L.-Sgt. H. Stanley Smart, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Frank Smart, Grassie, has been overseas since April of 1942. He has seen action at Caen, France and at present is serving in Holland. He was born in Grimsby and his father is the well known and popular C.N.R. operator now stationed at Stoney Creek. Writing to his wife Mrs. Helen Elmer, Robinson street south, Pte. C. H. "Bud" Elmer, serving some- where in the European theatre, gives particulars as to the death in action on Sept. 16th last of Pte. Ralph "Bud" Byford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Byford, Adelaide street. Pte. Elmer writes as follows: "I guess I can be safe in tell- ing you what actually happened to Ralph Byford. I knew Ben- dig very well too. Him and Ralph were always together. What happened was this. They were riding with twenty other boys on a T.C.V. (troop" carrying vehicle) and they were crossing the Leopold Canal and Jerry was shelling it, trying to knock opt the bridge. They just got nicely across when a high explosive shell lit beside the truck, kiling Ralph and Bendig and two oth- er boys. There were also six- teen others wounded on the same vehicle. They were killed in- I instantly, I think mostly from i concussion because they were not badly cut. They are buried near a place called Eclvo. I hope that I will relieve their minds as to 1 what actually happened."
