4,800 cherries a minute. Somewhat faster than by hand. w From thew@pitter the cherries are carried several feet on the belt and fall off into the cans which are beâ€" reath the belt, twelve cans to a box. From the box they are lifted onto another moving table which carries them past the syrup tanks where each can receives so much syrup and passes on into what is known as a sterilizer. This sterilizer kills and destroys all germs that may be lurkâ€" ing in the fruit. The belt that. carâ€" ries the cans through this machine travels so slow that you can hardly see it move. In fact it takesâ€"a can twentyâ€"one minutes to pass through this steam bath. From the sterilizer they are carried to ‘the capping machine and hermetically sealed and from there pass on to the cookers and thence to the warehouse. EIGHT The whole factory is a model of cleanliness and every sanitary method known is in use here so that the fruit may be sent on to the consumer in as near a sanitary condition as~ it is possible to make jit. Residents of this district are invited by Mr. Todd to visit this factoyr at any time and he will be pleased to show them the whole method of fruit canning. | WANT i0 HEAR THE OLD MACHINE PITTS 4800 (Continued from page 1) (Continued from page 1) )1 W Lpe.' sSp at te «U 3 BREAD § == l Siegel, Clara Gordon,â€" Douglas Farâ€" It fell, Pearl Bernardo, Lawrence Gateâ€" he fi0ouse, Helen Clattenburg, Jean Mcâ€" etwi{fenzie, Wray: Tillotson. ¢ ind ; Passâ€"Lloyd Theal, Hilton Swayze, herdvelyn Hayter, Arthur House, Thelma rrepHarrison, Harl Swayze, Nora Patterâ€" eauton, Lena Robertson,‘ James Robertâ€" relason, Alred Clark. The physician, having elicited from the sick man the fact that he was in the habit of playing a wind instruâ€" ment, went on:â€" A Dublin physician, attended by a number. of medical students, was making the round <of his ward, and stopped beside a bed whereon lay a man with a very prominent chest. "Â¥es, yes; all that puffing and straining is most prejudicial to the lungs, most prejudicial: 3 4 Lubricants containing ordinary graâ€" phite, mica, ground cork and other finely divided solids are detrimental to bearing : parts. Interior greases, especially when exposed to heat, sometimes develop fatty acids, which ‘"etch" or rough on the surfaces of the balls, rollers and cones, and for this reason, only the most reliable and highâ€"grade greases should be used where antiâ€"friction bearings are conâ€" cerned. Even more important than the aboveâ€"mentioned considerations is the matter of bearing adjustment. Balls, rollers, cones and other parts of ball and roller bearings are wonâ€" derfully perfect in point of accuracy and fineness of finish and anything which mars the surfaces of the parts of such bearings, which roll one on another, is most destructive, increasâ€" ing friction very greatly and causing premature wear. Gritty material and lubricants of an acid nature are the two greatest eneémies of such bearâ€" ings. Extreme care should be taken to keep dust and dirt out of them by maintaining their enclosures in tight condition and using only the cleanest lubricants, for grit if present acts as an abrasive and wears the parts into a rough condition. It is not enough to keep adding fresh lubricant to old. On ‘the contrary all lubricant should be removed at intervals and the bearings thoroughly washed out with kerosene before new grease is added. On‘Thursday night the Tennis Club gave a concert in «the old theatre. Although they had only a couple: of days preparation the entire performâ€" ance was good from start to finish. Robt. Wagner received well earned applause after his performance upon a Chinese fiddle; later on in the proâ€" gramme he played the stellar role in The Sheik the grand finale of thé performance, a well: acted satire on the: well known movie of that name. The ukuléle quartette rendered a few novel parodies that added to the fun of the evening. f Next week the young people will give another bigger and even better concert. e With the idea of keeping the young people of the Beach together the exâ€" ecutive â€"committee of the Cottagers Association have engaged â€"C. â€" A. There must be trained men, and plenty of them. There must be the proper equipment, and plenty of staâ€" This can be done in one way onï¬yâ€"â€" by providing a thoroughly adequate forest rangers‘ service, both as to numbers, equipment and â€" efficiency. For the chief forest ranger of Quebec to talk about forbidding people to go intol the woods during periodsof the drought without a special permit is so much waste of words, for such a law could never beenforced, and its mere existence would provoke people to â€"break it. But if observation staâ€" tions ~were established throughout every forest district in the dominion, at points which ‘¢é¢ommand a view of a wide range of country, and if these were equipped with high power teleâ€" scopes and men trained in observaâ€" tion who would remain a constant watch in lines of military regularly and thoroughness, a.big step would have been taken toward mimimizing the damage done by forest fires. Despite reiterated warnings, the| toll taken by fire from.the Canadian | forests grows in vyolume with each' succeeding year. The man in theI street reads that forest fires are rag-! ing all over the province, remarks, that it is too ‘bad, and promptly forâ€", gets all about it. But to the man in the street tpe forest fire ought to bei a very serious matter, for in the| long run it is his pocket that it direct-I ly affects. Canada‘s timber is he»rj second grea'test’ asset; its actual and, potential value is colossal; yet every| year it is destroyed to the extent ot‘i hundreds of millions of dollars. Whoi starts the fires? The railways, say| some; picnic parties and careless! sportsmen, say others; spontaneous | combustion from concentration of| the sun‘s rays. during a prolonged;I drought, say others again. Doubtless / all three cases contribute more or less. It is also equally beyond doubt that none of these three causes :‘ can be wholly eliminated. There re-!j mains the work of taking such pre-;‘ cautionary measures as shall reduce; the risks to a minimum. | the royal coach just before lower one shows the royal rving Paddington station. If such a service were established Canada‘s loss from fires sweeping her precious forâ€" est lands would be vyery much less than it is today. The public can, of coure, do their â€"part by exercising care and common sense, but experâ€" ience has proved that to rely upon the public to any large extent in such matters is very much like leaning on water for support. A complete, effiâ€" cient and up to ‘ date forest ranger service is one of the greatest needs in this dominion today.
