Full Text

St. Catharines Standard - Mrs. George Crain, well-known in school-teaching circles in Ontario and Quebec, died in Hamilton on Friday. She was a graduate of the St. Catharines Collegiate, later teaching in Beamsville for 12 1/2 years, beginning January 3, 1893.

Mrs. Crain was 84 years of age. Her father, the late James A. Ball, of Thorold, was the first public school inspector appointed to Welland County.

Descending from a family with a tradition of teaching, Mrs. Crain's career extended for 28 years in high school classrooms of two provinces.

After graduation from the Collegiate, Mrs. Crain obtained her specialist's standing in modern languages from the University of Toronto. She also qualified for a Province of Quebec specialists' certificate and taught there for some time. She spoke only in French during language lessons - sometimes to the discomfiture of the visiting inspector.

She was a much-travelled woman. Some years ago she travelled three times to Europe and visited many other areas of this continent.

A churchwoman, Mrs. Crain was a member of MacNab Street Presbyterian Church. When she was well, she attended morning and evening services regularly. She had been a member of every church organization except those for young people.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by one sister, Miss Florence Ball, St. Catharines; and one niece, Mrs. Ruth Tattersall, St. Thomas.
