less next summer Clean up your own premises see and insist that your neighbors do like wise Especially clean out-of-tie-way- and every nook and cranny Plies will not go where there is nothing to eat and their principal diet is too filthy too mention Any odor pleasing to man is of fensive to the fly and vice versa will drive them away Take five cents worth of oil of lavender mix it with the same quantity of water put it in a common glass at omizer and spray it around the rooms where the flies are in the dining room spray it lavishly even on the table linen The odor Is very disagreeable to fiJes but refreshing to most people Geranium mignonette heliotrope and white clover are offensive to flies They especially dislike the odor of honeysuckle and bop blossoms According to a French scientist flies have Intense hatred for the color blue decorated in blue will help to keep out the flies together one tablespoon of cream one of ground black pepper and one of brown sugar This is poisonous to flics Put in a saucer darken the room except one window and in that set the saucer Lye chloride of or copperas of iron dissolved in water crude carbolic acid or any kind of Farms Note This sixrow a se lection several years ago by I bo Dominion from the old commercial sort which has been favorably known in Canada for a long lime and has been successfully grown in vory many districts As the testa in regard to yield arc still in progress Dual con clusions cannot yet ho drawn but it may be slated that the new selection appears to ho for many sections of this country the most productive barley known among those sorts which have fairly straw The straw of this barley is of good length and strength as compared with other popular sixrow sorts hut it should he emphasized that even the best barleys have a ten dency lo lodge when sown on rich soil in reasons when moisture is plentiful The heads of this va riety are exceptionally long and heavy and herein perhaps lies the secret of iU large yield In very high winds it does not be have quite so well as some of the other sorts shows a ten dency for Ihe heads to break off at the base and for Ihe kernels to thresh out on the ground However these objections al though worth considering in Ihe windswept prairie districts are of no importance in most locali ties The foliage is good and the plants are not particularly liable lo attacks of rust They will withstand a reasonable amount of drought and will grow well on a great variety of soils It should be remembered however thai as a rule barley does not succeed on soils which are badly in need of lime While it is early in rip ening like nearly all barleys of its class it does not mature ex ceptionally early being perhaps a trifle later than the average The awns of this barley adhere somewhat firmly so that for the best results it should be in a thoroughly dry condition when threshed The grain is of a very good yellowish colour and quite free from the objectionable green or blue shade which lessens the value of some barleys for exhi bition purposes Considering all its character istics Ottawa is recommended by the Dominion Ccrealist as the best variety sixrow barley for nearly all parts of Canada except those dis tricts where destructive winds are to be feared about harvest time li Fourteen Austrian merchant nog The following letter re ceived from of the Ball which is stationed at Camp ling March i Dear I have not received any mail from Canada yet but hope there is Home on the way over here and that of the letters are from you In the meantime I am writ ing you another loiter to let you know how we are gelling along Wo are at Camp and everything iscwell hut some of the huts are quarantined with the mumps and I am afraid it will hut we have about 300 mules look after They are a nice baulky bunch loo and we are having some time with them One of the lads kicked in Ihe face with one of them he other day and they think he will lose his eye overit They are a fine hunch of kickers be I love me The hoys in Camp wore had enough to kick but Ihoy were not in it with the mules as they kick at nothing and ben they kick hard too They will bo a line outfit when they get near the big guns for the minute a train passes here there is a stampede of mules for the other side of he field and you can do nothing with them Home fun believe me Well how is dear old Canada I suppose it is still cold and win try and lots of snow We only had one snow storm since have been over here and it only lasted about two hours after sun came up They say it is the second snow they have had this winter It is real nice here now a little wet at times but not very much and everything nice and green There is not very much sign of war here I have not seen any yet myself There havent been any air raids but the searchlights are going nearly every night and you can see right up into clouds on the darkest nights when they are going It looks funny to see these shafts of light wandering over the heavens look ing for steps I have not been able to get away for my leave on account of he mumps in camp and I do not know when I will be able to go I obtain the results from thejr labor It Is neces sary that all seed should be properly cleaned and bagged during the late winter season Every farmer has time to do this before seeding time Will you assist in the Greater Production of foodstuffs by careful cleaning of the seed Select out of your granary three times he amount of grain required for seed purposes- use of the fanning mill clean and reclean until you have Just sufficient for seed pur pose Use proper and plenty of wind in Hie mill and the third part remaining for seed will be the plump- eat which naturally arc the most vigorous Do this work before seeding com mences Do not hesitate to purchase pedi greed seed at an advanced price Two bushels of oats will sow an acre The extra return from good seed will be from five to ten bushels per and decidedly more in some cases The market value of the increased yield represents the additional outlay thai can be made for good seed per acre Vigor in seed grain is just as essen tial as vigor in live stock Many thousands of bushels of oats are lost annually due to the ravages of smut This waste can be largely eliminated by proper treatment of- the seed Secure pint of formalin for every to JO bushels of oats required for seed purposes Dilute with 12 gals of water and use a barrel in which the Dags of grain may be Immersed for minutes Spread out to dry and then place In new bags or In bags that have been treated In a similar manner and thoroughly dried thus preventing recontamination The adoption of these two sugges tions would mean millions of bushel of groin extra with practically no appreciable extra labor Your country asks your careful consideration and cooperation Consult Hie District Representative of the of Agriculture at Newmarket if you are not familiar with
