General Superintendent the Methodist Church in Canada Newfoundland and Bermuda to in connection with the anniversary of the First Metho- dist Church During the- past year this splendid edifice has been improv ed and at an expense about two thousand dollars and the anniversary colehralion was the occasion of a spe cial effort in way of a thank offering to meet the expenses in curred in this way A prelimi nary canvass of a few of the members of the congregation re sulted in a liberal subscription list which together with the en velope offerings of Sunday and the proceeds of the annual tea brought a total of over with or subscription yet to he re ported improvements and altera tions during the year included the installation of a new electric blower for the organ at a cost of about the moving of the organ console to the rear of pulpit painting and decorating the Sunday School room the re wiring of the church throughout the painting of the outside of the woodwork the church the in stalling of two new furnaces a new roof for the Mission Church and other minor improvements In these repairs and improve ments tlie Quarterly and Trustee Hoard have added greatly to the appearance and beauty of the and the successful scries of services on Sunday last were a fitting climax to the excellent work that has been done by the Hoard and to the most efficient leadership of the pastor Rev J Wood MA who is now just closingthe last year of his ministry in Ibis church In connection with the services of the pastor Rev J Wood M A who is to leave this charge at the beginning of the next conference year to take the pastorale of Newmarket Metho dlist Church the following in Canada was strongly urged by grand jury in their presentment in the ses sions before Judge We are grieved to see so many young who not yet seriously thought of doing their bit in this flgbt for freedom say the Jurors Wo wish to place on record that the sooner our Government sees its way to pass some form of conscription and make of this idle manhood for the of those lighting our battles at the front the bettor will ho for world Great Britain and our beloved Do minion The jury referred to tho small number of cases dealt with but drew attention to the increase of immorality Wo cannot attri bute this to intoxicants or any thing of that nature hut wo at tribute it to the increase of the mentally deficient in congested communities Judge concurred with the jurys view in regard to Conscription I was pleased to see this paragraph in your pre sentment regarding the number of ablebodied young men who are still around our streets and look at any rate as if they ought to bo fighting with the boys in the trenches At the same should not judge all of them too harshly as many have applied and have been rejected I entirely agree with your suggestion I want Government to tell mo what ought to do to help war I have been groping my way alone so far Every man should have his own little duly pointed out to him so that the burden will not fall on those who are most willing to do it Dealing with marked in crease of immorality his Honor characterized it as an epidemic Let us hope that police who have made the discovery will not lift their bands until it is entirely stamped out His Honor expressed the hope that adequate provision would he made for the housing of those moral perverts with whom they had been dealing co A A SMILE THAT pMMHBD one nmlo another they crossing- the hall square Isnt faces like that nowadays They are rather rare said hie companion But must live correctly to have such a face A mans mode of will show face no matter how he may try to conceal A reporter was walking behind tho two mon arid overheard the conversation He boarded an train at Park Place and happened to take a scat near man whose face had favorable attentlqn On- the opposite side sat two women and a little girl The child suddenly and apparently without any cause began to cry to younger woman who evi dently was the childs mother had tried to comfort her hut to no purpose The child continued to cry and the big tears rolled down until the handkerchief borrowed from her mother was wet Once as little looked sho caught the eye of the man silting opposite and evidently saw something in his face which attracted her Her blue eyes opened wide and a smile spread over her face leav ing the big teardrops and a lit tle redness about the eyes as only evidence of the sorrow which had convulsed her a moment be fore The man smiled too and the child glided off her seal and crossing the aisle climbed up in to bis arms and settled herself comfortably on bis knee The mother sat dumbfounded for a moment- and cast searching glances at tho man in front of her who understanding sit uation perfectly said reassuring ly right madam When the train stopped at Fif teenth Street they ail got out the two women walking on ahead and the little girl clasping the man s hand was chatting perfectly SJpy and contented The face of the world bad changed for her a the presence of that mans smile and the tears of a moment were entirely forgotten hell sounded twice the gates closed with a bang and the train wheeled its way to tho upper part of the street leaving the reporter at his knees Fiftyeighth out I to his feet ho had car ried a or more station thinking of a child in stinct and a man 000i- of mm
