two and three of age is better than cream for thern They thrive and grow on it- Great I That was heading of bill which hod been into Fred Bat leys hand interest with which ho had begun to read bill grow into read that there would bo a on Juno lat open to all from fifteon to and that tho Baxter Company would first prized a brand now with tires worth hundred dollars The starting- point would bo specified later A special notice tho bottom of sheet informed those who wished to try for prize but who did not own a wheel that Baxter Bicyclo Co would let wheels for eight dollars a month day of tho race included By time Fred had finished read ing ho saw himself proud of that prize wheel spinning noiselessly along the envy of boy in Had ho not learn ed to rido on Tom Wheelers and was ho not best rider in town In imagination he was just lending his prize to Tom Wheeler proud to own anything that the rich squires son wanted to borrow when his vision faded and he thrust the hand bill in to his pocket How could he win prize without a wheel and without eight dollars to hire Ho could find no solution to this problem arid ho trudged on with a heavy heart At school race was dis cussed with great animation Every boy who did not own a wheel felt that this was the chance of his life to one and every boy who did own one was fired with tho desire for a brand now one with all latest improve ments Fred knew bicycle in ville and who owned it He listened breathlessly hoping to hear some pos sessor of a wheel say that he not enter tho race That might give him a chance to borrow In vain- all meant to try no matter how little chance they had of gaining glory and the new wheel Jim Forbes listened intently to all Fred said during the discussion As they entered the building he managed to get close to him Youre going in for it I suppose Bailey he asked carelessly No Im hot Fred answered rather shortly Ho did not like Jim Forbes and he felt that there was not a true ring to his voice as he said Oh you must It wouldnt be a fair race without you Bailey The lessons went very slowly that afternoon Fred thought and his reci tations wore not up to the mark You are assuming that the pro position gives just what you are try ing to obtain said his teacher kindly feeling that it must be something un usual that could cause her- best stu dent in geometry to make such hard work of his- lesson that afternoon That is what the Baxter Bicycle Company is doing thought Fred They assume that you have a bi cycle by opening the race to you yet a bicycle is just what you are trying to obtain by going in As they came out of school Tom Wheeler greeted Fred with a good- natured slap on the shoulder Let mo congratulate you before hand Bailey he said heartily What do you mean asked Fred Why on the race answered Tom Im going in with the rest but you will win it of course There rider in town who can come up to you Im not going in said Fred quietly Not going into the race I ex claimed his friend Youve been wanting a wheel for a year and now that you have a chance of getting one for almost nothing youre going to give it up Whats the matter Bailey I dont exactly Bee how I am go ing to enter the race without any wheel thats all Fred tried to speak unconcernedly Why Hire one of course said Tom Then he thought of Freds poverty and added only eight dollars a month you know and only two months before the race cant feet sixteen dollars there is no use thinking of that said decidedly I Look hero now Bailey I know you earned more than sixteen vestment Fred flushed hesitated then looked Tom proudly in the eyes When my father wants me to finish at the academy instead of going to work ho said steadily I told him that I should feel mean all time Unless ho would promise to let me give what money I could earn to help out the expenses at home I have spent a cent of my earn ings since then and I never will until Im out of school Even if I won the it would cost sixteen dollars and that would lo so much out of family pocket And if I did not win Tom looked at his chum with new respect but he could not think of anything to say there an awkward silence until they reached tho squires Perhaps something will turn up ho said trying to speak cheerfully as Fred left him at the gate Fred worked away all thc rest of the afternoon at his carpenters bench While hands were busy making some bookshelves that the minister had ordered his brain was busy with the absorbing problem of how ho was going to win the bicycle When shelves were finished ho throw his tools down and came to an important decision He would put the out of his mind entirely But his father who had heard about the race called him into his room that night and had a talk with him about it Take that sixteen dollars out of your earnings Fred and hire a wheel ho said No father said Fred It wouldnt be right You and mother need the money I know that I couldnt do it Mr Bailey could not urge it after that The next day Tom Wheeler address ed Fred carelessly There will be lotw of time when I shant be using my wheel Bailey he said I wish you would use it when you can then youll in training you know in case anything turns up and you can get a wheel for the great day Fred accepted the offer almost as much to please Tom as himself for there was very little hope in his heart As time went on Fred was amused at the great friendliness which Jim Forbes showed toward him and at the many regrets he expressed be cause Fred could not enter the race Knowing Forbes I cant quite think them honest Fred said to Tom Wheeler one day I should suppose that he wouldnt want me in the race for fear I should beat him During the days and weeks which intervened before the race as soon as each afternoon session at the academy was over a score or more bicycles each mounted by a dark figure with back bent and muscles tense glided swiftly along toward the one hard smooth road that the village boasted Back and forth they rode passing and repassing one another swiftly and noiselessly Bent over their handle bars with their eyes on the ground before them they never stopped for friendly words or jovial greetings They seemed unconscious of every thing but their wheels the strip of road before them and their unswerv ing purpose to win the prize Fred joined this silent com pany only when Tom Wheeler was away with his father or had other things to do No amount of persua sion on Toms part could make Fred use the wheel during these recognized training hours in any other circum stances I am not training for the race ho would say to Toms remonstrances Im training for an emergency Early in tho morning when the birds were singing their choicest songs and when the sun was waking all na ture or at night when birds and flowers were all asleep Fred would ride out to the wellworn road Up and down up and down he would race beginning slowly but spinning along faster and faster until the rood was but a brown blur to Ins straining eyes The two months had gone by but the something that Tom had hoped for had not turned up The