for them in the And it came to pass as the angels wen gone away from them into the heaven the shepherds said one to another Let us go even to Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass which the Lord hath made known to us inn And tfnre were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock by night 17 And to the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in the manger And when thy had seen it they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning the child And all they that heard it wondered at those thing which were told them by the shepherds And the angel said unto them Fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of greet joy which shall be to all people But Mary kept all these things and pon dered them in her heart For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen as it was told unto them Mm the servant not Htm master of their MH on trftt In International and national It km function of state to of which j J i Office Cat children will all be forward to a visit from Sandy Clans next week and that reminds your friend uncle Slim of a little story about a bad king at Christ mas time lived a few hun dred years ago This here king was a bad and mean king His name was King John and he ruled over England hundreds of years ago I have been up about him in this British history book called Now We Arc This here King John it said was not a good man He had his wicked ways He used to lop off heads of his subjects at will Any whim what came in to his head might mean a few heads chopped off his citizens but it meant nothin to him see Whats a few heads lopped off to satisfy me whims he would say But there was one thing what he couldnt get with a snap of the finger He wanted a great India rubber ball Christmas and no matter how many heads he lopped off he couldnt get a India rubber ball fer Christmas He wrote a long letter to Father Christmas thats what he called Sandy Ciaus and asked him if he would drop a nice quality India rubber ball down the chimney Father Christmas he wrote If love me at all gimme a nice big In dia rubber ball Then he post ed his royal letter at the top of his chimney Christmas mornin rolled around and you kin imagined vhat a sad sack King John was when he found that Sandy Ciaus hadnt left him any India- rubber hall Its its treason cried the king But the King knew that he couldnt do about it cause Sandy was immune to the kings law So King John just moped around the house on Christmas day feelUY sorry for But we why Sandy didnt give him no rubber ball fer Christ mas dont we Bad kings is the same as bad children If they aint good all year they wont git Christmas either just like kids Later in the day however there was some kids in the street with a big India rub ber ball and by accident it smashed through the window of the kings living room kin imagine how happy this here bad king was He imped around his palace his ball off the ceilin and the and off the nose of a bronze statue of William the Conqueror shoutin with glee His glee was shortlived however because the kids came to the door ganged up on him and got their ball back Thus King John went back again and after Christ mas he went back to his wicked ways agin He lopped off more heads in the new year than he ever did before Never learned his lesson that gotta be good all year round not just the week before Christmas If you wants Sandy to give you somcthir all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Signed Uncle Slim gens by Dairy Farmer The Top Six Inches It is just a week before Christmas As much as we would like to tell you about the latest happenings in the milk business and the last word on the ballot for an agency or the latest capers of the Milk Con trol Board we are unable to shut out this feeling that the singing of carols and the extra excitement of our children and the slowly accumulating pile of Christmas cards some addres sed to our spouse only bring with it As the day of His birth ap proaches we feel more and more keenly that we have a lot to be thankful about and as we do the winter chores in the barn and look at our young cattle growing and occasionally sit in front of a fireplace we are in a very mellow mood We feel we all had a good year as years on a farm go We had a lot of mud in the spring and we had a chance to thunder about roads We had a spring and the seed didnt al ways get in the ground In time But we learned from it Hay ing was hard this year and the quality isnt too good but there is a lot of it and the cows will eat it also proved to us that grass silage is every bit as good as it is cracked up to be Our cows are testing higher milk ing well and look good We have a difficult harvest and wo were sore at the Minister of Agriculture for counting chick ens before they were hatched- But when all the results were in he wasnt too far beam We were hurt with the of living and the long prolonged negotiation for a new milk price We learned from it The marketing agency polled a vote of within 100 votes to be carried As a result of it we may have a organiza tion In any case we couldnt have a worse year for milk pro duction again as far as price is concerned We should also be grateful for the New Milk Control Hoard They made a point of doing everything awkwardly and in a weak and hesitant manner Just before Christmas though we feel they could only improve from here on In any case it taught us the futility of political meddling and the dan ger of a system where elections are not the selection of the best man for a job but a con spiracy to stay in power We should also be grateful that we have achieved for all intents and purposes a one party Government without hav ing to resort to a dictate by the simple and democratic means of being lazy and unin terested in the business of run ning our community We are bound to learn from it and ap preciate the freedom of this country which includes the freedom from having to shoul der any responsibility at elec tion time We are grateful for the health we enjoyed and the tolerance other people showed towards our foibles We should be thankful to be allowed to tell you what we felt was worth telling you and the remarkable Christian spirit of understand ing which greeted some of our wilder utterances We think we are safe in stating that we are a year older than we were last year at this time and if we are wiser we will some proof of it next year For this we are also very grateful We had heifer calves and bull calves which is as close to an equal distribution as we can hope for In another few days we enjoy all that Is bountiful in this country The food and generosity of our beloved ones will surround us We will eat more than we should and more often than it wise We will try to give our children a feeling of warmth and love to strengthen them for the years ahead of them We will try and tell them the real of Christmas which is love and tolerance And now may wish you a Merry Christmas May God bless us one and all THE OLD HOME TOWN By STANlfY
