The magnitude of the number of the progeny by the middle of August simâ€" plyâ€"astonishes most people; there is, however, no reason for wondering how the flies become so numerous at this season of the year. Telling of the seriousness of all this, Prof. Lochead, Experimental Farm, Ottawa, says the house fly has all along been a dangerous pest, but of recent years only has the danger of this insect been brought home to the mind of the ordinary housekeeper. , It is responsible for carrying a greati many of the summer . troubles,â€"tyâ€" phoid, dysentery, diarrhoea, and other diseases. There are still many perâ€" sons who do not place any faith in the story of getms, but the family doctor will bear out the stt®ement that the house fly is ‘one of the greatest carâ€" riers. of germs which cause disease. It is true that more attention is given to the house fly the last few years than formerly, on account of its danâ€" gerous habits, but even yet too little care is given about a home for the proâ€" tection of the food products from visits of the fly. Heading It Off The best method of dealing with the house fly is to prevent its multiplicaâ€" tion. â€" It reproduces in manure piles, garbage, rotting straw and fermenting silage, and cleanliness is therefore a very important essential in the control of "the fly. ‘The chicf source of trouble is the horse manureâ€"pile as the flies breed mostly around the outer edges. A very simple and effective method of, destroying the maggots in the outer portion of the manure pile, is to sprinkle ‘borax about the edges of the pile and then give a sprinkling of water. : Another common pest very like the house fly, is the stable fly, s(m’etimes called the biting house fly. It at tracts the attention of most people beâ€" fore rain, as it.enters the house and there annoys the inmates. _ This inâ€" sect is different from the house fly inâ€" asmuch as it has piercing mouth parts. For some years it was suspected of being the source of inoculation forâ€" infantile paralysis and it may still be a factor in that connection. It has, however, been proven that it is reâ€" sponsible for carrying many germ disâ€" eases that are dependent upon inoculaâ€" tion for this transmission. _ f There are other common pests in the house, leaving aside such old time friends as the flea and bed bug, which are still to be found by summer boardâ€" ers: among them are the clothes‘ moths, Buffalo carpet beetle, the cockâ€" roach, and red ants. These are more common than most housekeepers are. inclined‘ to admit. ons Fighting Them _ _ _ may be control d °Y putting the garâ€" ments out in the SUN for several hours, (after dusting weU) and then sprayin~ 'with gasoline or benzine and putting the woollen garments when thoroughâ€" ly beaten in sealed bags or boxes for the summer. â€"Of course. in the case of ‘carpet beetles, the carpets should be taken out and beaten and sprayed \with gasoline, the floor â€" washed thoroughly with hot soap suds and !‘the cracks then filled with putty or plastér. It is hardly to be expected that one treatment will ‘be sufficient and the whole operation should be reâ€" ‘peated in about two weeks. The cockroach is &a most detestable insect often found in kitchens, especâ€" ially around hotels. They may be trapped by means of baits of chocoâ€" late and borax,; but probably the most effective method is to dust its runâ€" ways with sodium fluoride powder. In the case of the ants the nests should be located and then destroyed with boiling water or carbon disulâ€" phide. Sometimes they can be more readily exterminated by setting out sponges half filled with sugared water in the runways. The ants which fill these sponges may,‘me destroyed. and the traps set again> Statistics from Ottawa show that in 1923â€"553,977 pounds more Green Tea were brought into Canada than in 1921, and 906,728 pounrnds more than in 1922.
