Born on a farm in that township, he early took up the pro- fession of shoe making, and for man .7 years was proprietor ot a store at the Creek. He came to Beamsvillc some eighteen years ago and opened a shoe store, having purchased the business of the late James Fowler. During his tenure of residence here he, made a host ot friends and served in a number of public capacities. He was a member ot the Board of Educa- tion for several terms and also its chairman. He was also one of the first presidents of the Poultry asso- ciation, and continued to serve in various offices in the association, be- ing president at the time of his dem- ise. The Junior Farmers’ Club had a large attendance at its monthly meet- ing, held in the Social Club rooms, on Thursday night. H. M. McEllroy, the provincial agricultural representative was present from St. Catharines, and gave the boys a series of moving pic- tures on timely farming topics. It was Mr. McEllroy's farewell appear- ance before the club, as he announced to them that he was going to Edmon- ton after Christmas, to accept a posi- tion under the Dominion govern- ment's Department of Agriculture. The position is a step up for the pro- vincial representative, who has done yeoman work in Lincoln since assuming the position as successor of Mr. Elliott, about a year aid a half ago. The government's short courses in agriculture will begin on January 6, at the high school and continue for one month. He added that he was busily engaged at present in shaping a policy that will be benefi- cial to the entire Province and not to any particular section or class ot the people. This policy will prob- ably include good roads for the farmers to their nearest market towns, and better highways for the Province generally. "No one in On- tario is opposed to improved roads," said Mr. Biggs. The new Minister' thinks that good roads, improved rural schools and extension of the Hydro-Electric system will tend to check the exodus of young folk from the farm to the cities.
