That only the most substantial and durable improvement now known in road constructions will be adequate to sustain for a reasonable time without material deterioration the tremendous burden this thoroughfare will be reâ€" quired to carry. Your Petitioners further respectfully represent that they are not unmindâ€" ful of the conditions which at present prevail and that so long as the days of National stress and strain are upon us only those things which are the more urgent and necessary be undertaken the doing of which will in no way inâ€" terfere with our efforts in the great cause in which we are engaged. » Respectfully, Your Petitioners respectfully request your consideration of these matters and ask your coâ€"operation and assistance in determining the character of the improvements which should be undertaken and the approximate cost thereof to the various interests which may be required to contribute. That to attempt to substantially repair or improve this road by method heretofore employed, would be an unwise and practically usele penditure of our funds. That this road is now in many places in urgent need of repair and approaching a condition which may be termed unsatisfactory, unsaf, detrimental to the best interests of the people of this Province. That the traffic over this thoroughfare to and from points in the Domin ion and the United States has increased to an extent that could not well havi been foreseen by the Municipalities having under their care the maintenance of this road. That this roadâ€"the gateway leading to Ontario from the States, and contraâ€"and the connecting link between Niagar and the City of Hamilton (from which point the traffic radiat« routes to all points in the Dominion) will, in years to come, be support a burden of tremendous proportions. That in order to put this road in condition to properly support the increasing strain it will be required to bear, steps must be taken to make improvements which will be of a more substantial and'permanent characte1 than any heretofore attempted by these Municipalities. first and if they su before the Hamilto It is up to eve ahead of the other YOUR PETITIONERS of the County of Lincoln, respectfully p1 for your consideration the matters in this their Petition ‘set forth: That the HAMILTON & NIAGARA STONE ROAD has now becom of the great thoroughfares of Canada and has, in a sense, taken on the acter of an International Highway.
