TOBEY, 50 and 52 James St Hamilton, Ont. Someone Has Stolen 13 Acres of Land Last year this town had 497% acres. This year only 384 13â€"16 acres. The question is, where has the thirâ€" teen acres disappeared to? No new surveys have been opened. Clerk Fairbrother suggseted that the land had been washed down the creek or had â€" been scraped off the _ roads. These are the figures of Beamsville‘s area during the past two years â€" as shown ‘by Assessor Bartlet. The population has increased by 830 and the total figures are now 1100. There has been an increase in assessment this year of 35,000 mainly on busiâ€" ness assessment. The total assessâ€" ment is $637,830 and is made up of $180,030 on land, $410,070 on buildâ€" ings 3,700 Income as against 11,200 last year, 21,600 liable for school rates only and there is $23,300 worth of property exempt from taxation. One license has three months in which to sell out, another was granted three months extension conditionally. Those to whom licenses have been granted were ags follows:â€" We must congratulate the young lady on her ability as a writer and as a musician for her splendid work on this composition, and we expect to hear more of her as a song writer in the future. A . LAND THIEF INX BEAMSYVILLE The words of Miss Henry‘s song are very appropriate and the music is of that swinging, whistling, catchy kind, that makes you want to hum it â€" or whistle it all the time. The song has just been placed on the market and we are pleased to say that it is having a very good sale. This song was written shortly after the "Fighting B" boys of the second contingent had left for Toronto, and was, no doubt, inspirited by the fact that the writer, Miss Majorie Henry of Beamsville, already had â€"one brother at the front and another one with the ‘"Fightinng B" squad. During the past nine months the market has been flooded with war songs, both good and bad, but among the best that we have heard yet is that lyric with the catchy music enâ€" titled "Goodâ€"Bye Dear Old Canada." Warâ€"times always create a thirst for war songs and there are always a lot of song writers who are ready to supply the quencher for that thirst. GOODâ€"BYE, DEAR OLD CANADA My best regards to all the people and Chief.. ART. I will write _ regularly hereafter and as soon as I get my ordersy to leave England will cable you. Lord, I see they are going after Sam Hughes‘ shoes and I understand it as I ‘have two pair I got at . We get good grub in mess and lots of it so I am almost afraid to eat my full as I might get fat. I have my tent furnished quite comfortably and am â€" as snug and cosy as if I were q Field Marshall. J. J. Nairn, Esq., Gen. Manager, Dominion Canners, Ltd:, Hamilton, Ont. Dear Sir:â€"Our clerk, Mr. C. H. Bromley, has handed me your letter of the 5th inst., re road repairs to Maple Ave., and I regret very much the atâ€" titude you have taken in the matter. Every year since your tracks were laid on this street we have had the same promises from your local manag ers, and practically nothing has been done, until now the street is in a disâ€" graceful state and we cannot permit these conditions to exist any longerâ€" In our recent interview I tried to make it clear to you the condition of affairs and the offer we made of asâ€" sistance in the matter we considered most reasonable and fair, in view of the fact, that while we _ recognized that the old agreement I showed you had no legal value, yet it showed conâ€" clusively what was promised and on the strength of which the privilege was granted. Now we have been carâ€" rying out from year to year‘ a verbal agreement with regard to your assess ment, which has no more legal value than the street agreement, in the hope that you would, in due time, carry out the spirit of your obligaâ€" tions, until repeated disappointments have exhausted our patience. We find, after going into the exâ€" pense of furnishing stone to repair the road as your committee suggested when here that it would cost us about $1,000. We are satisfied that the diâ€" rectors would not consent, under the present financial conditions, to spend that amount of money this year; in fact, we are not prepared to say to what extent they would feel like going to assist in putting the road in shape. They, no ‘doubt, would be willing to do what is fair in the matter, but we are satisfied they would not care to go to any very great expense this year, and would suggest that the matâ€" ter be left over until next year, and we will take it up with our Board then, say about the ist of April and ask them to appoint a committee to meet any committee your municipaliâ€" ty may appoint and go to Grimsby and go over the line, and decide as to the amount they would allow to fix up the roadway. C. H. Bromley, Esq., Clerk, Municipality of Village of Grimsby, Grimsby, Ont: Dear Sir:â€"Replying to yours of the 4th inst., we wrote Mr. Todd a day or so ago to put the road along the switch in good repair. We print below copies of the letters sent to the canners by the: Council and the replies received by them. The Council took the matter up with the Dominion Canners early in the spring, but they have repeatedly stalled them off, till they have at last been forced to take other methods to have the track attended to. This year the rails are four and even five inches above the roadway and are impossible to cross over with out a lot of bumping and jarring and in lots of cases causing accidents and damaging vehicles. When the Dominion Canners Co. seâ€" cured permission from the ~Council several years ago to lay a switch down Maple Ave., from the H. G. & B. tracks to their factory, they agreed to keep the track and approaches to the track and over it, from the road in good repair. This has never been done, and despite the repeated reâ€" quests by the council for them to do so, they have, so far, neglected to atâ€" tend to the matter. "Bo" Brown, the owner of the only mansion on the Perney Survey, asked for a crossing on Murray St. north The sidewalk in Cypress Hollow is in bad shape and the Council will atâ€" tend to it immediately. It is likely a cement walk will replace the old wooden one. It was decided to oil Depot and Mountain Sts. The Reeve will make arrangements with the county for oil. The water commission _ will deal with the matter immediately. The Council discovered that through an error, there are two streets : in Grimsby called "Lincoln Ave:," the first one being on the Perney Survey and the other one on the Bonham Surâ€" vey. The Perney Survey being regisâ€" tered first, the Council will see that the name of the Bonham avenue is changed. Messrsg Chester . and ‘James livinz on the new Bonham Survey, are real boosters. They want the waterworks service, but do not wish to put the Council to too much expense and there fore, offered to do two days digging themselves free to get the water in. J. Orlon Livingston, press agent and Secretary Wismer of the 44th band, asked for the usual grant. They exâ€" plained that owing to the war the band would lose its Niagara camp money nd would need more funds from the Council. Reeve Randall, being a good grit, handed the band boys Sir Oliver Mow att‘s famous gag, "We will take it into our most serious consideration." Mr. S. B. Bonham has in past years, kindly loaned the town some of his farm implements‘ for street _ work. While on a job, his disc harrow â€" was broken. The town will pay for the repairs. ; S A.
