Ever since last Tuesday noon when George Kanmacher turned the key in the Bowlaway door and said come on in folks, the place has been beseiged with good, clean sport loving people, all wanting to take a crack at-the game" that Rip Vin Winkle made famous in the Catskill Mountains of New York State three centuries ago. This game is going to last in Grimsby because it is a real recrea- tional sport, pleasurable and every medico in the country will tell you, HEALTHY. l It is just one of that "kind of sports that get you and when it does you just became an addict. In other words you become a "Bowl Fiend" instead of a dope fiend. In fact I think the blooming game would cure a dope fiend of his habit. It was very lovely to stand in the spectators pews on Wednesday night and see the Queens doing their stuff. I just want to remark right here that they are Queens. Real products of the Fruit Belt and they have everything that goes to make a lady, even they have invaded man's realm of sport. PEACH QUEENS KNOCK 'EM Dizzy--. Th newly formed Peach Queen's Bowling League opened the first scheduled games last night at the Bowlaway. As a, matter of fact there are some young ladies there that will give the best of the crack men bowlers of the town and district a go for their money. Take Art. Forester, for instance. I got dough that says that Corrine Robertson, his daughter, will give him an awful tangle in a two-man series of games. There are plenty of others besides her. Guess I'll have to organize a. Father-Daughter series of games before the winter is over. (Hate to do it, because Doris "Red Smoke" McBride would make Old Smoke look like a never-wasser and what Bernice will do to the Little Shoemaker would be terrible. sPoRTlslMS-This bowling game must have an attraction, some place. I notice our new Hydro Commissioners sitting along the sidelines-the two Jims--might have been electric power they were talking about. I don't think so. . . . That gang from Smithville that came down four teams strong showed some of the local so-called champs what a little bowling looked like. . . . Old Steve McCoy, down in New Philadelphia, o, should have been here this past 10 days. He, along with Jimmy Wray, built the Temple Block. Steve was the man that put the original Kanmacher restaurant in business. In fact he was the first man that gave Grimsby a real restaurant. Steve, Old Rat- tler, you wouldn't know the old place now, but what is the diff. Mur- ray wouldn't have been able to deal any faster. . . . Red Farrell, the broad shouldered Peach belt kid that kept Hamilton Tigers in the Al- lan Cup limelight for several years has become the right hand man of Uncle Bill Hewitt in handling those tough Service team games in the Senior O.H.A. . . . Red is about as though on the hickory wielders as the late Lou Marsh. . . . When he twiddles his thumb the boys best do what he says or look out. . . . Even think he is tougher on the bad babies than his cousin Dad who preceded him as a chief arbiter for the O.H.A. and he was tough enough to suit the most of them. . . . ANOTHER TROPHY DONATED- Grimsby Bowlaway received its second trophy in a week on Sat- urday when Wm. A. Bewson of Hewson & Son came to the front with the donation. Is there an Angel somewhere in Grimsby and district who would like to help out the ladies of the Peach Queens' Bowling League. This league is now under way with 12 teams and the ladies are badly in need of a sponsor who will donate a trophy for their league or set up a trust fund to purchase a. trophy when the war is over. Don't all speak at once. Any person wishing to perform this act of kindness can make all arrangement by communicating with the editor of this paper. This trophy will be fer the Highest Individual Score, during a bowling season, by a man or lady of Grimsby and district. The winner will retain the trophy for one year when it will be turned back to the Bowlaway and the holder will receive a miniature of the large trophy. Big Rushton got his Fruit Belt league under way at Geo. Marr's pneumonia factory on Monday night, but I wasn't there. I was so busy all day Monday and half the night chasing municipal councillors, Lions and Legionnaires around that I never got within a mile of the Arena. Hence the short report of the opening games appearing on this page. But you have the line-ups and the goal scoring summary and that's something. As trophies are off the market for the duration, Mr. Hewson is creating a trust fund along the lines of the Gledhill & Inglehart league trophy set-up and when the war is over the trophy and miniatures will be purchased and presented. AN ANGEL WANTED--- GRIMSBY ARENA MONDAY NIGHT. JAN. 18th WED. & SAT. NIGHTS 8-10 First Game Eight O’clock ADMISSION - - - - SKATING By Bones Livingston, Sportologist Smithville vs. Grimsby Beamsville vs. Winona 10 CENTS The first out and out Juvenile hockey game of the season will be played TONIGHT at the Arena, when the local Juvenile team, coached by Father O'Donnell, will cross sticks with the crack Ram- blers, Juvenile A team of Hamil- ton. The Rev. Father has some smooth working lads under his command, but as they have not played together in a game yet, and have had very few practices as a unit too much cannot be expected of them, but at the same time they will give a good account of them- selves. The admission fee is only fifteen cents. Hockey in the Fruit Belt League got underway at the Arena on Monday night, with two games on the card. Grimsby defeated its old rival, Beamsville, while the lads from the southern metropolis of Smithville downed Winona. Two more games next Monday night.