forlorn hope that Fred had cherished in spite of his inward resolutions had died away when the day of the race was fine June right Fred thought ate his breakfast in feverish feste in When the meal was over ho went out to his carpenters bench for a morn ings hard work Once his mother came into the shed and stood over him as he worked watching him as if to what was in his mind Youre going to the race arent you Fred she asked laying her hand quietly on his should er Well I should think bo I wouldnt miss it for anything he answered lightly and his mother went back to the house comforted At about eleven oclock a shadow fell across Freds doorway Looking up he saw Tom Wheelers little brother watching his busy hands with wideeyed interest Hello Harry he called out Have you come to watch me work was nothing the little fellow liked better Ive got some beauti ful shavings for you this morning No I was to give you this and then go straight home answered Harry He put a note into hand and disappeared into the warm sunshine with one longing backward look at the gracefully curved shavings which covered the floor Fred sat down on the edge of his bench and read the slip of paper hastily My Dear Feed Ive just had a telegram from father to next train to the city That means I shall have to back out of the race of Its pretty bard for me bat you take ray wheel and go In say you do it for nothing bat having you win will con sole me find the wheel In the usual place Good look to you Tom Fred sat perfectly for two or three minutes then he got up and took the note to his mother 0 Fred Im so glad she cried when she had read it You dont know how unhappy I have been about your giving it up Then you think I ought to take the wheel said Fred with a sigh of relief It seemed to me like taking advantage of Wheelers hard luck Mrs Bailey laughed Tom means what he says she answered Hes a true friend you ought to take him at his word and you owe to him to ride your best Fred gave her an enthusiastic hug and was out of the door and down the street before she had recovered her breath Two oclock was appointed as the hour of the race It was a straight away course By one there was a crowd encamped by the side of the road and filling all the most ad vantageous places Before the race began the trees along the way were full of small boys and their shouts and gyrations helped to while away the time before the riders appeared At a few minutes after two all was ready Sixteen waited each with one foot on the ground listening for the word to leap upon their wheels It came They were Fred rode prudently He did not begin with a but for an eighth of a mile was far in the rear of the best riders Little by little as in those solitary rides which he had taken so many times along this very road he increased his speed until by the time they had entered the second half mile there were but three in ad vance of him The distance which separated him from them grew less and less Now he was side by side with the two in the rear Slowly very slowly he gained on them passed them Cheers and the of Bailey I from the small boys in the trees announced this to the crowd far forward around the mile line the finishing point of the race They announced it also to Jim Forbes the solitary rider ahead of him Bailey 1 Bailey I That made Jim grip his handlebar harder Should the fellow who had always outstripped him at the academy in Latin in mathematics in history out strip him in this which was now almost won Fred had the inside track with just room enough to pass The illrwill that had been growing up in Jims heart fired him to a deed which he would have attempted if he had been in his sober senses So gradually that he lost no ground Jim edged closer and closer- to Fred making an angle with his own wheel and the side of the row pushing Fred nearer and nearer to the edge and the crowd So neatly was it done that neither nor the spectators realised Its object until its dollars since Use it for the of silent sympathy this You couldnt find a better in- 1 that pervaded the littlo diningroom was almost In a moment more to keep on would have been to run off into rank grass by roadside to slow up would have been to lose the race There would no alternative But when opponent risked that manoeuvre he knew skill with out being able to rate his strength and pluck As soon as Fred realized his posi tion all his manhood was aroused Ho gathered strength together made a desperate effort shot through the narrow space still left between the grassy rourlside and his adversarys- wheel passed so close that their grated and instead of opponent across the line he was followed by bun Renewed shouts of Bailey Bailey told Fred had won Very limp he was as off his wheel into somebodys arms hes really did not know whose they He thought he was still riding and the trees were flying by him so fasti it made his head swim He suddenly became conscious that Tom Wheelers cheery voice was saying Bravo man bravo I was in at the finish and Fin proud to own the wheel you rode on Id rather have it than the new one Did I beat him asked Fred eagerly Beat him 1 I should think you did more than one laughed Tom he helped Fred into the baggy he had driven over in As he jumped in after him a dusty figure limped through the crowd and Jim Forbes stood by the step- of the carriage Well what do you want de manded Tom angrily Jim kept his eye fixed on left hand which rested nervously the shaft as he stammered I I just wanted to tell Bailey that I dont think I knew what was doing and and well Im never going to do anything so again Jim looked Fred squarely in the face now and the last words were apoken with quiet determination Toms face softened and Fred smil ed weakly Its all right Forbes he answered and their hands met a minute before Tom whipped the horses and drove off accompanied by a rousing cheer And to think that Tom had the squire send that telegram on purpose said Mr Bailey that Fred lay stretched out on the sofa What do mean demanded Fred raising himself on one elbow to look into his fathers face Why Tom knew that you would never take his place in the race if you knew that giving it upon your account So he got his father to tele graph for him went down to the staid over one train and got time to see you win The squire told me about it tonight Fred got up in spite of his weak legs took his hat from its peg and went out He went straight to the squires and found Tom- in the back cleaning wheel It waa along talk that followed Fred insisted that he ought not to have the wheel under the conditions But you cant help it Its been awarded to you and I wont have it said Tom And really there was no way out of it Toms hearty good nature over came Freds supersensitive conscience in the matter and all he could dp at last was to aay Tom you fooled me but youre a brick I and go home Youths Companion you throw mud you must ox your hands to get dirty The George Free for assaulting a nineyearold girl at Bond Head has been sentenced to years in the Central Prison and to
