of expensive living the question with most people is gel the best value for ones money In the ease of newspapers or maga zines there can he no doubt about The Family Herald and Weekly Star of Montreal giving the greatest value for the money on the continent The Family Herald and Weekly Star Is a combination of news paper magazine and agricultural paper costs only a year and each subscriber receives hand some souvenir portrait of the Prince of Wales Inches We learn the subscription price will be after December Ust No better value can be had than a years trial of big Montreal Weekly It each week and and trys partial dependence on the United Slates for this commodity and per ceive that the supply may oat off at any limb- Hut Canada is not wholly depen dent on the Stales for her coal Her fuel resources exist in large coal fields situated at the extreme east and west unit from these- she exports As Canada is dependent on the lnlted States In central areas so Is the United Slates dependent upon Cana da on the Pacific and Atlantic The imports however exceed exports the imports being seven times greater Wo cannot be economically inde pendent but we can lessen our depen dence It has been easy and convenient lo obtain fuels of all kinds from the United States and consequently Cana dians have not developed their fuel resources Their problem Is not conservation but the best means of using their extensive supply of low- grade fuels such as peat and lignite III order to render ourselves less de pendent Reserves of Peat This country has miles covered with peal bogs Peat and lignite arc classed as low grade fuels The peat bogs happen to tie situated the areas which are devoid of coal It Is believed that when the peat deposits of the central provinces and the lignites of Saskatchewan Al berta are made into forms tabic for domestic and industrial purposes the fuel situation so far as Canada Is concerned will be greatly improved Twelve thousand square miles of peat bogs are found In central Cana da Mpnltoba Ontario Quebec and New Brunswick It Is estimated that the quantity of peat here would equal million tons of coal Information regarding manu facture or preparation of peat for fuel Is at hand Within the past ten years the mines department has in vestigated and mapped Canadian bogs Seven bogs conveniently located could supply Toronto tons of fuel The report of the Holland peat bog which has been examined by the mines department shows thai It Is suitable in every way for manufacture of fuel Apparently there have been many failures in attempts to establish a peat Industry In Canada Mr be lieves the reason for tins be the Im practical methods employed An the manufacture The Ottawa mines branch has prepared a and com plete report on the peal industries and methods employed In Europe The only economic process for Cana da has been shown In operation Alfred Out a low grade fuel peal must be manufactured and sold at a low cost approximately a ton European countries have had for years extensive and flourishing pod Industries Nearly all the peat produced in Is airdried and lids the only method by which peat can be manufactured economically In Canada This Is employed at Alfred Irish Methods This does not mean the same primitive methods used by the peas ants of Ireland are in use In Canada In Ireland the raw peat is dug from the bog with spades and left to dry later it is stored In A shed or stacked in field In Holland the peas ants place peal on hard ground and put It thru a kneading process making It Into a pulp by treading of horses This pulp Is then hand into cakes which are put In ihe sun to dry An Improvement on this primitive method produces what Is known as airdried machine peal and the pro cess consists of six of raw peal from drained bogs by means of mechanical excavations Is followed by pulping This Is a grinding process for the pur pose of cutting small roots and fibres and to produce a fine texture The transportation of pulped peat lo the drying field Is Ihe operation which must he kept as low as possible In A set of small cars running on a portable track drawn by a Linking of the Great Lake Ports the Ports of the 8eveh 8eM
