YOUNG it Into Fi with sandwiches Janet eight was frightened into telling her first real fib Prior to this experience Janet had never really fibbed She had imagined events and told little stories as such but she had never told a story for the truth until she was frightened into doing just that Janet had been visiting a lady one morning She had had her usual quota of freshly baked cookies and was trailing her fa vorite lady around the house during the process of household chores when her mother called for her to come home The neighborlady was up stairs when Janet left but she saw her slip a cookie in her pocket as she went out the back door In a flash an upstairs win dow opened and the surprise question was asked Janet Did you take a cookie Jan et Janet was startled and fright ened She couldnt help herself KEEPS She immediately said No in selfdefense Then Janet was told she had put a cookie in her pocket whereupon she said she hadnt and ran in the direction of her home hearing the angry words yelled after her Yes you did I saw you put a cookie in your pocket- Although Janets mother didnt have a view of the cookie the circumstantial evidence was very much against Janet who ran home hurried into the bathroom and almost immediately flushed the toilet This little episode left an in delible impression on Janet who felt and she was right she had been grossly mistreated At a much later date she explained her reason for taking the cookie without asking for it Usually her favorite lady gave her an extra one to take home to her mother If the call from the window had been a suggestion of that nature Janet would have explained that she had taken one for that purpose Too often children are forced into telling fibs Selfpreserva tion is still the first law of na ture and great care should be taken not to place children in a position in which they are fright ened into telling an untruth However when such an occa sion does arise it is important to build up faith if the childs integrity rather than question ing his integrity forever after A mans bond is only as good as his word Iff MUTUAL roue J Aurora Representative for Newmarket and District NORMAN KETTLEBY DOLLY
