P By DR .ALVIN E. BELL _ (The International Uniform Lesâ€" n for Easter Sunday is Acts 2:22â€" _the Golden Text being Acts 2, "This Jesus did God raise up, ceof we all are witnesses." ) The Cross Cheated There was no question~ about Christ‘s death. The whole city had witnessed that. "Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God unto you by mighty works ... â€"even .as ye yourselves know; him, being delivâ€" ered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay: whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death; because it was not possible that he should be holden of it." The quesâ€" tion was how the apparent victim of the cross had become the victor over the cross and the grave and death of which these were but the symbols. As Peter sees it now, it could not be otherwise. It was the only logical outcome that could have been expected by anyone who knew who Jesus really was. A thousand years before the cross, David had foretold the Lord‘s saying, "Thou wilt not leave my soul unto Hades, neither wilt thou give thy Holy One to see corâ€" &mme proof of Christ‘s ection from the daead is his church confronting the world with its testimony, "This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses.‘" Something had hapâ€" pened that changed Christ‘s . disâ€" ciples from cringing cowards to courageous crusaders. ~"What made so great a change in these men in so short a space as three days? There is a resurrection within them that requires another resurrection to explain. Their faith and hope had expired at the cross with their master. But now, as Peter explains the change, they are "begotten again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." Acts 2.32.â€" Thursday, April 14th, 1938. On the day of Pentecost Peter boldly preached in Jerusalem concerning the death and resurrection of Jesus. "Ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay" a.man approved by God. The Victorious Servant Within Our Churches PREVIEW OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON "‘This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses." The V ictorious Servant The Golden Cext The "living hope‘" begotten in us by Christ‘s resurrection from the dead is that because he arose from the dead we too shall arise. His triumph over the grave â€" predicts ours and is a preview of our own. His resurrection justifies in us "this pleasing hope, this fond desire, this longing after immortality." As sea birds in the heart of a continent, feel the instinct of the ocean in their blood and yield to the urge to migrate to a place they have never visited, so man feels the pull of anâ€" other world upon his soul, and, as Milton said, ‘"is pluming his wings for a flight." Week night prayer meeting â€" Thursday, at 8 o‘clock. All are cordially invited. Preaching of the Gospel at 7 o‘clock. Sunday School and Bible Classâ€" 3 p.m. *% Faster was no incident, no accident nor after thought of God; it was the grand objective and consummaâ€" tion ‘of* all the preceding ‘ages, divinely planned "by the determinâ€" ate counsel and foreknowledge of God." . Christ had not been manâ€" handled by death; instead, as Lord of life, he had handled death and made it serve God‘s eternal purpose in the redemption of the world. Death was but the tool of his suâ€" preme service to God and the world. Through it he was "the resurrecâ€" tion and the life," his own resurâ€" rection being the indisputable proof. ruption.‘" And Peter sees in those words the empty tomb of Easter morning, and concludes that David, ‘"foreseeing this spake of the resurâ€" rection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades (the place of the dead), nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses." Servicesâ€" Sundayâ€""The Lord‘s Supper‘‘â€" (Acts 20:7) 11 a.m. Gospel Hall â€" (Adelaide St.) Peter told how David had foretold Jesus‘ resurrection saying, "Thou wilt not leave my soul in hades, neither will thou give thy holy one to see corruption.‘" ILLUSTRATED SUNDAY SCHOCOL LESSON It is often better to change someâ€" thing old than to make something new, a break with the past thus being avoided. The Festival of Easter, still named after an ancient pagan goddess, is a happy instance of the wisdom of the early Chrisâ€" tian Church, by virtue of which the new birth of Nature from its winter death, becomes also a symbol of spiritual resurrection. THE â€"GRIMSBY INDEPENDENT Dr. Moir, in dealing with "The Long Distance Effect of Alcohol," referred to a twoâ€"months‘ visit at Bellevue Hospital, New York City. a hospital devoted entirely to the cure of alcoholics and drug addicts. ©12,000 were treated in this one hospital this year; all trying to rid themselves of a disease caused by the same commodity that we are selling in Ontario beverage rooms," he said, and continuing, added, ‘"What hope of cure for these paâ€" tients? (ages from ten to 70; woâ€" men, one to five men). About 25% recover. In other words the chance for cure of alcoholism is less than oneâ€"half that of cure for cancer.‘" Little eleven year old Carol Mcâ€" Leod, a student at Thirty Mountain School, spoke very effectively on "The Case Against Booze," which was heartily appreciated by everyâ€" one present. Lengthy addresses by Mrs. R. J. Marshall, President of the Toronto Local Council of Women and Dr. Moir of Hensall, appearing in the March issue of the Temperance Advocate, were enthusiastically commended. Mrs. Marshall‘s subâ€" ject, Women‘s Relation to the Liqâ€" uor ‘Traffic,‘ very emphatically pointed out why this question was of deep concern in protecting the home and the children in the home.
