Bs 4 ObAAA otttunnu The government, with all its machinery, is not able to build a macadam stone road that will stand up under heavy automobile\yand . iPractically every dollar of government money spent in the County of Lincoln, for macadam roads, on the main travelled thorâ€" oughfares, was wasted money, as the new macadam road is now in as bad condition as the old one was six months or a yvear ago, when the new work was commenced The fiftyâ€"nine miles of macadam road is money thrown away, except in rare cases in country districts where there is little or no automobfle or truck traffic. The report gives 185%%4 miles of graded road ; 349 miles of gravâ€" elled road; 593 miles of macadam road ; 50 miles of base coarse macadam, and ONE solitary mile of concrete pavement. we ue ow e w owk h ow k k o# o# iThe money spent on the gravelled roads may be well enough spent if the gravel was.not thrown on a foot deep, as is sometimes done, and threeâ€"quarters of it eventually wasted by being thrown into the ditches, instead of being retained on the roadbed. : __For this tremendous expenditure the province has only got seven and oneâ€"half miles of permanent road. It is only an experiment, as the bituminous pavement has never been tried out in Canada before. Where Did the Money Go? The Ontario Department of Public Works and Highways has issued its report showing an expenditure on good (?) roads in Onâ€" tario, during the year, of over six millions of dollars. The Minister of Public Works and Highways cannot prevent it because he does not know anything about road building, and his only aim in life seems to be to get his name into the newspapers in a long, bombastic harangue about what the government has done, or is going to do. Premier Drury stands for this because he does not betterâ€"the man was pitchforked into a position for wh not prepared, and it will be many dadys before he is big his clothes. Not only in the matter of ditches has the Public Highways Deâ€" partment been criminally negligent, but in the matter of construction of the road itself, they have shown an utter disregard for the lives and property of the people of ‘this province.
