Klondike and announces that he has staked his claim on the Indian River and will work it during winter Extracts from Mr Browns letter read as fol lows Before anyone to take the trip I would advise him to consider well the hardships of the trail Them is no use undertaking it without at least one years supply of provisions After a weary trip of about seven days from Seattle on a boat with very little accommodations you are landed at a little sea coast Indian vil Iage Then you have a trip of about miles you have to pack your outfit of about 1500 or pounds to the man there you can sled it to the foot of the summit and there it is taken to the top by a train which is simpiy capstan turned by horses It draws up a sled load of about pounds per trip if the snow is not too soft A CONTINUAL BUZZARD On the summit the snow storms are so severe that half a day there will take the skin off your face You have to wear glasses and you are lucky if you escape snow blindness From the summit down to Lake is aweary hard tug half of tho time sinking to your waist in slush that part of the trail being a continual run of small frozen lakes and for the last two miles packing your load on your back You can cross Lake to Bennett Lake on a ferry a large row boat There you have to pack your load over a mile portage Here you make your boats you can buy lumber from a little mill at per thousand feet or you can cut trees and whip saw what lumber you want We bought lumber enough for to are RAFTING ON THE UPPER YUKON so called because of five separate rocks each about feet high our boat went through in the lead and without tak ing even a pail of water Next are the Rink Rapids and the prettiest Then comes straight sailing in swift water to Fort Selkirk where everyone lands to register their names and view the old trading post The travelling from there down is on swift water past high mountains and magnificent scenery We stopped at most of the i rivers along the route Stew art White Henderson Reindeer Sixth and Indian Rivers The last named is where we expect to put in the winter on property of our own not on the main river but on a tribu tary or pup as it is called here A BIG NUGGET I had almost forgotten to mention that a on Eldorado took out a nugget of gold the other day in value worth It seemed al most impossible to be true A great many of rich claimholders are spend ing their dust as fast as they make it in the dance halls and gambling dens at Dawson City Thousands of dollars change hands every night There are about people in Dawson City and report has it that as many more are on their way in Then a treat make a that carried two tons of freight and three men Over Bennett lake we had a splen did sail of SO miles and that evening we poled our boat through a river of about six miles into Tagish Lake and made another five miles before even ing Next day we sailed safely past Windy Arm a very deep and treach erous bay then through River past the Mission and Into Mud Lake miles long That night we camped at the mouth of Fifty Mile River miles down the river the noted Can yon Rapids RAPIDS Formerly Assistant at London fcriatand for Women of Hospital for Children Toronto advise anyone to come here without first considering the hardships of the trail and after being here the continued hunt for gold probably to result in disappointment for although many are making it others are not A man cari easily make good wages here a day in camp and up the gulches Mr Gardener of re ported for West Lack of punctuality is now looked upon as a great fault the outcome of a topic rapids three other boats arrived with eleven men and a woman They were all afraid to the run through Jack and I started first he in the bow and I in the stern and each with a paddle We went through at a terrible rate our riding the swells nicely and landed safely at the foot When the others saw how nicely went through they begged so hard that we take their boat through that we could riot refuse They wondered we would not accept for doing it The canyon is a sight never to be forgotten Perpendicular bluffs on either side Standing high up on the it is a pretty sight to see a boat phoning and tossing about in the rap ids far below The boat capsized that went through a few hours before ours all the goods were lost and the two men aboard were only rescued at White Horse Rapids some two miles below At the Horse Rapids we lowered our boats with a line We would have run these- rapids also but our cargo was too valuable to take chances The river from here down to Lake is very pretty and easy
