and his remains are with the Canadians who fiU South African graves spent his boyhood in Newmarket and obtained his education at our Public Schools When the war in South Africa he was in Toronto and a member of he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Regiment active ser vice and went out with the first contingent from this country He became well known and exceedingly popular thru his letters to bis mother that were published in press of this country scribing the country and hardships of the soldiers but always a murmur He felt sure that when his column reached Pretor ia the war would be over and he would be able to return home with tbe victors During the terribly hard marching which fell to the lot of the regiment towards the end of May after passing thru several engagements without injury the Battle of he was taken ill but his determination and pluck to reach the kept him in the ranks when he should have been on the sick list This brought about his death from enteric fever Johannes- burg on June 1900 for the disease- thru this neglect had ob tained a firm grip upon his system and the course of his illness was very rapid The news of his death was received with profound regret in Newmarket and Mr A It Watson at once suggested that a tablet should be placed in the Public School to perpetuate his memory and inspire the pupils to be imbued with his patriotism but the editor of the Era suggested a to commend his heroism and it is with much satisfaction that the idea was so appropriately put into a reality yesterday In next issue of the Era we hope to give our readers a picture of the Monument which is erected on the Water Works Lawn at the foot of Main Street facing the principal thorofare and bearing this inscription In Memory or HAINES Member of 2nd Bat Royal Canadian Regiment Who died for his Queen and Country in South Africa of June The Monument stands 9 feet inches above the foundation The die Is granite bluish tinge in a solid and yet grace ful shape it Is a bust of the dead soldier cut out of very fine granite and very true In design- The contract for memorial was given to Messrs Allan of Newmarket and have done their work with great credit The bust was modelled by Mr Walter Allard of Toronto and is well done The cost of the monument was all provided by per sonal subscriptions and patriotic concert Knitted Cotton Stockings Miss JttcPherson
