intersection of St find has one of the most hazardous corners in the district A conservative es timate of accidents there is one a week with the number on the increase as summer traffic vol ume grows Most of the accidents occur when drivers attempt to turn off St onto the townline or attempt to enter St from the town line There is com paratively less through traffic Moat drivers using the townline as a route into or from New market and the east shore lake roads A narrow highway a hill to the south which limits vision and grades which encourage high rates of speed are all contribut ing factors More recently the heavy Sunday night traffic con gestion on St has been a contributing factor At present there is talk of widening St and the county in its turn has discussed the widening of the at the corner The county cannot act however until the provin cial department of highways makes up its mind and there has been no indication of a final de cision from them t Pioneers Share Annual Picnic At Temple June The York Pioneer and Historical Society and York County Womens Institutes will have their first com- picnic at the Sharon Temple grounds on June 1G The decision to share the picnic little used until it was paved but since then according to residents along the road traffic has increased in volume two or three times and a bus service uses it as well Suggestions for making the corner safer have included the installation of traffic lights but it is pointed out lights would only increase the existing con gestion on Yonge St A- The combined picnic it is hop ed will mark the beginning of a close collaboration between the two groups to encourage a great er interest in the preservation of local historical sites and the pro motion of a wider interest in local history A and will be fin anced by grants from the muni cipalities and contributions from the society Loose dogs have been a major nuisance in most municipalities The cost of their control how ever is more than any one muni cipality cares to spend In re cent months there have been several meetings- among district councils in an effort to arrive at an answer together Societys offer is the first concrete solution and received a warm response Present at the meeting held in Aurora were representatives from Richmond Hill Aurora Vaughan and Newmarket coun cils while not rep resented was said to be interes ted The Societys proposal includ ed tentative costs of operation and tentative grants required from each council The Society itself will contribute 2000 to wards the work It was an enthusiastic meet ing said Mrs Marie Askew president of the society We have great hopes that the coun cils will join us in this program She stressed however that if the councils were unwilling to go ahead with the society that the society would undertake the job itself to the extent of its fac ilities The societys proposals were presented by Rev Christopher Loat provincial general secre tary of the Society for the Pre vention of Cruelty to Animals Civil LAKE BUSINESSMEN SEEK TO IMPROVE RESORT AREA In an effort to encourage de velopment along the south and east shores of Lake Sirncoe in the resort areas businessmen there have formed an association a meeting this week Al was president and Ray secretary The association has petitioned local councils to take stronger action against the repetition of last street dance is being plan ned for late in June The group also asked that signs be erected wherever the police are operating speed traps There is no money to carry on civil defence among municipalities according to authorities in Newmarket They blame the federal government It had been pro posed that the three levels of government municipal provincial and federal take part in civil defence organ ization At present everyone is looking to the next government up for money Sound last week which Mr Ev ans attended there was consid erable discussion about the lack of money Most of the mayors and reeves felt that the federal government is responsible for national defence and that it should be responsible for civil ian defence According to Mr Evans Tor onto has its coordinator and are being NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL A Sunday school for the chil dren in the camp area will open in the former camp chapel now the Association hall this coming Sunday at 3 pm The school will be directed by Tickets may be had from members of the classes J a manuscript was handed to us by a Miss Anne of on the sub ject of school examinations The essay seemed so timely and so truthful that we decided to pass it on to you Miss is well known for her youth work and for essays of this nature which appear periodically in a Canadi an magazine Her essay is en titled Why Exams She writes Exams as 1 see them are one of the greatest obstacles in a pupils life at school We have them to test his skill and knowledge but do they Perhaps from the teachers standpoint they are the fairest way of testing a pupils knowl edge but I think that the pupils would rather have monthly tests on the work recently covered and take a mark from the total marks made For some pupils exams come easy and they do not become riled Others do and forget what they have stud ied then bingo there goes their mark On these monthly tests which of course the pupil would not have to know were coming each pupil would be given an equal chance and would not become as nervous as he often does dur ing the larger examinations 50th ANNIVERSARY Members of the family held a surprise party for Mr and Mrs John T Winters Newmarket at the King George Hotel on the occasion of their wedding anniversary Mr Winters at is still working at the Office Specialty where he has been em ployed for years In the evening there was a reception at the home of a son Ernest at which were present The couple was presented with gift of a new bill wrapped in gold Then there is another case let us suppose one pupil pays strict attention in class does his work and puts his time to good advantage but when exams come he gets nervous and for gets what he has learned Then another person comes along he has fooled the term cop ied his homework and has been a general nuisance all year He Organization and citizens with technical knowledge in New market have expressed a desire publicly and privately in the last six months to take part in train ing and organization A few months ago it was an nounced that a framework for a master city and county organiz ation would be set up Thislias been done and has appointed town engineer complete staff who as defence and Major M Ewing to work with him According to Mr and Reeve Arthur D Evans a civil defence framework has been set up in the York county area with coordinators appointed in each municipality But there are no funds to work with A national policy to govern all civil defence is lacking as well Mr said this week that there is no central author ity to give proper defence in structions so that all municipal ities can work together There is probably plenty of criticism because nothing has been done about civil defence but there is no use giving out public instruc tions now if they will be changed later the confusion would make it difficult in cooperating with other defence areas he said Reeve Evans said Nobody has any idea as to what could happen in these times There is a need for civil defence At the mayors and reeves convention at Owen To Show Iris At Annual Display Sat Local garden enthusiasts and particularly iris lovers will be gathering in the basement of the Christian Baptist church on Saturday June for the annual iris show of the Newmarket Hor ticultural Society The show is under the joint convencrship of Howard Proctor and Howard Hu go Included in the show will with they have he entries being tagged before no money or plans to work with A r Meanwhile in Newmarket there are trained technicians who could be taking defence training Amateur radio operators in New market and Aurora have express ed a desire to help but they lack instructions for useful em ergency operations of radio sets particulars Members of the medical pro fession have pointed out the need for a survey of the town for accommodation for evacuated persons The veterans organiza tions have expressed their will ingness to cooperate All in all the general public is ready to cooperate but public patience will last only so long The first suggestions for civil defence came from community organizations They were told to wait that the municipal and higher governments would look after it and that their co operation would be needed short ly If there is much more delay the desire to cooperate will have worn off pm Beginners are invited to it as well as those who have regularly entered flowers in the societys shows The show com mittee is anxious to have a large entry They will assist any mem ber so call on them for farther RED SHIELD DRIVE EXCEEDS OBJECTIVE FOR TOTAL The Salvation Biggest objection of municipalities to provincial grants has been that the province imposes restricting conditions on their expenditures In both Newmarket and Aurora councils and in the townships this objec tion is being heard with increasing frequency COMING EVENTS SEEK LAKE PARK A meeting of the Toronto and York Planning Board and Ad visory Committee has suggested that York county purchase acres of land on the south shore of Lake for a park and picnic grounds Members of the committee said that private property is taking up so much area on the shore that there would be no room for picnics and public fish ing in the future as far north as The property which was sug gested is part of a large estate up for sale and has a large lake frontage It would cost over Unless some property is bought by Boyds Transport has been purchased by James Walker formerly from Toronto The business handles general freight between Mount Albert Newmar ket Toronto At present the service is working out of Harold Gordons garage on Davis Dr west We are becoming rubber stamps for provincial policies the cry is heard There appears to bo some hope that these objections will be met At the meeting of the Ontario Mayors and Reeves Association last weekend Premier Frost an nounced plans for a committee to review this and all other prob lems arising between municipal ities and the province I am sympathetic to the rep resentatives of the municipalities that there is a need for free and unallotted grants in lieu of tax ing powers he said At the present lime provincial grants of one form or another make up approximately onethird of Newmarket revenues These grants are made in almost every department of municipal admin istration The grants are made however according to a wide variety of conditions which the municipality must observe Fre quently a condition of receiving a grant is that the town spend similar amount or a variety of percentages of the amount of grant before it can be paid Municipal councillors charge that such a practice encourages unnecessary spending by the municipalities Retired After 25 Yrs InRCMP E A Kirk Opens River Freight Line A former Newmarket man A Kirk is going into
